  • Hands up if you hate it when your jumps swing and are out of control? 🙋‍♂️ Me too! Here’s the good news... YOU have the power to correct and control this common mistake 🙌🏻 Follow this workflow and always think of these key words when jumping, tall and narrow.

Exercise: Salchow workflow
Skill Type: Jumps technique
Difficulty: Intermediate +
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHY

Learn to stay tall, narrow, and connected
Understand workflow
Refine technique⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW
———
I won’t breakdown all the technical points of the jump, as I want you to look at the general workflow through the different stages.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The sequence of exercises progress from the simplest to hardest. This is how you want to approach your practice, because it sets you up to succeed more than you fail 🙌🏻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each phase of the jump is very clear, all staying as close a possible to the barrier. The three turn, pivot, takeoff, transfer, and landing positron. As you progress through each phase make sure each remains clear and strong as the exercise speeds up.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
Always hit the toe forwards on the takeoff, never swing or pull the front arm, always drive from the back arm and free-leg, this helps align the body correctly. The same concept applies regardless if you’re doing a single, double, triple, or quad jump.

Warning, I'm about to repeat myself. Jump tall and narrow please, thank you 🙏🏻

  • On a scale of 1-10 how flexible are you? 🤸‍♀️ I often like to improvise when I’m warming up, cooling down, or working on new flexibility exercises. The human body has so many hard to reach spots I think it’s important switch it up and change the angles to hit all parts of the body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHAT
———
Name: Standing straddle flow
Skill Type: Off-ice
Difficulty: Beginner +
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHY
———
Improve mobility and flexibility
Warm up or cool down exercise
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW
———
When following this movement flow it’s important to first ground your feet and always have your core engaged, this will help control and balance the movements. P.S. That tip works the same on the ice 😉
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The wider you set your feet the deeper the stretch. Make sure when the back is straight your really flatten off your lower back by pulling your belly button in to the spine.⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
When the arms are extended reach all the way to the end of your finger tips. Try and incorporate your breathe with every movement. Breathing in start the movement, hold, then a nice long deep exhale at the end. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s no rush to get through the sequence, in fact the longer you hold the better, enjoy each position 😇 If you find a stiff or sore spot, stay in the spot for a little longer to help release it 😌
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
TOP TIP
————
Please NEVER force a stretch! The key to improving your flexibility and for fluid movement is to relax and take you time. I’ll be sharing more tips and tricks to help improve you flexibility in the future.

  • Do you find it hard to cross your feet during you axel? One thing I can assure you is it’s very hard to practice the correct movement in the middle of the jump 🤪 That’s why I recommend working on the movements in isolation. This is exercise can and should be practiced both off and on ice 🙌🏻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHAT
———
Exercise: Axel transfer
Skill Type: Off-ice
Difficulty: Beginner +
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
WHY
———
Learn how to isolate movements
Train transfer and air position
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW
———
The goal is to recreate the desired movement pattern in isolation, moving slowly first then progressing to actual speed of movement.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
For extra tips make sure you watch my landing position and axel takeoff videos in the highlights for alignment and step through advice.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As you pivot to your takeoff foot make sure you keep the same shoulder and hip in front, in my example it’s the left. Bend and draw the free-leg and both arms behind you. Then drive the free-leg through directly under your hip and arms close the body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Step over to your free-leg and squeeze into a tall and tight backspin position. Make sure you keep the shoulder closed (left in my example) as you do this movement, allow for a small pivot from the takeoff foot to the step over foot.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
TOP TIP
————
Practice in the mirror to check your movement pattern.

