  • I went for the most incredible run on Sunday. .

The sun was setting, I was chatting with my best friend the whole way, he sky was orange and blue and purple, the temperature was brisk but not cold, and I could tell my body was just happy to be moving after a long travel itinerary. We started speeding up midway through the run, and while normally I hate running fast, for some reason my legs were screaming GO, and side by side we ran faster and faster down the hill that led home. I quite literally could not stop grinning.

I realized something in the hours it took me to come down from this running high:  I would never have had this experience when I was stuck in exercise addiction. Running was just never this JOYFUL when it was an obligation.

There is something so joyful about choosing exercise (or anything, really), about saying “I don’t have to be here but I want to.” It’s a feeling you don’t have when exercise is a constant requirement, a tireless to-do item. .

I still struggle at times with making sure exercise doesn’t dip back into the obsessive—I’ve said before that exercise addiction was by far the hardest disordered behavior for me to let go of. This is because excessive exercised is praised and reinforced everywhere you turn (“you’re so dedicated!” 🤦‍♀️) and also because I do like to exercise, and I do love to run. —> And figuring out where the line is is a lot harder than just swearing off a behavior altogether! .

But the freedom to listen to my body, to challenge myself when I want it, to be surprised by what my body wants to do—these are things that only choice around exercise can give me. And honestly? That’s pretty incredible. .

  • Show up. Get it done. 20 min run to warm up doing intervals; Full body strength training session and BBG wk 5 legs and cardio. This year it has been hard to stay consistent with my workouts but little by little I am gaining strength back. Hope you are having a great Tuesday.
