  • Peonies are super common garden plants. They have one of the most pleasant smells (to me, ymmv) and I'm currently enjoying a bouquet in my living room. The botanist Joseph Rock is responsible for bringing back the Rock Peony from China, which is a tree peony. My peony is herbaceous, as are most you'll get cut and sold at flower stores. There's a really interested story about him on Jstor: https://daily.jstor.org/meet-the-man-behind-the-peony/ Peonies are native to China and later introduced to the rest of the world. There are many varieties and around 30 species. According to the place I bought though from mine are "Sarah Bernhardt" peonies (Paeonia lactiflora). They get pretty big, around 20 cm (8 in). They start blooming in April and continue through May, and June. Mine were store bought. My mom had really beautiful blooms in her yard in May. Photo taken July 2019.
