I started reading Skyward this morning and I’m already completely enthralled by it! I knew it would be good based on what people have said, but it’s exceeding even that. I can’t wait to see where it goes! 🤩⁣

  • Hey bookies ☕️
Huge F•R•I•E•N•D•S fan right here 🙋🏼‍♀️ My love for this show runs deep, so much so that (for my birthday) my parents gave me a replica of the iconic F•R•I•E•N•D•S door — which is currently being crafted & installed. Keep an eye out on my stories tomorrow, I’ll be posting the progress. I’m such a nerd when it comes to anything tv/movie/book related 😂

🧸QOTD: what is the coolest item of merchandise you own? Or wish you owned?

[2.5/5🌟]
“If you could go back and do London all over again, knowing everything you know now, would you do it?”
- Christine Riccio, “Again But Better”
*
*
Again But Better is popular booktuber Christine’s debut novel. It’s a YA (New Adult??) Contemporary novel with a wibbley wobbly timey wimey twist. The main character Shayne travels to London to study writing & intern at a magazine along she way she falls in love with a boy named Pilot. Unfortunately, she does it all wrong and leaves without truly taking advantage of the opportunities, but she gets a second chance to do it all over.
*
*
I love Christine have been watching her channel for years—but her writing was weak & awkward. In my opinion it read like a wattpad fan fiction that she jammed as many relatable pop culture references into as possible. The novel is a self-insert Christine really wrote about what she knows, herself, the MC is her. Also I can’t get on board with the romanticization of cheating throughout the book. I also find the representation of social anxiety in this book problematic—it can be a horrible thing that negatively affects people and it seemed like a quirky/cute character trait in the book. I did really like the study abroad element & the message behind the story. Go out there & chase your dreams don’t hold yourself back worrying about how other people will see you, but that was really only the saving grace for me. This was an enjoyable book, but I wouldn’t say it was amazing. Parts of it made me cringe, but I did get a few laughs out of it & it did have a personal affect on me. Try Anna & The French Kiss if you’re looking for something similar—but better 😅

  • A reminder to myself and others that if you’re not gelling with a book, put that sucker down. For most of my life, I wouldn’t have subscribed to this notion. I would be waylaid by guilt if I even had the inclination to DNF a book. I think in some circumspect way, I was trying to give each book its “fair chance”. But let’s be honest, nobody has time for that. And there’s also no dearth of options for reading material...hell, every Tuesday, dozens of new books are published. So, relax the expectation that once you’ve begun a story, you must see it to its end. And if you find yourself in a situation like I found myself yesterday, wherein I was trying to justify finishing a 400 page book for the sake of a few beautifully-written passages, maybe reconsider. In the end, I put that book aside and spent the evening paging through some Hustvedt, and I don’t regret a thing 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Smart is not just good grades and the ability to recite facts. Smart is a way of thinking. It’s being creative and taking a new approach. It extends well beyond the classroom environment and is displayed in many wonderful and seemingly simple ways.
I LOVE this message and I LOVE this book for featuring it in such a wonderful way. It gives a wide variety of examples of what smart looks like and the illustrations are so bright and appealing. It is so empowering for children to recognize their strengths and the many ways they are smart. I have ALL the love for this book! For a peek inside check out my Stories.

  • Hello and happy Tuesday book nuggets! 🌸 I'm planning to go out shopping with my aunt and my mom today. We're going to an Amish market that's pretty far away but they have gobs that I can eat!
▪️
QOTD : What is a treat that you usually only get at a certain place? Or a certain time? ▪️
AOTD : I have a few! Since I don't know how to make gobs and I'm certainly not driving two hours to buy one, I usually only get one when my family comes up to PA in the summer. And there are NO bubble/Boba tea places near me so I make sure to stop and get one whenever I find myself in Tampa, FL!
▪️
This is a stack that I'm in need of reading! I almost read Wintersong this month but ended up grabbing Fawkes instead. Maybe I can get to it after I finish that. 🤔 My TBR pile hates me! Lolol
▪️
Well, I hope you all have a fantastic rest of your day! Love ya'll! 💜💙

Hey, friends! How has your week been going so far? I have to say, mine has been off to a rocky start. Writing has been a grind, and tbh, I haven't gotten much done. After last week's lightning productivity, I think I've hit a bit of a slow patch. But that's okay. I'm learning not to push myself to exhaustion, and instead let my batteries recharge by reading and doing research. I should be back in business shortly, I think!
.
.
[reading update]
I'm still reading Oathbringer (of course), but I have also just picked up The Hazel Wood, which I took the plunge and bought without reading last week (ahaha, a bold step, I know). I'm about 1/4 of the way in, and so far, I am intrigued. The idea has captured me, but I can't say I love the protagonist all that much. So far, she kind of seems like one of those people who would drive me nuts in real life. But I'm interested enough by the premise to keep on going. Have you read this book? Did you like it?

Anyhow, I hope you all are having a lovely Tuesday! What are you up to? What are you reading at the moment?

