A 1983 adaptation of King's classic novel of a killer car. Directed by John Carpenter and starring Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky, Robert Blossoms, and Harry Dean Stanton.
So I actually already covered this film earlier on Nerd Talk. It was my first ever Retro Review. Instead of just recycle everything I said before about the film, I thought I'd go over the differences from novel to screen for this adaptation.
The Car: in the novel the car is not alive but rather possessed by Old Man Le Bey. The car itself was not haunted when he sold Arnie but until a few days later when Le Bey passed away. His ghost can sometimes be seen as riding in the passenger seat next to Arnie. While in the movie it's never explained why the car is evil. The car simply manipulates the driver and gets jealous everytime it's ignored.
Arnie: in the novel Arnie is conflicted between the car and spirit of Old Man Le Bey while also trying to hold on to his true personality. In the film he is constantly led down a darker path until he is unrecognizable. He liked the feeling the car gives him. In the novel Arnie is killed while away from home, leaving Christine behind while movie Arnie is killed after crashing Christine. His arch in the film is that he has become the villain while in the novel he's simply a victim.
Deaths: besides Arnie and Le Be the most different styled deaths between film and book is Darnell. Darnell in the book is simply crushed to death while inside the car while his book counterpart is attacked in his house by the car and is run over several times.
