  • The “Penguin Post Office” in Port Lockroy is a popular place to go. Visitors can send letters and postcards through the red letter box at Bransfield House, but it may take weeks for them to arrive at their destinations. Each year, seasonal staff send roughly 70,000 postcards to more than 100 countries!

  • Drake Shake or Drake Lake? 🌊 🤔
The Drake Passage is the confluence of three Oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans. Waves out there can range from gentle swells of 2-3 metres to a roiling sea of 12-13 meter high waves.

  • This ice cliff is about 30-40 meters tall and looks very unstable but we still drove a little 8 man boat below it to get back to the ship

  • Fresh veggies from Antarctica, from the closest place on Earth to space. Josefine Stakemann, geophysicist is one of the 9 crew members of Neumayer Station, Antarctica, who spends and works 14 months -without any break- at the station. During winter months, which just began, they are completely alone for nine months. About 400 meters next to the station, there is a green oase, EDEN ISS greenhouse, a science project of @germanaerospacecenter, developed for @iss and planetary exploration. Beside scientific research, the greenhouse provides fresh vegetables for the crew all year around. Here Josefine harvest cucumber, which is tasty as it can be, even getting no direct sunlight or growing without soil. @awiexpedition #antarctica #antarctic #science #scientific #womenoftoday #inspiringwomen #womeninscience

  • WELCOME TO PETERMANN ISLAND
.
March 21, 2017. It's our first landing on the Antarctic land. Petermann Island is pretty small, just 1.6 km long. It was named after the German geographer August Petermann by the expedition of 1873-1874.
.
We arrive amongst rocks with penguins all around us, they could not care less, waddling up next to us, craning their heads back to emit bizarre cry.
.
The 1st Antarctic Biennale starts with the project called Glaciator created by Joaquín Fargas, an artist and engineer from Argentina. His solar robots help to compact and crystallize the snow, which turns into ice and then adheres to the glacier mass. This helps to accelerate their formation.
