  • OTD – The Battle of Kapyong
From the 23rd to 25th of April 1951, 2,800 Allied men and tanks defended the Kapyong Valley against 10,600 Chinese from the PVA 118th Division, in what is one of the most famous Australian battles of the Korean War. The Australian element, made up of 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) was directed to hold a defensive position at the mouth of the valley and bore the brunt of an almost continuous Chinese assault for three days.
On the night of the 23rd, over 10,000 men of the PVA 118th Division engaged the 3RAR defensive positions on Hill 504. Throughout the night, the forward companies faced repeated assaults with A and B company facing encirclement by the PVA on a number of occasions. However, the tenacity of 3RAR persisted and the forward elements were able to maintain the defensive position until daybreak of the 24th.
During the battle, 32 Australians were killed, with 59 wounded and 3 captured. For their actions, 3RAR was awarded a US Presidential Citation and the battle honour ‘Kapyong’. Enjoy your day you Pack of Bastards 🇦🇺 #3RAR #koreanwar #kapyongday #history #war #pride #allies #infantry #artillery
