Though the majority of its marketing has always been squeaky clean family friendly, Big G has never been afraid of shaking things up from time to time. Remember how they upset the applecart a few years ago with some of the first packaged goods ads in America (for Cheerios) to feature same sex and interracial couples? And there's often been a darker sense of humour lurking behind the bright smiles. Now, these ads aren't going to start any revolutions, but top marks for acknowledging not only the angst-filled frustrations hiding behind teenage rites of passage, but also the fact that a fast sugar fix tops even a desire for independence or an end to the patriarchy. -

  • "Eat Like Andy". What a find! There weren't many big surprises among the Super Bowl's hitherto un-sneaked ads, but Burger King's spot was one of them. Oddly, it's credited to both the fast feeder's main creative agencies David Miami and MullenLowe, despite the fact that neither shop did much more than find this great piece of archive footage, which comes from a 1982 documentary by director Jorgen Leth entitled '66 Scenes in America'. No other creative work was required , making it one of the least complicated ads in the Big Game. However, typically in these lawyer-dominated times, it took a whole year to negotiate usage rights with the Jorgen Leth estate and the Andy Warhol Foundation. It was probably worth it; this is a little gem of cinema verite art in its own right.

Oddly, it's credited to both the fast feeder's main creative agencies David Miami and MullenLowe, despite the fact that neither shop did much more than find this great piece of archive footage, which comes from a 1982 documentary by director Jorgen Leth entitled '66 Scenes in America'.   • "The Seven Worlds". Ridley Scott has been out of advertising for 15 years. Now he's back he just can't stop. An intervention may be required. A week after his Turkish Airlines extravaganza, here's an even more lavish spectacular for Hennessy cognac, developed in partnership with DDB Paris. With the very greatest of respect, Sir Ridley, please don't give up your day job in movies. Scott is one of the greatest feature film directors of the past 40 years, but once you move on from commercials it's very hard to go backwards again into shortform. As a result, this film resembles one of those bloated epics they used to make back in the 80s, like Hugh Hudson's infamous 'Swimming Pool' for B&H; then the most expensive ad ever made. It's all glitter - and such amazing glitter too - but with no substance, no personality, no humanity. And this is only the 60-second cut; wait until you see the full four-minute version. When it comes to ads, unless you're making a joke of epic, small is better.

Lucky Generals is back at the helm, working with the retailer's inhouse agency, and the idea builds on the same self-deprecating premise as last year's ad. Technology is great, but what happens when it goes wrong? Last time round, Alexa lost her voice; here are a few other times Alexa didn't work the way she's supposed to. Harrison Ford is the biggest name involved. (When was the last time he appeared in an ad? Has he ever?). Also featured are actor Forest Whitaker, comedians Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson and identical twin astronauts Mark & Scott Kelly.   • After last year's disappointingly weak Christmas ad, John Lewis comes thundering back to full form - and so does agency Adam&Eve DDB after a few less impressive offerings - with a spectacular musical version of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The reason is the launch of the John Lewis Partnership's revamped brand identity, in which department store John Lewis and supermarket Waitrose have adopted a shared "& Partners" tag to reflect the fact the business is actually owned by its staff - known internally as "partners". Yes, well that's the reason but the ad far transcends such matters, as an ordinary school concert is transformed with some wholly brilliant staging. It's the best Christmas ad John Lewis never made; and no doubt will inspire numerous head teachers to try something similarly ambitious for this year's end of year concert... We're pretty certain, though, she doesn't hang around on her own in dive bars drinking Bud; not even the beer's new premium Copper Reserve special edition. Oh well. Still what is an actor good for if they can't pretend now and then? Digital agency VaynerMedia has been bumped up to lead creative for this compelling if rather corny spot that's heading for a slot in the Oscars telecast next weekend. Now what guy wouldn't want their ass whupped by Charlize, even with her good arm tied to a glass of beer?

