  • Slade - Alive! (1972, Polydor, Germany)
#nowplaying #livealbum
.
First live album by the English glam rockers, who inspired so many glam and hard rock bands that would become much bigger stars than Slade ever were. Much underrated band in my opinion, as I believe they’re only really appreciated in their own country where they scored many hit singles. They had no less than 17 Top 20 hits in a row in the UK, including 6 no. 1 hits. Making them the most successful British band of the 70’s as far as sales of singles goes.
As a KISS fan, I found out about Slade during my early teens because Gene Simmons in particular would cite them as a big influence. Obviously I had to check out their music after Simmons had mentioned them so often, and I instantly liked their music. Many years later I would even get the chance to see Slade live in concert. Their hey days had long gone, but it was a lot of fun seeing them play a small club in Australia when I happened to be their on holidays in the mid 90’s.
Their live LP, produced by Chas Chandler, came out after they had only released two studio albums, and that might be the reason for the many covers on the live album. The LP opens with the Alvin Lee track Hear Me Calling (first recorded in 1969 by Ten Years After), while other covers include John Sebastian’s Darling Be Home Soon (this Lovin’ Spoonful hit was covered by many other artists), Bobby Marchan’s Get Down With It (Slade’s cover was inspired by Little Richard’s version and was Slade’s first UK hit single) and Steppenwolf’s Born To Be Wild (written by Mars Bonfire).

  • #TBT Slade…
As a young lad growing up in Manchester Slade spoke to me, so much so that I joined their fan club and was lucky to see them at their peak a couple of times, including a storming show in 1972 at the Free Trade Hall with Thin Lizzy. When Mike Peters booked them to headline his Snowdonia Rocks event I went along not really knowing what to expect especially as Noddy Holder no longer plays with them. But I have to say I had a fantastic time and Dave Hill put on a great show even without the platform boots and ‘Super Yob’ guitar. I spent the whole evening singing along… even to some of the more obscure, older songs and even got to catch up with them and do the Slay-ed thumbs with the real thing… and there wasn’t a cuppa soup in sight 🍵😉 #billyduffy #slade #davehill #superyob #donpowell #lookwotudun #zipworldrocks #snowdoniarocks #lovehopestrength #lhs #zipworld #snowdonia #northwales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Photo by Mick Peek

  • #OTD, November 26th in #Queen history
.
👑
1976 - A reception was held to promote #ADayAtTheRaces, at #AdvisionStudios, London
.
#DonPowell of #Slade & #ScottGorham of #ThinLizzy were present too
.
1977 - Queen went to see #FrankKellyFreas at #ChryslerMuseumOfArt where he had an exhibition displaying the original #NewsOfTheWorld cover painting titled "The Gulf Between" & who presented them with a limited edition copy of his sci-fi book. #MalVincent recalls that the illustration was about seeking understanding. He recalls seeing Queen coming out of their limousines coming to the museum where he & #WalterChrysler were standing there to greet them. Thehad flew to Norfolk one day off from their tour to see Freas, who was about 68 year old then & was a great fan of classical music, he didn`t know anything about Queen, but he was somewhat won over by #BohemianRhapsody .Queen came back several years later to #Norfolk to perform & set a limo to pick up the artist then in his 70s , to attend & bring along his grand daughters .Freas said it was the 1st time that his grand daughters actually felt that I had made it
.
1978 - Queen played at #RiverfrontColiseum, #Cincinnati, #Ohio, USA
.

1980 - Queen played at #Sporthalle, #Cologne, #Germany. (more on my last year`s post : instagram.com/p/Bb9iM_EFxvx/)
.
The intro to Keep Yourself Alive has now developed into a full-out band jam that usually lasts around a minute.Every night they'd bring something new to the table & Cologne gig is no exception
.
.
The story of Freas & Bohemian Rhapsody + him & his grand daughters saying that he`d made it after seeing Queen is utterly cute & makes me proud. Also let`s appreciate the lovely gesture of Queen to him & his grand daughters please. As per their Cologne gig, love how they always came so fresh & versatile. Bravo! ❤👏

  • When Ozzy Osbourne pulled out of the reading festival in 1980 he recommended Slade to the organisers , they were literally finished as a band, but they brought the house down and they were back for a few more years
Slade - we'll bring the house down - 1980 👍

  • Once again, an eye opener from Slade. An earthy blues/rock album of the 70s, strip away the glam and you’ve got a solid very underrated rock band. As always, Noddy’s vocals are pure class #slade #noddyholder #davehill #jimlea #donpowell

  • The last song of every #Slade concert they sing Merry Christmas Everybody which has been in the charts at Christmas since 1973. My final concert I was given the hat from a band member, it's signed by the band with the name & date of which concert it was. #merryxmaseverybody #DaveHill #donpowell 😍🤗
