  • Mike a member of our coalition explains how the towers are a result of the city’s neglect of community led plans like Chinatown Working Group (CWG) which invite over-development and facilitate displacement. That’s why Chinatown the Lower East Side members are telling City Hall: NO TOWERS, NO COMPROMISE! WE do not accept our displacement in exchange for few of the so-called "affordable" housing at the Two Bridges waterfront. Communities across the city know that ULURP has no power to stop luxurious developments. In order to stop the mega-towers at the Two Bridges waterfront, we need City Council Speaker Corey Johnson to take a clear stand. He should say no to the mega-towers and pass the full Chinatown Working Group rezoning plan. He should immediately stop Mayor Bill de Blasio's and Council Member Margaret Chin's racist treatment of our communities. We want the same protections that East Village has had!! Join our delivery of the 5,000 petition signatures on MLK day! Call on City Hall to stop the mega-towers and pass the CWG plan.

  • Samantha Isales discusses how these towers are destructive to our community. The proposed mega-towers at the Two Bridges waterfront are racist! In 2008, the racist East Village rezoning had excluded Chinatown and the Lower East Side from its height-limit protections. As a result, developers were pushed to Chinatown and the Lower East Side. How come richer people get to enjoy sunshine and air circulation when our communities are left in shadows and pollution? Now, at the Two Bridges waterfront, the proposed mega-towers will cause property values in the surrounding areas to go up. Likewise, our rents will go up! People can't even afford to buy food in their own neighborhood! The only affordable supermarket had been replaced by a 80-story mega-tower that is only affordable to the global super-rich! This is racist! On Jan 20, in the name of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his fight for equality, we say no to this racist displacement! We will deliver 5,000 petition signatures to @nycmayorsoffice Mayor Bill de Blasio, @speakercoreyjohnson City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Council Member @teammargaretchin Margaret Chin demanding them to stop the mega-towers and pass the full Chinatown Working Group Rezoning Plan.

  • Andrew Hiller, from the Coalition to Protect Chinatown and LES, offers us a cautionary tale of what’s to come if we don’t stop these monstrous developments and fight for the protection need via community led rezoning. Mayor Bill de Blasio's City Hall has displaced people of color neighborhoods across the city. Like Williamsburg/Greenpoint, the proposed mega-towers at the Two Bridges waterfront in the Lower East Side will displace workers, tenants and small businesses in the surrounding area. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Member Margaret Chin have refused to stop the racist displacement that was started by Mayor Bloomberg. In the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s fight against racism, on January 20 (MLK Day), 1pm at 250 Broadway, we call on City Council Speaker Corey Johnson to stop the mega-towers at the Two Bridges waterfront and pass the full Chinatown Working Group Plan. Our communities have suffered from racism long enough. The 2008 East Village left us unprotected from high-rises. It is time that our communities receive the same treatment! @nycmayorsoffice @speakercoreyjohnson @teammargaretchin pay close attention! We urge New Yorkers everywhere to join us in stopping racism! #passcwg #lowereastside #nyc #displacement #inwoodnyc #theboogiedown #thebronx #nycha #fightback #notowersnocompromise #stopclimatechange #stopracism #notowersnocompromise #chinatown #brooklyn #sunnysidequeens #stopracism #mlkday #rallies

  • Should we love those monstrous towers going up on the East River Waterfront? Yanin Pena reveals her reason for "loving" the towers. The proposed towers are acts of racist displacement, yet they're uniting us together to fight displacement, and to demand protection against over-development. It doesn’t matter if you’re Black, White Asian, Or Latino,a homecare worker, an office worker, or any worker we hate the towers, and we’re uniting to fight exploitation of our communities! More than 5,000 signatures have made this abundantly clear. In 8 DAYS we’re going to amplify these community voices in honor of Dr. MLK’s BDAY and his anti-racist legacy, BY DELIVERING THE PETITIONS TO CITY HALL, 1PM, ON JANUARY 20. OUR elected officials--Council member @teammargaretchin @nycmayorsoffice @nycmayor, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Council Speaker Corey Johnson @speakercoreyjohnson --SHOULD LISTEN TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS AND STAND WITH THE COMMUNITY AGAINST RACIST DISPLACEMENT! #lowereastside #nyc #displacement #inwoodnyc #theboogiedown #thebronx #nycha #fightback #notowersnocompromise #chinatown #brooklyn #sunnysidequeens #stopracism #mlkday #rallies