Time was, the Beeb used to contract out its more important marketing jobs to agencies like RKCR\Y&R. No need now: the corporation's BBC Creative unit has demonstrated it has all the bright ideas and technical skill of any third-party supplier. We've already featured here its great father-and-daughter Christmas 2017 campaign, and the tapestry spot for the World Cup. Here's a superb all-star campaign to launch the BBC Sounds audio app, in which a host of celebrities - some already familiar BBC faces; others just pleased to get involved - add their own little dash of magic. Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora, Jared Leto and Idris Elba are among the less expected star turns. The results are truly impressive.   • We often bellyache about the beautiful mindlessness of designer fashion and fragrance ads; in most cases they're the epitome of what you might call Zoolander syndrome. However, Prada's promotional films are usually a cut above the rest; not just really really ridiculously good-looking but also with a bit more thought behind them. Here's the latest, a 'Black Mirror'-esque illustration of the processes by which Prada's signature nylon fabric might be created in the very near future. DLV BBDO developed the concept. Here's the first of what will be four 'episodes' being released weekly online. Let's hope the remaining three films live up to the first. We can only show 60 seconds here.   • "Ultra Good Inside". So a dumbbell and a skateboard meet at a party... It's clearly a sign of the times that the latest mainstream launch from Australian beer Hahn - one of the lead brands in the portfolio of local brewery giant Lion - is a mainstream low-carb beer made partly from rice so it's also gluten-free. The brief to agency Thinkerbell was to avoid the four Bs of traditional beer advertising: blokes, banter, bars and barbecues. It was all looking pleasantly surreal until the last five seconds, when at least two of those rules get broken. That's definitely two blokes at the end and it may be a kitchen but it certainly looks like a bar. Also, how are they going to keep all those guests happy with only 10 bottles of beer? And only one bowl of crisps?!?

The Toyota Yaris has been made in Valenciennes since 2001, and just over a decade later became the first vehicle ever - ahead of Renault or Peugeot - to be granted the 'Origine France Garantie' stamp from the government, guaranteeing its French origins. You know what the French are like: that stamp of approval is of huge emotional importance to them. So in the same spirit, this ad too is 100% French: the locations, the set, all the props, the actors and all the production crew. Just not ownership of either the car or the agency... Formidable!

It's the true story of Bertha Benz, wife of Carl Benz, who was himself the inventor of the first ever automobile.

Unfortunately, Carl was a bit of a shrinking violet in some respects, so it was wife Bertha who did more than anyone else to demonstrate the possibilities of the machine, not least by undertaking the first ever long-distance car journey from her own home in Mannheim to her parents' house in Pforzheim, 65 miles away.

She broke down halfway, and was obliged to use a hatpin and her garter to fix the problem.

  • "Get Money Calm". Here, finally, is the long-awaited debut campaign from Engine (formerly WCRS) for price comparison service MoneySupermarket, bringing to an end Mother's years-long incumbency. It's certainly a lot less memorable than virtually any of Mother's ads (even with the parachuting cat), but maybe that's part of the underlying strategy. Until now, MoneySupermarket's ads have been eye-grabbers pretty much just for the sake of being eye-grabbers, without saying anything at all about the product or what it does. There's clearly been a big shift away from that in the market, as Confused.com has already attempted to achieve. Engine's ad follows suit, though the inimitable Matt Berry's voiceover adds just a touch of crazy to the overall mix. Perhaps this will - at long last - encourage a similar shift on the part of CompareTheMarket and GoCompare as well. Can finally bid farewell to those annoying meerkats and cringe-inducing "Gio Compario"?

