  • Honoring the Women of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Adrienne Bailon
Bailon was born to a Puerto Rican mother, Nilda Alicea and an Ecuadorian father, Freddie Bailon, on October 24, 1983. She grew up in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Bailon has an older sister, Claudette. Bailon's parents are divorced, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Joe Felix. She attended PS 110-The Monitor in Brooklyn and the High School for Health Professions and Human Services, but did not pursue a career in the medical field because of her musical endeavors. Bailon commented "I really wanted to be an Obstetrician! I wanted to bring babies into the world..." Bailon was discovered by Latin pop singer Ricky Martin in October 1999 while she was performing in a church choir at Madison Square Garden. Martin asked for the four best singers in the group, and Bailon was one of the four elected by Martin to perform as back-up singers as part of his Livin' la Vida Loca Tour concert show later that night.
Following the performance, Bailon became a member of the girl group 3LW. Bailon stated that she was spotted by a producer while on a field trip to Beth Israel, and was later offered a slot in the female trio. Bailon said "... coming from very humble beginnings in the projects of the Lower East Side and not having any "Hollywood" connections.... It did not seem realistic. I sang in church, acted in all the church and school plays.... So when the opportunity came to join a girl group I was ready!"
The group was signed to Epic Records. Kiely Williams and Naturi Naughton were the other two members of the group, and work on their debut album began in 1999. In 1999, the original line-up of 3LW formed. Their first single, "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)", was released in the fall of 2000.

  • Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés is Mestiza Latina [Native American/ Mexica Spanish], presently in her seventies. She grew up in the now vanished oral tradition of her immigrant, refugee families who could not read nor write, or did so haltingly, and for whom English was their third language overlying their ancient natal languages. “We do not become healers. We came as healers. We are. Some of us are still catching up to what we are. We do not become storytellers. We came as carriers of the stories we and our ancestors actually lived. We are. Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not become artists. We came as artists. We are. Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not become writers, dancers, musicians, helpers, peacemakers. We came as such. We are. Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not learn to love in this sense. We came as Love. We are Love. Some of us are still catching up to who we truly are.” ~ Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes “Simple Prayer for Remembering The Motherlode”

Las Nietas de Nonó (Lydela Nonó and Michel Nonó), Lydela Nonó, Born 1979 in San Juan, PR, Lives in Carolina, PR; Michel Nonó, Born 1982 in San Juan, PR, Lives in Carolina, PR,
Las Nietas de Nonó is comprised of sisters Lydela and Michel, who live in Barrio San Antón, a half-rural, half-industrial working-class neighborhood of Carolina, Puerto Rico. They work at the intersection of theater, performance, dance, visual art, activism, ecology, and emancipatory education. Las Nietas de Nonó make autobiographical work that is framed within the socio-economic and geographical context of the exclusion and eviction of black communities in Puerto Rico, which entails racial and class discrimination, mass incarceration, drug trafficking, obstetric violence, and the cycle of poverty.
Part of their work is highlighting practices found in their neighborhood such as the expansion of ancestral knowledge, the exchange of produce grown in the neighborhood, and the re-use of found materials for artistic projects. Thus, Las Nietas de Nonó created Patio Taller a community space, theater, and garden, established in their paternal grandparents’ former house, for public gatherings, performance, international artist residencies, workshops, sustainable agriculture, and cooking.
Las Nietas de Nonó received the 2017 Art of Change Fellowship from Ford Foundation and the Global Arts Fund from the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice. Their work has been presented in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, the United States, and England.

Just two years in the making back in 1987 Johnny O had recorded what would be the biggest solo hit by any male artist to date. Being called the King of Freestyle of Mic Mac Records. So now when we sit and analyze the exact meaning of the format of Freestyle, who could there be, but Johnny O who with all his hits which crossed the nations and oceans, Johnny O is known more than any other artist in his own format of Freestyle.
