  • "Eat Like Andy". What a find! There weren't many big surprises among the Super Bowl's hitherto un-sneaked ads, but Burger King's spot was one of them. Oddly, it's credited to both the fast feeder's main creative agencies David Miami and MullenLowe, despite the fact that neither shop did much more than find this great piece of archive footage, which comes from a 1982 documentary by director Jorgen Leth entitled '66 Scenes in America'. No other creative work was required , making it one of the least complicated ads in the Big Game. However, typically in these lawyer-dominated times, it took a whole year to negotiate usage rights with the Jorgen Leth estate and the Andy Warhol Foundation. It was probably worth it; this is a little gem of cinema verite art in its own right.

  • "Dream It With Idris Elba". The ads keep coming thick and fast. Web design platform Squarespace has unveiled another great campaign in which a famous face pokes fun at his public image. Last year, it was Keanu Reeves and his motorbikes; the year before, John Malkovich and his menswear business. Now, tough guy Idris Elba indulges in a few fantasies about what he might have been. Apparently, though, unlike previous Squarespace campaigns, this isn't actually booked for Super Bowl. Star director Spike Jonze helms not just this ad but a really funny accompanying film, supposedly a behind the scenes documentary. Find it at Squarespace's YouTube page to see Elba get totally roasted by comedienne Lolly Adefope. As the man says, he's not known for comedy. Judging by these films, a whole new career awaits him.

It's less of a change of strategy than an evolution, with Idris Elba still on-board as the ambassador for the enhanced Sky Q multi-room multi-channel service. But Mother has opened up the campaign style a little more to ground it more firmly in customers' homes, rather than simply Idris's own pad."All too often, when a new agency comes on board, the impetus is to throw everything out and start afresh," says Mother partner Katie Mackay-Sinclair. "There was a lot that was working well for Sky; so the real opportunity was to augment what was already working by creating a new, richer brand world and a more emotional, insightful dimension to the campaign." -

  • "Prom Dress / DMV". Here's a great, unexpectedly edgy, very funny campaign from indie shop Erich & Kallman for General Mills' Reese's Puffs cereal. Though the majority of its marketing has always been squeaky clean family friendly, Big G has never been afraid of shaking things up from time to time. Remember how they upset the applecart a few years ago with some of the first packaged goods ads in America (for Cheerios) to feature same sex and interracial couples? And there's often been a darker sense of humour lurking behind the bright smiles. Now, these ads aren't going to start any revolutions, but top marks for acknowledging not only the angst-filled frustrations hiding behind teenage rites of passage, but also the fact that a fast sugar fix tops even a desire for independence or an end to the patriarchy. -

  • "Tokyo Dry 2". Here's a fabulously joyful spot from DDB New Zealand for the popular "dry" process spin-off from local hero beer Steinlager. (It's the brewing process made famous by Asahi Super Dry in which almost all the sugar is converted to alcohol to give lower calorie content and less of an aftertaste). And they know what they're talking about at Steinlager when they produce a Japanese-style lager: the brewery is a regional division of Kirin. It's a second bite of the cherry for Steinlager and DDB, who have teamed up before for this sort of Tokyo-themed culture mash-up, but this one is the best to-date. We've recently featured two fine English language films from Antoni Berlin for Mercedes-Benz; now it's the turn of Jung von Matt - nominally only BMW's main digital agency in Germany - to mount a challenge to the carmaker's US incumbent Goodby Silverstein, with a superb spot that is clearly intended for American consumption.   • "Get Money Calm". Here, finally, is the long-awaited debut campaign from Engine (formerly WCRS) for price comparison service MoneySupermarket, bringing to an end Mother's years-long incumbency. It's certainly a lot less memorable than virtually any of Mother's ads (even with the parachuting cat), but maybe that's part of the underlying strategy. Until now, MoneySupermarket's ads have been eye-grabbers pretty much just for the sake of being eye-grabbers, without saying anything at all about the product or what it does. There's clearly been a big shift away from that in the market, as Confused.com has already attempted to achieve. Engine's ad follows suit, though the inimitable Matt Berry's voiceover adds just a touch of crazy to the overall mix. Perhaps this will - at long last - encourage a similar shift on the part of CompareTheMarket and GoCompare as well. Can finally bid farewell to those annoying meerkats and cringe-inducing "Gio Compario"?