  • "The Journey That Changed Everything". Bizarrely, Daimler commissioned German creative boutique Antoni to remake an ad R/GA already produced for the Mercedes-Benz brand last August. It's the true story of Bertha Benz, wife of Carl Benz, who was himself the inventor of the first ever automobile. Unfortunately, Carl was a bit of a shrinking violet in some respects, so it was wife Bertha who did more than anyone else to demonstrate the possibilities of the machine, not least by undertaking the first ever long-distance car journey from her own home in Mannheim to her parents' house in Pforzheim, 65 miles away. She broke down halfway, and was obliged to use a hatpin and her garter to fix the problem. You'd already know all that if you saw R/GA's version last August. However, in honour of International Women's Day, Antoni were granted a very much bigger budget to tell exactly the same story, with the benefit of cinematic photography, lavish production values and plenty of local colour. As a result, it's a considerably more satisfying piece of work. We bet R\GA were a bit peeved when they found out someone else got more money to make exactly the same film. It follows up a campaign we featured here last year which aimed to show how the bank can help when you're struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one. That was more of a period piece. The new spot - aimed at families coping with divorce - is even more acutely observed and beautifully judged, making this couple's child its centre of gravity and presenting both sides of the break-up with equal compassion. There's no specific program in place for life's various emergencies, but Westpac is making a formal promise that it will understand its customers' concerns and will provide assistance.   • "Prom Dress / DMV". Here's a great, unexpectedly edgy, very funny campaign from indie shop Erich & Kallman for General Mills' Reese's Puffs cereal. Though the majority of its marketing has always been squeaky clean family friendly, Big G has never been afraid of shaking things up from time to time. Remember how they upset the applecart a few years ago with some of the first packaged goods ads in America (for Cheerios) to feature same sex and interracial couples? And there's often been a darker sense of humour lurking behind the bright smiles. Now, these ads aren't going to start any revolutions, but top marks for acknowledging not only the angst-filled frustrations hiding behind teenage rites of passage, but also the fact that a fast sugar fix tops even a desire for independence or an end to the patriarchy. -

  • "The Hybrid You Can Feel". The first big campaign from Honda's new pan-European agency is a big disappointment compared to the fine work we've come to expect from the local offices of Wieden & Kennedy and McGarryBowen. Hakuhodo Collective is a dedicated unit drawing upon that Japanese group's handful of European subsidiaries, most notably the Paris outpost of Sid Lee. You might have expected better from that usually interesting agency. These are supposedly genuine testimonials from a collection of "real" Honda drivers across Europe. They're all suspiciously photogenic though, with distinctively actorly voices, and I've never heard such manufactured-sounding endorsements. "Onroad, offroad... it's still a road, right?" "It's like I can drive further than the horizon." Seriously, who talks like that apart from a copywriter? We already know Europe is, financially at least, one of Honda's least important regions. This Euro-pudding really emphasises that fact.

  • "F1 2019 Season Launch". Interesting to read Lewis Hamilton's comments over the weekend about the collapsing TV audience for Formula 1 racing. Almost 9m UK viewers watched Hamilton claim his first F1 championship in 2008. Fewer than 2m watched his latest victory in Mexico last season. "I didn't know those numbers," he told an interviewer. "That sounds terrible from a business point of view. That's definitely not cool. I remember growing up and turning on BBC and watching the Grand Prix, it was awesome." The reason, of course, is Sky, which has acquired exclusive live rights for all apart from the British Grand Prix, and tucked them behind a £10-per-month pay-wall. That's even bigger money for the F1 teams and organisation, of course, but Lewis Hamilton already has more cash than he knows what to do with. He's voiced a valid concern about the long-term effects of restricting the audience. This isn't football after all, with a much bigger, broader following. Still, here's the handsome ad produced by Sky's inhouse creative team to launch the 2019 season, a track through the ages of Formula 1. Nice to hear the old 'Grand Prix' TV theme again - Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' of course - still in business after all these years.

A week after his Turkish Airlines extravaganza, here's an even more lavish spectacular for Hennessy cognac, developed in partnership with DDB Paris. With the very greatest of respect, Sir Ridley, please don't give up your day job in movies. Scott is one of the greatest feature film directors of the past 40 years, but once you move on from commercials it's very hard to go backwards again into shortform. As a result, this film resembles one of those bloated epics they used to make back in the 80s, like Hugh Hudson's infamous 'Swimming Pool' for B&H; then the most expensive ad ever made. It's all glitter - and such amazing glitter too - but with no substance, no personality, no humanity. And this is only the 60-second cut; wait until you see the full four-minute version. When it comes to ads, unless you're making a joke of epic, small is better.

