we were walking through central park today and there was a community baseball game of sorts just finishing, all participants filing away and high-fiving each other. ash had dragged us over to the bleachers for the last 30 seconds of the game. when the field cleared he ran out to first base yelling “MY TURN” and this total stranger walked out with a bat and gave him a five-minute spontaneous batting lesson. neil and i watched from behind a fence as this stranger - who felt our presence but never spoke with us - taught our kid how to hold a bat and hit a ball. i’m not much of a baseball person, but this moment filled my whole heart. new yorkers are just so beautiful sometimes. and also: as churches burn and some people in the world are horrible to one another, we have to remember there are constant acts of spontaneous generosity and easy kindness flowing against the fear. all the time. add to the current. stay connected. i love you all. and whoever you were, stranger, thank you. we would have asked your name but we were running after a child who was making a beeline for the next adventure.
