  • I've been asked occasionally, what advice would I offer to a college graduate or mature student who is considering the study of rocks. There are many answers, but they have places to be and people to see so I try to keep it short;
Anybody can be a Geologist. Science has no barriers or beautiful walls, only connections and community. Science, like art, is a universal language. It does no care about your race, religion, gender or borders. It accepts you and makes no judgment offering only truth, hope and futures. It may take longer because of your circumstances, but it is your enthusiasm and your own inherent compulsion that will make you the better scientist, not the amount of money you have. The best scientists are never afraid to get it wrong if they are shown what is right. Always ask questions however obvious that answer may seem to everybody else, they too might be nodding wisely only because they are afraid to be embarrassed. Embarrassment is short lived, enlightenment is forever. Always accept help offered from your colleagues, professional or amateur. Everybody has something of value to offer, don't allow your pride or superiority to deny you that value. However experienced, however erudite, never allow the delight in your science to become jaded. Always accept a field trip, even with the humblest of hostelries or simplest of food at the end of the day, the memories made will warm your later years. Always stop at a beach, cliff, river or landscape - even if it is just to stop and stare for five minutes, the traffic will not miss you and there are revelations in the mud at your feet, the rock in your hand, and in the vistas before you. Use the internet, be greedy with it. The wealth of information it stores and that is made available to you was unimaginable just a generation ago. Friendships made in science, in its study, last a lifetime. It is just one of the rewards. Anybody can be a geologist, the most fortunate are those who made that choice. Enjoy the rocks.

  • These are from Siberia. There were a lot of nld/sativa leaf/plant structures and in late August, early September they were finishing up. I figure they have to be auto flower, the summer there is short from late May to end of September. The plants despite the high wind, colds, rain and growing in a feral field were looking exceptionally healthy and some were huge over 14ft. They all showed resistance/resilience to all the weather, bugs and pest of any kind. There was a lot of color variations, and there are bees 🐝 on this property and surrounding area - lots of medicinal flowers and herbs 🌿 as well. These are from feral fields and open pollination. I think the bees are partially responsible for the loud terpene profiles. I have to say the resin content on these plants was pretty frosty. You would get a good size resin ball very soon after beginning to work on getting the seeds and going through rubbing the 🌱 stalks for smell🥭🍍🍒🍓🍊🍋🥝🍏🍇 I am encouraged to give these a try because I am interested in breeding for terpenes, resilience and potential for rare cannabinoids. It looked like a lot of pure unique rare heirloom plants the purple pheno being one of the best examples. There was a citrus sap plant, it was a one of a kind out of the 300 or so plants gone through. The dominant terpene profiles was piney, sweet floral and cherry 🍒/raisin terpenes. I could see how you could easily make dry sift or charas out of them. It definitely didnt smell like ditch weed or ruderalis. These could have potentially escaped from farms or cultivated regions or origins. There is also the possibility of being brought over by migrants from Central Asia. I’m guessing it’s a combination of feral and cultivated genetics because there must be hemp plants/ruderalis/wild weed all interdependently cross breeding in this and neighboring regions. Plus there have been numeral cases of outdoor clandestine operations reportedly prosecuted. Because of this prohibition there is no information on what genetics are being grown. #ancientplants #plantknowledge #landrace #preservation #diversity #conservation #science #planthealing #holistichealing #heirloom #cannabis #research #genome #canna

  • Happy Lab Week! Throwback to one of my favorite places in the world, Micropia! A fun museum in Amsterdam inspired by microorganisms. There were microorganism stamps for each exhibit collected on a “Petri dish” card and placed on a microscope that magnified/projected the collected stamps on a HUGE screen! life-size tardigrade anyone? Also beautiful glass sculptures and more! 🥰 Please visit the museum the next time you are in Amsterdam 🎊🎉 #micropia #microbiology #science #fun #microorganisms #amsterdam

The hybrid animal is a combination of the critically endangered mammals on the Red List from IUCN. The skull fragments are the bones of the hybrid animal on the hand. The bones under the human hand and the face of the creature represents that endangered animals face extinction. The artefact tells the story of how endangered animal's life depends on how we as humans behave.