It follows in the same theme as the long-running Hall of Claims campaign, in which JK Simmons (of 'Whiplash' and 'Counterpart' fame) plays the custodian of a museum of strange-but-true accidents, all based on real claims handled by Farmers. Indeed, the campaign's slogan "We know a thing or too because we've seen a thing or two" has always sounded very Seussian, so how appropriate to team up with Theodor Geissel's immortal creations to celebrate what would have been his 115th birthday on Sunday. That's Simmons on voiceover of course; shame he had to rush through it to get in under the 60-second mark.

It took not one but two agencies to deliver the new domestic branding campaign for German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom - ultimate owners, as our US readers probably already realise, of the T-Mobile brand. House agencies DDB and Serviceplan worked together on the campaign to ensure that it's really not one you could possibly overlook. 'Dabei' literally means "there", but in the sense of "Be There" - or as this campaign entreats - "Let's All Be There Together". In a world where most telecoms companies tend to go for greater subtlety, this In Your Face approach certainly makes you sit up and pay attention.   • "The New Normal". Ten US states have now completely decriminalised marijuana for adults over 21 (matching the restrictions on alcohol) while another 22 have legalised it for medicinal purposes. Pretty soon, weed will be just as normal as booze. MedMen is one of the leading developers of medicinal cannabis, and they secured the support of star director Spike Jonze to helm this superb film promoting the normalisation of pot, which is getting limited airplay on some cable channels and in cinemas. "The truth is, in middle-income white America, cannabis is already pretty normal," argues actor and activist Jesse Williams, who provides the voiceover. "White people know their kids smoke weed... They're selling it, and buying it, but it's not that big of a deal... But when black and brown folks do it, we're thrown in cages for the rest of our lives..." Even now, there are still people who are locked up for a plant that is now legal in almost half of the United States. That surely doesn't make sense. They purposely used Orange, Ice cream and Coca-Cola trucks for easy recognition and to depict that the flavours are original and classic. 
So Orange flavour drinks and Vanilla flavour ice cream have been chasing and competing with classic Coke for consumers attention, until they were forced to stop. No more chasing; now they have all come together in one bottle for the consumer's enjoyment.

Nice ad but it doesn't make me excited to taste the Orange, Vanilla Coke thing though.

However that calculation excludes all the bizarre combinations under which Diet Coke is currently being marketed, and from which classic Coke has been excluded until now. Well, we guess everyone will have to at least just try it to decide whether the experiment is justified. We hate to sound negative but both the flavour and also this spot from Wieden & Kennedy smack just a little of desperation. There was a time when W&K made superb spots for Big Red Soda but those times seem to have passed. -

Anomaly's new ad for Ally Bank - what used to be GM Financial - is cute, but would have had considerably more impact had it not followed so closely in the footsteps of AT&T's 'Just OK is Not OK' campaign which debuted last month. They're basically the same idea. Both campaigns even have near-identical sushi, tattoo, babysitter and mechanic gags. That's probably just an unfortunate accident of timing; but all things considered it might have been better if Ally had postponed this campaign and tried something else instead. Surely this wasn't the only idea Anomaly presented. Still, putting all that to one side, it's a funny idea, with some clever vignettes.

  • "Flight". Apple has booked a slot in tonight's Brit Awards (think of it as the UK's Grammys) for this stunning film from renowned director Jonathan Glazer. As usual, it was developed inhouse by Apple with support from TBWA\Media Arts Lab. Its star is the extraordinary Finnish "airdancer" Inka Tiitto, a world champion indoor skydiver. If you don't already know what indoor skydiving entails, it uses something like the wind tunnels they use for testing automobiles but turned upright. Anyone can do it, but few people manage the grace and poetry demonstrated here. It would be interesting to know how much - some? all? none? - of this film was shot up in the sky for real as opposed to in an indoor tunnel and then digitally enhanced. I mean, if Tom Cruise could do it for Mission Impossible 6...

