I can’t describe the feeling of how thankful I am for the continuous birthday wishes and opportunities that have been coming my way. As many sweet blessings that I’ve been receiving, I was also welcomed with a bitter moment. Yesterday, I lost my childhood companion of (10) years. After returning home from a long day, I found him laying still and lifeless. In January, he began experiencing tachycardia. After taking him to the vet, I was informed that he had a grade (2) heart murmur, prescribed a (14) day supply of prednisone and assured that there was nothing to worry about.
During a follow up in March, I was informed that there was no sign of heart murmur and that everything was, “normal”; I disagreed. Shortly after dropping him off for a dental cleaning last week, I received a call from the veterinarian who stated that due to his breathing and abdominal distension (which I noted at the previous check up) she decided not to move forward with the cleaning due to the unknown cause of his abnormalities. I understand the associated symptoms and side effects that can occur when giving geriatric patients prescription medications. However, I am completely against those that write prescriptions without fully obtaining the diagnosis. It’s disheartening to know that events like these and malpractices happen everyday.
If you’re a licensed professional or premedical student and your client’s/patient’s case extends beyond your expertise, it is ok to say, “I’m unsure”. There is nothing wrong with not having the answer and referring the individual elsewhere for a second opinion. We can’t blame physicians or professionals for natural occurrences in life, but we can hold them accountable when they fall short. Medicine is more than a six figure salary, status or white coat. There are peoples’ lives and your livelihood at stake. As bittersweet as it is, this has reminded me of the reality of the field that I’m indulging in, as well as reinforced the importance of not knowing what you have until it’s no longer here.

Although business has been great, I must say the trials you face as an entrepreneur make you think twice about why you’re doing what you’re doing. I’ve made an effort to be very still and observant when networking and meeting other entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, I’m not always welcomed with opened arms. Instead, I’m questioned about my ability, my location, my wit and the level of knowledge I’m equipped with at such a young age. Honestly, it’s extremely frustrating; to have a preconceived notion or idea conjured in ones mind due to your appearance, the manner in which you speak or where you come from. It’s actually very offensive that people will expect you to be involved in specific activities or dress a certain way all because of who you are; as if CEOs, entrepreneurs and millionaires can’t stem from all walks of life.
Although it may not be common, that doesn’t mean you must subject yourself to society’s standards. There will be people who once knew you personally and those that may have had a silver spoon throughout life that will do anything to see fit that you don’t succeed; that you don’t make it. Don’t allow that to deter you; use it for fuel and motivation. Nipsey’s death is saddening, I was at a loss for words when it occurred and when asked about my thoughts. The truth of the matter is, his music is not what gained my attention, but his train of thought did. His hustle, the manner in which he gave back to his community and desire to teach adolescents and young adults how to invest; teaching them that there’s more to life than money.
Utilize your gifts and talents to impact those around you and the ones in need. It’s bigger than you; it’s never really about you in the grand scheme of things. It’s heartbreaking to know that his death could serve as a possibility of a reflection of your father, brother, uncle, husband, boyfriend or son. It’s amazing how much of a target you become, the more good you do. Use your connections, networks and platforms to educate, inspire and shed light. Do it now while you still can✨.