  • Hemoglobina Glicosilada (HbA1c) ⠀

  • This microbe might be the Dark Knight of the #gutmicrobiome ! He might protect you from Salmonella, but in the meantime does he drive the progression of colitis? In fact, the activity of a single microbe really depends on the structure of the ecosystem in which it exists. Pathogenicity isn't dictated by the mere presence of a microbe, but its relative abundance and the immune systems of both the cohabiting microbes and the host.
This is a prime example of the complexity and nuance of the gut microbiome. Anyone who claims to have it figured out well enough to diagnose #dysbiosis, heal leaky gut, or kill off "bad" bugs and only feed the "good" bugs, or cleanse/ detox/ rebuild the microbial colony there is selling some expensive nonsense. Don't buy the problem they've created so they can sell you the solution. Can we manage symptoms of digestive discomfort? Sure! Can we make significant changes to the ecosystem as a whole without the use of drugs? Not sure!

A significant change in a couple of taxa may lead to downstream effects that we haven't measured. Or it might not! So lets stop selling gut healing protocols and supplements and just be more honest about what we really can do.

  • N'birdie: It's well documented that birds can fly but many of us can dive and swim as well!. Today I'm very excited as my friends and I are working with the Nekton Research Team to help document many of the unknown species buried deep beneath the Indian Ocean. As an #environmentalistwithwings our habitats are important. Our oceans are environmentally diverse and of global importance, playing a crucial role in climate stability, food security, carbon cycling and the air we breathe. I hope to discover many new species from new corals, algae, sponges and possibly larger animals like dogsharks!.....Aah.🐥😀The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean fed by numerous major rivers. 'First descent' is a series of expeditions to explore and conserve the world's most unknown and least protected ocean-the Indian Ocean!. First descent deploys a raft of new cutting edge research, sampling survey and video technologies from their state of the art submersibles and remote operated vehicles. Our ocean is undergoing rapid ecological transformation by human activity therefore we must do what we can to protect it. Since Nekton's first mission in 2016 they have contributed positive impact through major scientific discovery, multidisciplinary collaborative research missions, capacity development initiatives, activating ocean data, global public engagement, education and catalysing ocean policy. Their aim is to help change our knowledge and understanding of the world's oceans, speed up protection and governance of our last great wilderness-the ocean. Today I'm diving deep into the big blue!. 😀/#nekton/#environment/#biodiversity/#ourocean/#humankind/#nbirdie/#education/#expeditionunknown/#nektonmission/#habitat/#oceanprotection/#science/#climate/#researchteam/#blueplanet/#vital/#ecosystem/#biodiversity/#species/#indianocean/#technology/#3dmaps/#firstdescent

  • Sometimes you may feel completely stuck in certain areas of your life. Yes, overall, your life may be really great, but there is this one area – be it finances, health, relationships… – where things are just not going the way they should. Only one stupid thing may be enough to “mess up” your life and will lead you to depression, anxiety, anger and to other kinds of mental illnesses.
.
What is RECVR and how does it help treat anxiety, and how does it work?⠀
.⠀
First, some science: CBD is a chemical compound (known as a phytocannabinoid) that’s found in hemp and cannabis. It interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which has the potential to benefit the mind and body in a whole slew of ways —including in treating anxiety ⠀
.⠀
THIS IS NOT THE SAME as the high associated with weed—that comes courtesy of a different, psychoactive compound called THC. So sorry if that is a disappointment as it's just not our thing.⠀
.⠀
The research on CBD is promising. There have been many many studies on this to date and many more laned as we uncover more. Looking at these one recent large analysis of 49 existing studies on CBD found strong evidence for the use of CBD as a legit treatment for anxiety, panic disorder, OCD, and even helping treat post-traumatic stress disorder⠀
.⠀
Researchers think CBD may have an impact on our serotonin receptors, which explains the antianxiety, antidepressant effect that so many CBD users report. “CBD also interacts with a neurotransmitter in our brain called GABA—gamma-aminobutyric acid—which modulates our stress response,” says Emma Chasen who is a leading CBD educator and medicinal plant expert⠀
.⠀
In other words, RECVR may help your body combat stress on a physical and mental and emotional level⠀
.⠀
Use RECVR - Use Your Advantage⠀

  • How do we cool down to temperatures as low as 2K? 🤔⁣
⁣
It's all with the help of our pumps! These guys pump through the helium (our cryogen of choice) and pressurise the system to get it nice and cool🌡️⁣
⁣
At the moment I'm using a little rotory pump with the turbo drive TD20 pump 🌀⁣
