This is a throwback post.
I posted this exactly one year ago today.
It’s just as moving each and every time I see it.

I am so glad you are all here!
I am so glad we are all here for one another.
I was thinking about this earlier today in fact.
Another huge irony of autism is that it often tends to distance us from our own extended families, for good reasons. “Strangers,” who become our understanding peers, tend to sometimes replace that void in which family support may be lacking; they become our main source for finding comfort and support.
It’s more than that though.
They become our “soul sisters” and brothers; our community of comfort to turn to on this lonely journey of caregiving and ASD child-raising.
The sense of community that many families may have been lacking and longing for, has returned, and has been gifted to us by autism.
Perhaps this was meant to be the change that this world needed all along!
Perhaps this sense of a “different” type of community, was meant to be like this all along.
Autism has its ironies. But, with things that are so forceful, so painful, and so life changing in good ways and bad, there is a gift to be found for all of us too, I think.
Our autism community, community of caregivers and advocates, are ALL gifts. We were never meant to do all this all alone, in my humble opinion.
