"If I Could Be Like That" | Have you ever thought about how your life might have turned up if you weren't born in the family you were born in, or if you were born in another country, or simply if you didn't have the opportunity to get an education? I initially took this photo of a homeless man begging in the streets because I thought it told a story. But while I was preparing the photo, these thoughts swivelled around in my mind and it made me uncomfortable. I realised the possibility that this man could have easily been me or any one of us in another life, purely due to lack of opportunity or unforeseen circumstance. It probably wasn't his fault that he's living rough and I'm sure the reasons why he deferred to begging are valid. But the fact that there are still homeless and poor in a First World country like the UK makes me think how fortunate I am to have what I have. By any stretch, I'm definitely not rich nor do I belong to a well-off family. However, I do have the basics and a job, a means to provide for myself, to which some may say isn't very appealing. But to some like this man here, to him, he could probably be thinking, "If I could be like that…all my problems would go away!" So let's be happy and treasure and appreciate what we have and learn to be content, because there are people in this world that wishes that they were like me and you: living life normally.