Rather than sell you furnishings for you to install yourself, the store sends in its own craftsmen to do the job for you. The comic vignettes are well-conceived building nicely from moderately challenging to seriously dangerous. -

Always nice to see pan-European manufacturers take the time and trouble to make dedicated ads for the UK market, rather than just repurpose a regional Euro-pudding, with all the driving sequences flipped to get the steering wheel on the correct side of the car for British roads. Will that still be the case post-Brexit? Dedicated Opel/Vauxhall agency McCann Velocity just dropped this rather good spot for the Crosland X SUV, built around one of those everyday truths with which all parents are familiar. To Vauxhall's credit, this has long been one of its strengths, even at previous agencies. Its UK-made ads have always focused very strongly on the family angle. Still doesn't explain just how you're expected to get all that mud off the upholstery though.

  • "Less Rah. Get Real." Always nice to see pan-European manufacturers take the time and trouble to make dedicated ads for the UK market, rather than just repurpose a regional Euro-pudding, with all the driving sequences flipped to get the steering wheel on the correct side of the car for British roads. Will that still be the case post-Brexit? Dedicated Opel/Vauxhall agency McCann Velocity just dropped this rather good spot for the Crosland X SUV, built around one of those everyday truths with which all parents are familiar. To Vauxhall's credit, this has long been one of its strengths, even at previous agencies. Its UK-made ads have always focused very strongly on the family angle. Still doesn't explain just how you're expected to get all that mud off the upholstery though.

  • "The Seven Worlds". Ridley Scott has been out of advertising for 15 years. Now he's back he just can't stop. An intervention may be required. A week after his Turkish Airlines extravaganza, here's an even more lavish spectacular for Hennessy cognac, developed in partnership with DDB Paris. With the very greatest of respect, Sir Ridley, please don't give up your day job in movies. Scott is one of the greatest feature film directors of the past 40 years, but once you move on from commercials it's very hard to go backwards again into shortform. As a result, this film resembles one of those bloated epics they used to make back in the 80s, like Hugh Hudson's infamous 'Swimming Pool' for B&H; then the most expensive ad ever made. It's all glitter - and such amazing glitter too - but with no substance, no personality, no humanity. And this is only the 60-second cut; wait until you see the full four-minute version. When it comes to ads, unless you're making a joke of epic, small is better.

  • "Fuel Your Destiny". Our favourite ad by far from last night's Grammys was this offbeat spot from BBDO New York for Dunkin' - just Dunkin' now; they still sell Donuts but not above the door! It's quite a change from previous ads from the coffeeshop chain, and all the better for that. Great concept, great script and a really impressive collection of unusual-looking character actors. Don't be offended but even in these PC times, the technical term for them is still "uglies", but we think they're all wonderful. A special shout-out for the crazed captain and that "prototypes" guy.

She will soon be as ubiquitous in commercials as she already is on the Grand Slam circuit. The latest addition to her already bulging endorsement portfolio is Ford's luxury marque Lincoln. This rather handsome spot broke last night during the Grammys; thus its strong musical theme. Longtime WPP agency Hudson Rouge retained the account in the global Ford creative review, so it's clearly putting every effort into making the client happy to guard against any further changes of heart... Though we're guessing Serena costs a little more than the car's traditional spokesman Matthew McConaughey. -