  • "Unleashed". Let me start by saying that ads featuring American athletes now need to clear a high bar to get featured here. I'm getting a bit fed up with the sheer ubiquity of the Serenas and the LeBrons and all the rest in advertising, shilling for just about any big name brand that can afford their rates and basking in adulation better suited to gods than mortals. But, having gotten that off my chest, now and then something special comes along, and this is one of those times. Their presence in Zambezi's new ad for Beats By Dre feels entirely appropriate (in a way it doesn't in the case of Lincoln or Sprite or Chase or whatever) and the ad itself is simply phenomenal, not just in terms of its athletic firepower but more importantly its creative skill. That fixed-camera set-up, moving in sync with each athlete's head is awe-inspiring. (How *did* they do that?) The director is Hiro Murai, best known for his music videos for Childish Gambino and others, and for the TV series 'Atlanta' and 'Barry' season 2. Fabulous work!

  • "There's Only One Sun". I posted a spot earlier today that was the epitome of everything we expect from Thai advertising: surreal, sentimental and slightly abrasive. Well here's one that's the epitome of British advertising: droll, deadpan, slightly odd and pleasantly old-fashioned. We're used to more straightforward Euro-pudding advertising from Nivea, made in Germany but designed to appeal to any regional audience. Well, now FCB Inferno gets the chance to put a distinctively small island spin on that marketing, probably because only the pale-skinned British would ever be foolish enough to consider going out in the noon day sun without any protection. It's like the sun baby from Teletubbies grew up and is now a lanky teenager. -

Jimmy Page himself narrates this fabulous animated film recounting the tale of his celebrated customised Fender 59 Telecaster, the guitar that took him from the Yardbirds through to the first Led Zeppelin album. It ties in with a relaunch by Fender of that original model, which now comes complete with a replica of Page's famous mirror accessories, so budding rock gods can customise the axe themselves as they see fit. The film was helmed by director duo Smith & Foulkes from top animation house Nexus Studios. It's a lovely little psychedelic trip down memory lane.   • "Make Them Sweat". There are some cute gags in the new global campaign from TBWA for Gatorade, but it takes a bit of time to really get going. It's odd how the frenetic fast-cut style adopted by Adidas and more recently Nike has made any sports-based advertising that takes things at a slightly gentler pace look almost geriatric by comparison. In this case, it's almost as if they couldn't decide whether to play it straight or go stylised. Seems to us this spot might have worked better cut down to 60 seconds with some of the training sequences excised. And more of the sweaty spider!   • "In The Time It Takes To Get There". Oh, this is fabulous! Adobe and Pereira & O'Dell launched a promotion last year asking contestants to design a movie poster using Adobe software; the best would be made into a real film. Student Sam West's winning design has now been (very loosely) adapted by writer and director (and former 'Scrubs' star) Zach Braff, and boy has he done Sam proud. This fantastic film is a wicked satire on the evils of modern-day social media influencers, but set in some imaginary pre-internet epoque. No apparent reason for that but it adds hugely to the fun and also the look of the piece. The cast is led by Florence Pugh and Alicia Silverstone - both excellent - and there's even a cheeky cameo from Andy King, infamous producer of the ill-fated FYRE festival, which in itself encapsulated everything that's wrong with the world of the Instagram influencer.   • "Baby". BETC's first big campaign for top French supermarket chain Leclerc has arrived, with two spots that remind us just how much those major life events actually cost. You're not having a baby (or a holiday, in the accompanying ad) but a big shopping list, so it's just as well Leclerc is not only famous for its low prices but also sells everything you might need. (Even nanny services?) It's a clever idea, and it makes sense as a campaign approach, but I'm not sure how well it comes across. It just makes those major life events sound like a bit of a downer. Might it have worked better without stating the Euro value of each of those items? Even at Leclerc that's a whopping great bill.

Various appropriate celebrities make cameo appearances including LA Dodgers' Justin Turner, NY Yankees Didi Gregorius, Houston Astros' José Altuve and the Cleveland Indians' Francisco Lindor. Those names don't mean much over here in the UK, but they're big names in MLB.

Riding high after his richly deserved Oscars win, Spike Lee lends his inestimable talents to Budweiser for this splendid film to mark the centenary of the birth of legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson. And all in time for the new season opening this week. Robinson's name may be familiar to readers outside the US, but perhaps not his achievement. He was the first ever black Major League Baseball player, breaking a long-established colour bar in the game. Despite playing only ten seasons for the Brooklyn Dodgers, he ended up as one of the sport's highest achieving athletes. Dentsu Aegis Network's Isobar worked with Lee on the campaign. This is actually the shorter version of the ad; there's also a full three minute version which pays tribute to various other members of minority groups who broke the mould in their chosen fields. -

  • "Privacy Matters". Apple has long made its ironclad security features a key selling point of the iPhone. That's led to some controversial situations in the past, not least when the company declined to help the FBI break into the iPhone of a terrorist killed on US soil in the course of a murderous attack. It's easy to be serious about issues like this, and certainly privacy matters, but we at Adbrands are inclined to feel that, sometimes, in areas like the war against terrorism, too much privacy can be bad for democracy. Anyway, this new campaign from Apple and TBWA Media Arts Lab deflates any soul-searching on such weighty issues with a series of funny vignettes which illustrate the human urge to maintain certain boundaries when it comes to personal privacy. The ad doesn't answer any of those bigger questions, but it certainly does amuse and entertain.

