  • "Eat Like Andy". What a find! There weren't many big surprises among the Super Bowl's hitherto un-sneaked ads, but Burger King's spot was one of them. Oddly, it's credited to both the fast feeder's main creative agencies David Miami and MullenLowe, despite the fact that neither shop did much more than find this great piece of archive footage, which comes from a 1982 documentary by director Jorgen Leth entitled '66 Scenes in America'. No other creative work was required , making it one of the least complicated ads in the Big Game. However, typically in these lawyer-dominated times, it took a whole year to negotiate usage rights with the Jorgen Leth estate and the Andy Warhol Foundation. It was probably worth it; this is a little gem of cinema verite art in its own right.

  • After last year's disappointingly weak Christmas ad, John Lewis comes thundering back to full form - and so does agency Adam&Eve DDB after a few less impressive offerings - with a spectacular musical version of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The reason is the launch of the John Lewis Partnership's revamped brand identity, in which department store John Lewis and supermarket Waitrose have adopted a shared "& Partners" tag to reflect the fact the business is actually owned by its staff - known internally as "partners". Yes, well that's the reason but the ad far transcends such matters, as an ordinary school concert is transformed with some wholly brilliant staging. It's the best Christmas ad John Lewis never made; and no doubt will inspire numerous head teachers to try something similarly ambitious for this year's end of year concert... We're pretty certain, though, she doesn't hang around on her own in dive bars drinking Bud; not even the beer's new premium Copper Reserve special edition. Oh well. Still what is an actor good for if they can't pretend now and then? Digital agency VaynerMedia has been bumped up to lead creative for this compelling if rather corny spot that's heading for a slot in the Oscars telecast next weekend. Now what guy wouldn't want their ass whupped by Charlize, even with her good arm tied to a glass of beer?

  • "Prom Dress / DMV". Here's a great, unexpectedly edgy, very funny campaign from indie shop Erich & Kallman for General Mills' Reese's Puffs cereal. Though the majority of its marketing has always been squeaky clean family friendly, Big G has never been afraid of shaking things up from time to time. Remember how they upset the applecart a few years ago with some of the first packaged goods ads in America (for Cheerios) to feature same sex and interracial couples? And there's often been a darker sense of humour lurking behind the bright smiles. Now, these ads aren't going to start any revolutions, but top marks for acknowledging not only the angst-filled frustrations hiding behind teenage rites of passage, but also the fact that a fast sugar fix tops even a desire for independence or an end to the patriarchy. -

  • "Privacy Matters". Apple has long made its ironclad security features a key selling point of the iPhone. That's led to some controversial situations in the past, not least when the company declined to help the FBI break into the iPhone of a terrorist killed on US soil in the course of a murderous attack. It's easy to be serious about issues like this, and certainly privacy matters, but we at Adbrands are inclined to feel that, sometimes, in areas like the war against terrorism, too much privacy can be bad for democracy. Anyway, this new campaign from Apple and TBWA Media Arts Lab deflates any soul-searching on such weighty issues with a series of funny vignettes which illustrate the human urge to maintain certain boundaries when it comes to personal privacy. The ad doesn't answer any of those bigger questions, but it certainly does amuse and entertain.

Young love, old love, memories of love have all become the springboard for brilliantly evocative messages about the benefits of eating well (provided you buy your ingredients from Intermarché of course!) In the latest, a widower tackles an old recipe left behind by his departed wife. It may just be spaghetti al pomodoro but it summons up a succession of memories of a life well lived and loved.   • "Radiant Venom". Puma has teamed up with German footwear retailer Overkill for a limited edition resurrection of its classic Venom sneaker in a new colour scheme. The agency is Berlin-based creative boutique XY. Berliners (or regular visitors to that city) will recognise that this is set not on the surface of some distant planet but in a post-apocalyptic version of Berlin itself. Those are the ruins of the city's famous TV tower landmark. In fact the agency has constructed a whole back story, in which the explorer is merely a digital avatar for that recumbent girl, the last survivor of a nuclear disaster, collecting fragments of the past to keep herself alive. Phew! All that in 60 seconds, plus Joy Division on the soundtrack!

  • "Justify Nothing". In a big headline pitch last year, Publicis won the global creative account for Mercedes-Benz with the creation of a new dedicated entity Publicis Emil. That seemed to bode ill for incumbent agencies like German independent Antoni. Well, Emil can forget about ever getting its hands on lead creative if Antoni keep putting out ads like this superb film, filmed in region-non-specific Portugal, and made in English (like the Bertha Benz spot we featured last week) but in a such a way it can be language-adapted for almost any country. It's a brilliant piece of work, emotionally rich, quirky when it needs to be and featuring a fine central performance by Irish actor David Wilmot. It even contains a set of other life lesson vignettes that can be carved out as shorter ads in their own right, like the pregnant couple and the dad in a princess dress. A lovely little film.
