  • After the disappointment of Rally GB 1997 the next year would see the first of a hat-trick of wins, but the lead up to the 1998 event was anything but straightforward.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The previous round in Australia started really well for Richard and I; 7 fastest times and leading at the end of of day 1 making the most of a good road position. We’d continue to lead until the fourth stage the next day, Stirling East, where we cut a corner at a junction, hitting a tree stump and ending up on our roof. We managed to get going again but had lost a fair bit of time and were now well out of contention. Then the next day on the second last stage in Bunnings we misjudged a long left handed just after the stage split and rolled off the road, coming to rest with the roof against a pretty big tree. That was game over for us but our teammate Tommi Makinen had won the rally and moved into the championship lead.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We were then straight on a plane back to the UK to test for Rally GB. There was a lot of expectation on us after our performance the previous year, and having led in Australia. We tested in Wales, just outside Machynlleth and halfway through the day on a long uphill right hander we rolled the car onto its roof; three rolls in a week... The damage wasn’t too bad but we weren’t able to complete the test program that day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was then onto the rally itself and it was a pretty normal RAC Sunday for us finishing the day 6th and 18secs behind Colin who led. Radnor the next morning wasn’t as good for us / bad for the rest as previous years and we started a big day long battle with Colin. We got ahead at one point, then he led again before an engine problem halted him, leaving Alister McRae second at the end of the day 1min 15secs behind. Alister went off on the first stage the next morning taking any pressure off and we returned to Cheltenham to win by over 3 and a half minutes from Juha Kankkunen, taking the first of 3 Rally GB wins in a row.