In the latest, a widower tackles an old recipe left behind by his departed wife. It may just be spaghetti al pomodoro but it summons up a succession of memories of a life well lived and loved.   • "Radiant Venom". Puma has teamed up with German footwear retailer Overkill for a limited edition resurrection of its classic Venom sneaker in a new colour scheme. The agency is Berlin-based creative boutique XY. Berliners (or regular visitors to that city) will recognise that this is set not on the surface of some distant planet but in a post-apocalyptic version of Berlin itself. Those are the ruins of the city's famous TV tower landmark. In fact the agency has constructed a whole back story, in which the explorer is merely a digital avatar for that recumbent girl, the last survivor of a nuclear disaster, collecting fragments of the past to keep herself alive. Phew! All that in 60 seconds, plus Joy Division on the soundtrack!

  • "Radiant Venom". Puma has teamed up with German footwear retailer Overkill for a limited edition resurrection of its classic Venom sneaker in a new colour scheme. The agency is Berlin-based creative boutique XY. Berliners (or regular visitors to that city) will recognise that this is set not on the surface of some distant planet but in a post-apocalyptic version of Berlin itself. Those are the ruins of the city's famous TV tower landmark. In fact the agency has constructed a whole back story, in which the explorer is merely a digital avatar for that recumbent girl, the last survivor of a nuclear disaster, collecting fragments of the past to keep herself alive. Phew! All that in 60 seconds, plus Joy Division on the soundtrack!

  • "Justify Nothing". In a big headline pitch last year, Publicis won the global creative account for Mercedes-Benz with the creation of a new dedicated entity Publicis Emil. That seemed to bode ill for incumbent agencies like German independent Antoni. Well, Emil can forget about ever getting its hands on lead creative if Antoni keep putting out ads like this superb film, filmed in region-non-specific Portugal, and made in English (like the Bertha Benz spot we featured last week) but in a such a way it can be language-adapted for almost any country. It's a brilliant piece of work, emotionally rich, quirky when it needs to be and featuring a fine central performance by Irish actor David Wilmot. It even contains a set of other life lesson vignettes that can be carved out as shorter ads in their own right, like the pregnant couple and the dad in a princess dress. A lovely little film.   • "Ultra Good Inside". So a dumbbell and a skateboard meet at a party... It's clearly a sign of the times that the latest mainstream launch from Australian beer Hahn - one of the lead brands in the portfolio of local brewery giant Lion - is a mainstream low-carb beer made partly from rice so it's also gluten-free. The brief to agency Thinkerbell was to avoid the four Bs of traditional beer advertising: blokes, banter, bars and barbecues. It was all looking pleasantly surreal until the last five seconds, when at least two of those rules get broken. That's definitely two blokes at the end and it may be a kitchen but it certainly looks like a bar. Also, how are they going to keep all those guests happy with only 10 bottles of beer? And only one bowl of crisps?!?

The Toyota Yaris has been made in Valenciennes since 2001, and just over a decade later became the first vehicle ever - ahead of Renault or Peugeot - to be granted the 'Origine France Garantie' stamp from the government, guaranteeing its French origins. You know what the French are like: that stamp of approval is of huge emotional importance to them. So in the same spirit, this ad too is 100% French: the locations, the set, all the props, the actors and all the production crew. Just not ownership of either the car or the agency... Formidable!

  • "Get Money Calm". Here, finally, is the long-awaited debut campaign from Engine (formerly WCRS) for price comparison service MoneySupermarket, bringing to an end Mother's years-long incumbency. It's certainly a lot less memorable than virtually any of Mother's ads (even with the parachuting cat), but maybe that's part of the underlying strategy. Until now, MoneySupermarket's ads have been eye-grabbers pretty much just for the sake of being eye-grabbers, without saying anything at all about the product or what it does. There's clearly been a big shift away from that in the market, as Confused.com has already attempted to achieve. Engine's ad follows suit, though the inimitable Matt Berry's voiceover adds just a touch of crazy to the overall mix. Perhaps this will - at long last - encourage a similar shift on the part of CompareTheMarket and GoCompare as well. Can finally bid farewell to those annoying meerkats and cringe-inducing "Gio Compario"?