  • Time to spice up your lunge game 🌶 It’s very important to keep mixing up your warmups and workouts. Your body gets bored doing the same thing all the time, as I’m sure you do 🙈 Variety is the spice of life and your body will thank you for it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
Speaking of thanks, I want you thank and tag someone who has really helped you in any aspect of your life recently 😊 I thank @ameliaskating for everything she personally sacrifices and does for me, learning to skate so she can film on ice is just one thing of many Amelia has done to make my dream of @coachhamish a reality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHAT
———
Name: Crossover lunge
Skill Type: Off-ice
Difficulty: Beginner +
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
WHY
———
Functional warmup
Strengthen legs
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HOW
———
This exercise makes a great warmup exercise. It simulates the crossover action on the floor. Make sure you keep the body upright and hips level throughout. I like to put my hands on my hip bones to check my hip stability during the movement.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lunge the first foot to the side, then cross the second foot in front of the first foot. Uncross the first foot and lunge to side again, then this time cross the second foot behind the first. Repeat this movement for at between 6-12 lunges going both directions.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
Make sure you drop as low as you can at the end of the cross action, ensuring the knees track above the toes. Try not to stick your booty out when you drop 🙈
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
TOP TIP
————
For a more intense workout you can hold weights in your hands 💪🏻

  • Last night was my last LTS lesson of the summer - testing night. I was hoping to pass all the way through Basic 4 / Adult 4 (one of my LTS classes had us doing the regular basic skills program, and one had us doing the adult program, but they’re pretty much the same so 🤷🏻‍♀️). I was a little nervous because while I can definitely perform all of the skills in Basic / Adult 4, I still sometimes struggle with my outside edges on a circle - consistency is not totally there. Last night I felt strong though, and I skated my best (and I have to believe the new skates are already helping me be more confident in those edges!). I’m so proud of myself and the progress I’ve made in the past 8 months despite my pre-existing concussion issues and my sprained ankle. I may not be progressing at the same speed as others, but my pace is my pace, last night I was actually able to embrace that. Now onwards to the last two levels of basic skills, and after that... well, the future awaits! #USFSA #basicskills #iceskating #iceskater #figureskating #figureskater #adultfigureskating #adultfigureskater #adultsskatetoo @adultsskatetoo

  • In skating camp I finally managed to land a loop! (Ft. My mom sounding approving in the background)
I know it's not much of a jump yet and it's pretty underrotated but at least I landed on one foot instead of two like before.
This jump has been a real struggle the whole last season😅

  • Is it obvious how much grief I get from backspins? I’ve been feeling okay to try them since starting to get to do consistent twizzles, but boy it’s hard. It’s hard and scary and I thought I got up on my toe pick a lot in normal spins (wow I was wrong). I feel like I’m just so lost in starting these bc if I go into them from a three turn I end up twizzling my heart out. Which, ace (starting to like twizzles) but it’s not really a backspin. I’m gonna have to practice these on my spinner, I swear. Just to at least get comfy with the motion. Any tips on these?

We’ve all been there, there is and will always be moments in your skating that stand out. Whether it’s when you first landed your axel or getting your Biellmann spin. Ever skater will experience the wonderful sense of accomplishment that comes from all the countless hours of hard work you’ve put in 🙌🏻

I can tell you the location and year of nearly all of my personal achievements that stand out to me. As a skater, when I first landed my double axel in Swindon 🇬🇧 ice rink 2002, or my first triple toe in Kiev 🇺🇦 2003. As a coach, when I helped my first student to get their double axel in Chicago 🇺🇸 2009. Standing at the boards supporting my first skater to become a national champion in Athens 🇬🇷 2013. A skater and family I still remain close friends with years after they retired from competing, who I got to watch graduate high school this summer 😊

A memory that will always stand out to me was last year in Guildford 🇬🇧, when a student of mine, Jess, had decided to stop skating as she had to decide where to focus her time and energy, in either skating or her stage career. During Jessica’s final day on the ice and in her final lesson with me, Jess finally landed her axel clean 🎉 It was the best final skate Jess could have wished for and made me a very proud coach. Both Jess and I will share that memory forever, of how happy we were jumping for joy at 8:45 in the morning 😊🤩🤪😇 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
