#finnmark#8530bjerkvik#vidarvang
Wow. What an inspiring and moving few weeks! @lukejgrobertson and I are still processing it all and will be for some time. ⠀
We've felt so at ease and calm here. A huge part of that is from meeting the most welcoming and open people who've let us into their lives to understand a bit more about what it's like to live in this part of the world. There is such a deep connection to nature up here that no one rushes or hurries. Nature can't be hurried; things happen when they happen. Here's hoping I can take a bit of that ethos back to Edinburgh with me :)⠀
Where to even begin with what we've been up to?⠀
We had the absolute privilege of being a tiny part of the start of the spring reindeer migration of Lars Johan Anti's (@3larsaa) herd - pictured here! - and followed their route north (lots more on this later!). We saw the reindeer over three days and really got to know some of them. Lars Johan can identify every individual reindeer in the herd by their markings and antlers!⠀
We feel so lucky to have also been able to interview Jon Mikkel Eira (@jonmeira - reindeer herder, entrepreneur and chef), see Juhæn Guap's (@jdgaup) herd and interview Inga Utsi (@ingakaremarja - leader of the Karasjok/Kautokeino branch of Sámi youth organisation Noereh) - lots more on all of this later too - so much knowledge, wisdom and insight to share! ⠀
The temperatures over the last week or so have been unseasonably warm, not falling below zero overnight and raining! Smaller rivers have been opening up, which make crossing them dangerous, and there is now 15-20cm of water sitting on top of the frozen lakes. The snow on land is heavy, sugary and deep, making skiing with a pulk very slow and exhausting. Due to all these factors we cut the last ski leg a bit short and have planned a few more days of filming instead - more on this later too :) ⠀
Thanks / giitu / takk to everyone in Sápmi that has made 'Arctic Connections' what it is - we are so very lucky to have met you!⠀
Thanks also to @email@example.com@scottisharcticclub@tentmeals_expedition_food@thepolaracademy & The Arctic Club for supporting this expedition :)

Being a small part of the very start of the spring reindeer migration of the herd of @3larsaa was one of the most humbling, exciting and precious moments I’ve had.
Don’t let this picture trick you - these are wild creatures, only fed (and hence more tame) when in calve and grazing conditions are bad enough that feeding is required.
We’ve just returned to our base in Alta, after a 250km journey on skis and with tent, and with only a couple of days of filming left. We haven’t had nearly enough time to reflect on what an educational and magical journey we’ve had over the last few weeks.
As well as our own ski expedition and witnessing this reindeer migration we were fortunate that three inspiring and impressive individuals gave up their time to speak to us whilst in Karasjok - @jonmeira@ailike68 and @ingakaremarja - with all three offering fascinating and insightful glimpses into life in Arctic Sápmi.
We can’t wait to share their lessons, knowledge, concerns and cases for optimism for the Sámi people in the future.
It is said that reindeers avoid infrastructure. But we stumbled on a lot along the roads of Norway. The traditional reindeer husbandry, held by the Sámi, is threatened by the incoming oil, gas and -especially- mining industries. Some of these minerals are needed for the energy transition.