  • "Sport the Unexpected". Venables Bell & Partners' final campaign for soon-to-depart client Reebok is either a work of genius or a bizarre satirical in-joke. To be honest we can't decide. We wondered at first if we were watching a trailer for Jordan Peele's new movie. It's certainly creepy enough for the first half of its running time, before it somehow morphs into a K-Pop music video. Unexpected is right. Still, the client clearly loved it. It will be interesting to see how newly appointed Deutsch build on the Reebok brand once they get their hands on it. It follows up a campaign we featured here last year which aimed to show how the bank can help when you're struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one. That was more of a period piece. The new spot - aimed at families coping with divorce - is even more acutely observed and beautifully judged, making this couple's child its centre of gravity and presenting both sides of the break-up with equal compassion. There's no specific program in place for life's various emergencies, but Westpac is making a formal promise that it will understand its customers' concerns and will provide assistance.   • "Prom Dress / DMV". Here's a great, unexpectedly edgy, very funny campaign from indie shop Erich & Kallman for General Mills' Reese's Puffs cereal. Though the majority of its marketing has always been squeaky clean family friendly, Big G has never been afraid of shaking things up from time to time. Remember how they upset the applecart a few years ago with some of the first packaged goods ads in America (for Cheerios) to feature same sex and interracial couples? And there's often been a darker sense of humour lurking behind the bright smiles. Now, these ads aren't going to start any revolutions, but top marks for acknowledging not only the angst-filled frustrations hiding behind teenage rites of passage, but also the fact that a fast sugar fix tops even a desire for independence or an end to the patriarchy. -

  • "The Hybrid You Can Feel". The first big campaign from Honda's new pan-European agency is a big disappointment compared to the fine work we've come to expect from the local offices of Wieden & Kennedy and McGarryBowen. Hakuhodo Collective is a dedicated unit drawing upon that Japanese group's handful of European subsidiaries, most notably the Paris outpost of Sid Lee. You might have expected better from that usually interesting agency. These are supposedly genuine testimonials from a collection of "real" Honda drivers across Europe. They're all suspiciously photogenic though, with distinctively actorly voices, and I've never heard such manufactured-sounding endorsements. "Onroad, offroad... it's still a road, right?" "It's like I can drive further than the horizon." Seriously, who talks like that apart from a copywriter? We already know Europe is, financially at least, one of Honda's least important regions. This Euro-pudding really emphasises that fact.

  • "The Hybrid You Can Feel". The first big campaign from Honda's new pan-European agency is a big disappointment compared to the fine work we've come to expect from the local offices of Wieden & Kennedy and McGarryBowen. Hakuhodo Collective is a dedicated unit drawing upon that Japanese group's handful of European subsidiaries, most notably the Paris outpost of Sid Lee. You might have expected better from that usually interesting agency. These are supposedly genuine testimonials from a collection of "real" Honda drivers across Europe. They're all suspiciously photogenic though, with distinctively actorly voices, and I've never heard such manufactured-sounding endorsements. "Onroad, offroad... it's still a road, right?" "It's like I can drive further than the horizon." Seriously, who talks like that apart from a copywriter? We already know Europe is, financially at least, one of Honda's least important regions. This Euro-pudding really emphasises that fact.

  • "F1 2019 Season Launch". Interesting to read Lewis Hamilton's comments over the weekend about the collapsing TV audience for Formula 1 racing. Almost 9m UK viewers watched Hamilton claim his first F1 championship in 2008. Fewer than 2m watched his latest victory in Mexico last season. "I didn't know those numbers," he told an interviewer. "That sounds terrible from a business point of view. That's definitely not cool. I remember growing up and turning on BBC and watching the Grand Prix, it was awesome." The reason, of course, is Sky, which has acquired exclusive live rights for all apart from the British Grand Prix, and tucked them behind a £10-per-month pay-wall. That's even bigger money for the F1 teams and organisation, of course, but Lewis Hamilton already has more cash than he knows what to do with. He's voiced a valid concern about the long-term effects of restricting the audience. This isn't football after all, with a much bigger, broader following. Still, here's the handsome ad produced by Sky's inhouse creative team to launch the 2019 season, a track through the ages of Formula 1. Nice to hear the old 'Grand Prix' TV theme again - Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' of course - still in business after all these years.