By sheer coincidence this week, the new film from J Walter Thompson Italia for Campari, starring 'Blade Runner 2049's adorable virtual girlfriend Ana de Armas, follows hot on the heels of the Turkish Airlines film starring her '2049' nemesis Sylvia Hoeks (which I posted here earlier). There are other similarities between the two ads: here again, a fine actress and a great director (in this case, Matteo Garrone of 'Gomorrah' and 'Dogman') are poorly served by a ridiculous script and tone-deaf product placement. Just a good Negroni cocktail is all it takes to make your dreams come true? Come on! It looks fabulous, though, and de Armas is completely captivating.   • "The Journey". It's been hard to ignore the advance hype over Ridley Scott's return to the advertising business. Commercials is of course where this most revered of directors first made his name, but he hasn't made one himself for more than 15 years. Yet Anomaly were able to persuade him to get back in the driving seat for an extended film for Turkish Airlines. With the greatest respect, he needn't have bothered. Despite lavish production values, and a strong performance from 'Blade Runner 2049' assassin Sylvia Hoeks, the result is a handsome bore. Hoeks is some kind of spy in pursuit of a mysterious stranger, who leads her through every single one of Istanbul's top tourist attractions over the course of six minutes for no apparent reason. It all looks gorgeous but the script piles up cliché upon cliché - at one point she even jumps into a taxi and tells the driver to "Follow that car!" - and the succession of blatant plugs for Kempinski's Ciragan Palace hotel (oops, there's another one) are simply ridiculous. A straight travelogue would have been fine; a pure spy movie would also have been fine. But never the twain should meet. Here's the edited version. The most notable perhaps is Paralympic fencer Bebe Vio. She's become quite a star in her chosen sport as well as the wider media, having already appeared in ads for Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and others. As a child she was robbed of both hands and feet by a severe bout of meningitis but has fought back against her disability with extraordinary bravery. Also featured are soccer players Sara Gama and Benedetta Glionna, basketball player Ilaria Panzera, ballerina Valentina Vernia and Paralympic athlete Veronica Plebani.   • "Eat Like Andy". What a find! There weren't many big surprises among the Super Bowl's hitherto un-sneaked ads, but Burger King's spot was one of them. Oddly, it's credited to both the fast feeder's main creative agencies David Miami and MullenLowe, despite the fact that neither shop did much more than find this great piece of archive footage, which comes from a 1982 documentary by director Jorgen Leth entitled '66 Scenes in America'. No other creative work was required , making it one of the least complicated ads in the Big Game. However, typically in these lawyer-dominated times, it took a whole year to negotiate usage rights with the Jorgen Leth estate and the Andy Warhol Foundation. It was probably worth it; this is a little gem of cinema verite art in its own right.

  • I love this ad! See how Hyundai sold the amazing experience one gets when shopping with their Shopper Assurance scheme.

The spot titled "The Elevator" featured comic actor Jason Bateman as the lift operator. A couple joined some other people in an elevator obviously going to different floors. They informed the operator they were going car shopping  and he replied "ah you are going down, way down". That was the first hint that "going down" wasn't a good thing on this elevator. Lol

As each person got to their destination, we catch a glimpse of the kind of experiences or treatments they would get on each floor and they were not good. From a root canal surgery to a vegan dinner party. Lol. (I like how they appeased Vegans by making sure a lady screamed happily while a man made a disgusted face at the mention of vegan food). .

Meanwhile, car shopping was at the bottom floor which indirectly tells you that all of the hellish experiences they glimpsed on their way down were nothing compared to the hell they would face doing their car shopping.

When they eventually got to the floor with the car showroom and caught a glimpse of what car shopping was going to be like (boring and long with unbearable sales assistants as it usually is in real life 😩), they immediately corrected their mistake - they weren't just going for car shopping, they were going to shop for cars with Hyundai's Shopper Assurance scheme! And when they got to that floor, you could tell from the ambience that the experience was going to be heavenly!

  • "Made By Britain". It pains me to say it, but I'm not remotely convinced by British Airways' new ad, which is the airline's first TV campaign for six years. WPP's dedicated Team Horizon agency (mainly Ogilvy) developed the spot. As a longtime flier of the flag, I'd have to say that my recent experiences with British Airways have, sadly, fallen some way short of their past highs. They probably put on a good show for this cargo of celebrities, but most flights have none of the old polish and sparkle. Sadly, BA and parent IAG have chosen - for long haul anyway - to match the somewhat lower standards offered by most US airlines rather than chase the high ground now inhabited by Qatar and Emirates. A busload of B-list talent - Olivia Colman, Gary Oldman, Anthony Joshua, Grayson Perry, Paloma Faith etc - won't really change anyone's opinions.   • "Dream It With Idris Elba". The ads keep coming thick and fast. Web design platform Squarespace has unveiled another great campaign in which a famous face pokes fun at his public image. Last year, it was Keanu Reeves and his motorbikes; the year before, John Malkovich and his menswear business. Now, tough guy Idris Elba indulges in a few fantasies about what he might have been. Apparently, though, unlike previous Squarespace campaigns, this isn't actually booked for Super Bowl. Star director Spike Jonze helms not just this ad but a really funny accompanying film, supposedly a behind the scenes documentary. Find it at Squarespace's YouTube page to see Elba get totally roasted by comedienne Lolly Adefope. As the man says, he's not known for comedy. Judging by these films, a whole new career awaits him.