  • Any fun summer plans this week??⁣
⁣
I took my boys on a mini adventure today to visit a nearby State Park. Thought it was a good chance to do the #bookswhereyoulive challenge and giveaway that @my.boys.mom is running through tomorrow. I live on the other side of the lake, near those beautiful Utah mountains that look so small in this picture. ⁣

Earlier today @literarypengwyns challenged me to participate in the #bluebookstack tag as well. So I’m double dipping with this photo! #twobirdsonestone⁣

📄Ridna Mova Publishing House @ridnamova

  • 📚 What was the first or last Agatha Christie book you read? .
.
The other week my husband came home with a second-hand collection of 85 Agatha Christie books which he brought from someone in our neighbourhood. I turned to bookstagram for recommendations of what AC novel I should read first as I've never read any of her books! I was overwhelmed by your enthusiastic responses and the book I will be reading first is: And Then There Were None - a book so many of you recommended. Thank you for your help! ❤
.
.
I have to say that while this hardcover collection is very colourful, it's also very mysterious. For some reason the books don't have a blurb on the back or inside. So I have no idea what each book is about. And while I know I can Google the titles (which we will do when we get around to shelving these books to keep series together), I kind of like the idea of picking up a mystery and not knowing anything about it..

  • QOTD: What are some books with some seriously bad ass babes featured? 🛡
.
.
.
AOTD: Alyssa feels that the females in The Lunar Chronicles always deserve shoutouts. Annie has to highlight Moria and Ashyn in Age of Legends series for they’re awesomeness. Honestly, there are so many babes we look up to... too many to count. 🛡
.
.
.
Splintered is such a great series and Alyssa has become a personal fave of ours. This is seriously one of our favorite Alice retellings. The magic, the romance, the oddities... it was just all handled so well. If you’re looking for a great read, don’t hesitate to read this series. 🛡

  • Confession time❕⁣
⁣
I’ve been spending way too much time with Stranger Things and not enough time with books. Every book I’ve tried to start since The Gifted School has left me feeling “meh”. I’m hoping one of my backlist books might get me away from Netflix / HBO Now and back to reading every night!
⁣
If anyone has any reading slump tips, please DM me or comment below. 😫

  • I finally completed my classroom library. In May, I had zero books. Now, I have over a thousand. Thanks again to all of the students, parents, fellow teachers and librarians for donating books. Without you, this masterpiece would not have been possible. 💕 #classroomlibrary #growingreaders #allthebooks #thirdgrade

  • I'm so glad that I listened to Kwame Alexander read his novel (with Mary Rand Hess), Swing. It's the first time I've experienced his verse via audio, and his reading brought this book to vivid life the story of seventeen-year-old Noah and his best friends Walt and Sam. Walt, who wants to be known as Swing, desires to be a baseball star, loves jazz, and is "famous" for knowing the way that famous people died. Noah has been in love with Sam since they were children, but she's in a relationship with Cruz, a handsome baseball star at their high school. Walt urges Noah to tell Sam about how he feels, but Noah can't gather the courage. Alexander starts there and then moves through these characters' lives with an eye for the small details that bring them and their beautiful friendships to life. Strong, moving novel--this would be a great read (or listen!) for high school students.⠀

  • Book 58.
"Forgiven are the starry-eyed, for they know not why they love."
✨
I wish I could say this book is a perfect beach read. It's not. It's something else. It's special. It's heartbreaking. It's deep, and dark, and heavy. But so so good. ✨
I'm sorry if I'm being vague. But this #bookreview is so hard to write. The story follows a teenager, in her junior year, Andie. She's the goodie two shoes who does her homework, enjoys her after school jazz band, follows her curfew, doesn't drink, smoke, or brake any rules. She has friends and family that trust her fully. And then enters Josh. Andie crushes on him from the beginning - he's good looking, he's a genius at a piano, every girl seems to want him. But he chooses her. And what seems like a teenage love story, it turns for the worst, as he's not what he appears to be. The relationship turns abusive **ok, this could be considered a spoiler, but I want to make sure that those that choose to read this, know about all the triggers in this book**
✨
This book is beautifully written. Very descriptive and it allowed for me to feel what Andie was feeling at her worst, and her best. I could feel all the hesitations she felt. I wanted to shake her more often than not for making the wrong choices. But also, I felt like I've heard all those excuses from abused person before. Especially "he's just having an off day", "he's not like that most of the time" "I'll do better next time". It felt realistic. I teared up at one point, and felt so sad for Andie. But the reality is, this happens more often than we want to think about, and it seems very isolating, and hopeless.
✨
I'm happy to say, this book ended on a pretty good note, a hopeful one. If you got all the way here, and feel like you need to read this book, here are all the TW: mental and physical abuse, sexual assault, rape, harming yourself, alcohol use, mentioning of drugs. ✨
Also, if you ever feel abused and hopeless there is help out there. As the author provided here are some places to find out more information on abusive relationships: 1-866-331-9474 www.loveisrespect.org
Please reach out to someone, you are never alone. 💗💗💗💗💗

  • Last month I rekindled my love for short story collections, first with Leila Aboulela’s, ‘Elsewhere, Home’ and then with this stunning book right here, ‘Salt Slow’ by Julia Armfield.
…✨
Armfiled uses this collection to explore some of the realities of being a woman in society, from childhood to adolescence to adulthood. This collection was nauseatingly good with descriptions vivid enough to make your skin crawl and leave you feeling just about the right side of uncomfortable.
If you’d rather not consider the body in all of its glory- skin, blood and bone, then maybe this book isn’t for you, however, if you’re after an original, gross in all its brilliance, short story collection you really ought to consider this one!