A week after his Turkish Airlines extravaganza, here's an even more lavish spectacular for Hennessy cognac, developed in partnership with DDB Paris. With the very greatest of respect, Sir Ridley, please don't give up your day job in movies. Scott is one of the greatest feature film directors of the past 40 years, but once you move on from commercials it's very hard to go backwards again into shortform. As a result, this film resembles one of those bloated epics they used to make back in the 80s, like Hugh Hudson's infamous 'Swimming Pool' for B&H; then the most expensive ad ever made. It's all glitter - and such amazing glitter too - but with no substance, no personality, no humanity. And this is only the 60-second cut; wait until you see the full four-minute version. When it comes to ads, unless you're making a joke of epic, small is better.

  • "The More That You See...". RPA partnered with the Dr Seuss estate for this charming animation for Farmers Insurance. It follows in the same theme as the long-running Hall of Claims campaign, in which JK Simmons (of 'Whiplash' and 'Counterpart' fame) plays the custodian of a museum of strange-but-true accidents, all based on real claims handled by Farmers. Indeed, the campaign's slogan "We know a thing or too because we've seen a thing or two" has always sounded very Seussian, so how appropriate to team up with Theodor Geissel's immortal creations to celebrate what would have been his 115th birthday on Sunday. That's Simmons on voiceover of course; shame he had to rush through it to get in under the 60-second mark.

House agencies DDB and Serviceplan worked together on the campaign to ensure that it's really not one you could possibly overlook. 'Dabei' literally means "there", but in the sense of "Be There" - or as this campaign entreats - "Let's All Be There Together". In a world where most telecoms companies tend to go for greater subtlety, this In Your Face approach certainly makes you sit up and pay attention.   • "The New Normal". Ten US states have now completely decriminalised marijuana for adults over 21 (matching the restrictions on alcohol) while another 22 have legalised it for medicinal purposes. Pretty soon, weed will be just as normal as booze. MedMen is one of the leading developers of medicinal cannabis, and they secured the support of star director Spike Jonze to helm this superb film promoting the normalisation of pot, which is getting limited airplay on some cable channels and in cinemas. "The truth is, in middle-income white America, cannabis is already pretty normal," argues actor and activist Jesse Williams, who provides the voiceover. "White people know their kids smoke weed... They're selling it, and buying it, but it's not that big of a deal... But when black and brown folks do it, we're thrown in cages for the rest of our lives..." Even now, there are still people who are locked up for a plant that is now legal in almost half of the United States. That surely doesn't make sense. You might be surprised to learn that this is apparently Coke's first completely new flavour since 2006, presumably since those weird coffee variants. However that calculation excludes all the bizarre combinations under which Diet Coke is currently being marketed, and from which classic Coke has been excluded until now. Well, we guess everyone will have to at least just try it to decide whether the experiment is justified. We hate to sound negative but both the flavour and also this spot from Wieden & Kennedy smack just a little of desperation. There was a time when W&K made superb spots for Big Red Soda but those times seem to have passed. -

Anomaly's new ad for Ally Bank - what used to be GM Financial - is cute, but would have had considerably more impact had it not followed so closely in the footsteps of AT&T's 'Just OK is Not OK' campaign which debuted last month. They're basically the same idea. Both campaigns even have near-identical sushi, tattoo, babysitter and mechanic gags. That's probably just an unfortunate accident of timing; but all things considered it might have been better if Ally had postponed this campaign and tried something else instead. Surely this wasn't the only idea Anomaly presented. Still, putting all that to one side, it's a funny idea, with some clever vignettes.

  • "Flight". Apple has booked a slot in tonight's Brit Awards (think of it as the UK's Grammys) for this stunning film from renowned director Jonathan Glazer. As usual, it was developed inhouse by Apple with support from TBWA\Media Arts Lab. Its star is the extraordinary Finnish "airdancer" Inka Tiitto, a world champion indoor skydiver. If you don't already know what indoor skydiving entails, it uses something like the wind tunnels they use for testing automobiles but turned upright. Anyone can do it, but few people manage the grace and poetry demonstrated here. It would be interesting to know how much - some? all? none? - of this film was shot up in the sky for real as opposed to in an indoor tunnel and then digitally enhanced. I mean, if Tom Cruise could do it for Mission Impossible 6...

That's the warning offered by this funny new spot from BBDO Proximity for Saint Maclou, the French interior design chain that forms part of the vast Mulliez retail conglomerate (which is also home to Auchan, Decathlon and Leroy Merlin). Rather than sell you furnishings for you to install yourself, the store sends in its own craftsmen to do the job for you. The comic vignettes are well-conceived building nicely from moderately challenging to seriously dangerous. -