Lucky Generals is back at the helm, working with the retailer's inhouse agency, and the idea builds on the same self-deprecating premise as last year's ad. Technology is great, but what happens when it goes wrong? Last time round, Alexa lost her voice; here are a few other times Alexa didn't work the way she's supposed to. Harrison Ford is the biggest name involved. (When was the last time he appeared in an ad? Has he ever?). Also featured are actor Forest Whitaker, comedians Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson and identical twin astronauts Mark & Scott Kelly.   • "The Big Mac Debate". The partnership between McDonald's and Leo Burnett London gets my vote as the local industry's single most productive advertising relationship. There are are some other contenders (VW/A&E DDB and perhaps Ikea/Mother), but none quite so consistently strong as this. When it comes to the full 60-seconders (as opposed to slightly more disposable 30s), you can almost always count on a miniature masterpiece. Here's the latest little gem, a brilliantly observed collection of friendly arguments about what makes a Big Mac: with or without bacon. "The structural integrity of the burger has been compromised..." Classic!

Where better to turn than to Warner Bros and LEGO for another three-way tie-in? The last time this happened was a couple of years ago for the launch of a Chevy LEGO Batmobile. The imminent arrival of 'The LEGO Movie 2' provides another great opportunity to promote not just a movie but also Chevrolet's new Silverado, which appears to be gobbling up all GM's marketing budget these days. And guess what, they don't just make them from LEGO bricks. You can also buy real ones that are made from metal and fuelled with gasoline! The partners have gone even further this time with a big online push that includes a website supposedly designed personally by eager-to-please hero Emmett (voiced of course by Chris Pratt).

The odd thing about advertising for Pepsi is that, even now, more than a century after its creation, it is still to a large extent defined by its rivalry with a certain other popular beverage. It's like some kind of Groundhog Day version of Avis's famous "We Try Harder" but one that lasts for over 120 years. Coke never has to mention Pepsi in its advertising, but the bigger brand is always lurking somewhere in the background of most Pepsi marketing. Goodby Silverstein's Super Bowl spot for the blue beverage makes fine use of Steve Carell's Ultimate Mr Nice Guy persona, and also throws in cameos from Cardi B and Lil' Jon to make sure that every market demographic is catered for. And you know what? The results are more than OK; they're really rather good in fact.

After a prolonged dry spell (mostly unfunny "comedy" ads with big name stars), the UK's flag-carrier telecoms business BT and its agency AMV BBDO have rediscovered their mojo in the last year or so with a series of moodier and more illustrative films, usually underpinned by a strong creative idea. It's a perfect example of the old chestnut "show, don't tell". You don't need a celeb to tell us how good BT is (supposedly). Give us a visual depiction of it. This one conjures up an excellent illustration of a household cluttered with every family member's internet content as a way of demonstrating the benefits of investing in whole house wi-fi. -

  • "A Coke Is A Coke". Seems like not even the geniuses at Wieden & Kennedy can resurrect Coca-Cola's advertising. That agency has long been associated with the brand, and in the past was responsible for some superb spots. This, set to run just before Super Bowl LIII, is not one of them. The drinks company's soul-crushing emphasis on peace and inclusion messaging has sucked all the innovation out of its advertising over the course of the past five years. Supposedly the new campaign derives its inspiration from Andy Warhol, who once said "A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it." Unfortunately, Coca-Cola has chosen to make all its advertising as simplistic as that aphorism.
