Queen Emma of Hawaii (1836-1885) and Queen Victoria of England (1819-1901) began their friendship through letter writing not long after the death of prince Albert. Their tender exchanges after Emma asked Victoria to be her only son's godmother began some of the most touching of their correspondence. In 1862, Emma wrote to thank her for the baptismal gift, a silver christening cup, but also to inform her that the baby had died only days after his baptism in Hawaii. Victoria wrote back: "as a mother you will understand how fully I am able to appreciate the depth of your grief." Then, in reference to Albert's death, she added "as a wife I can sincerely hope that you may be spared the heavier blow which has plunged me into lifelong sorrow but which makes my heart tenderly alive to all the sorrows of others." Very sadly, exactly one year after Victoria wrote that letter, Emma wrote back: "God has visited me with that great trouble... you said you hoped I might be spared." Her husband had died suddenly, leaving Emma a childless widow. Their friendship continued for many years after this and Emma even visited Victoria in England. We can only imagine the bond these queens forged while grieving together for their lost loved ones.

This was a super awesome experience!!! We were sitting down at the hotel lobby in Boise, exhausted after having just performed 2 sold out shows. Just about to partake in our post concert dinner when we noticed a couple checking in with maile leis on. They had just arrived from their wedding reception. Without hesitation we followed Kumu Kawika’s lead, grabbed our instruments, Hālau o Keikialiʻi dancers quickly got into formation and we proceeded to perform a beautiful private tribute for the newlyweds! They were incredibly surprised, extremely appreciative and both in tears!! #thisiswhatitsallabout#spreadingaloha#alohaaroundtheworld#hula#aloha#hawaiianmusic#hulaaroundtheworld#hawaiian#halau
