😬 This “Instead of this/try this” post is a LITTLE different from my others - most of the time, the intent behind these posts is NOT to say “EXERCISE #1 is BAD and EXERCISE #2 IS GOOD.”⠀
⠀
🤟HOWEVER, performing arts culture, I LOVE YOU BUT WE GOTTA TALK. Passively pushing on knees (outside of the direct supervision of a physiotherapist) IS SOMETHING I JUST CANNOT GET BEHIND. ⠀
⠀
🦵I understand that some of you have knees that don’t straighten all the way. I do, I promise. HOWEVER, there are many reasons that this might be- and if you just blindly throw 10 pound weight bags (or your friend/coaches full body weight….) on your knees to straighten them out, you MIGHT actually be doing more harm than good. Repeated passive overpressure on a joint at end range — PLUS a lack of concurrent muscular engagement - can predispose you to acute ligamentous injuries and also may lead to long term joint problems. ⠀
⠀
🤔There are MANY reasons knees don’t straighten all the way. Maybe this is due to a past trauma or surgery, maybe its “structural” and they’ve always been that way, or maybe it’s an adaptive shortening of the muscle and connective tissue surrounding the back of your knee. There is NO quick and dirty way to tell what the cause is, but you know who CAN help you out with this and get you on a SAFE knee straightening program? ⠀ 🤓 YUP, your local physio!⠀
⠀
😏 IN THE MEAN TIME, instead of permanently altering the structural integrity and biomechanics of your knee, I’ve given you a second alternative (swipe to see the full exercise). The drill in the bottom photo is (…I’m gonna say it…) BETTER *because* it is an ACTIVE exercise. Because of the band placement, it facilitates BOTH hip stabilizer AND knee straightener strengthening in a way that focuses on MUSCULAR CONTROL of your end range knee extension INSTEAD of passive overpressure. We want our knee straightening exercises to BULLETPROOF our knees, NOT make them vulnerable to injury!⠀
⠀
