  • Hawaii brought the jungle vibes so strong! It was a surreal experience so I tried to stay off-line as much as possible and just enjoy it all for what it was. We are currently in NYC but expect some aloha spam over the next 5 years, it was that good. Thanks @rodrigomoraesphotography for capturing our Demba fam so well. 🖤✌🏾

  • Not that I needed convincing again, but being in the water yesterday and working for shots like this, I was reminded that water is insanely powerful...maybe the most powerful of all natural resources. With no effort it pounds, slams, and churns. At the same time, it mesmerizes, mystifies, and creates moments of intense fun. Just looking back at this wave, especially with the sun and pink sky in the background, I sit in awe. Nature is so inspiring and life-giving. And Hawai'i...oh how beautiful she is! Mahalo ke Akua nona ka aina, ka lani, a ke kai. Think on these things. 'Night y'all. #alohaoutsider #carpealoha

♥There will always be those who want to bring us down. They throw stones of hatred, discrimination, and resentment in efforts to get us to end our journey to success. At first, we can feel buried under a prison pile of stones. But, we are not meant to stay buried. We must pick ourselves up and use the stones the haters threw at us to build our empire. Never let anyone degrade your worth or subjugate you to peasantry. Rise my royals, we all are kings and queens to rule our own destiny. Go and build your empires with courage! ♥⁣

  • There's an old quip that says "Silence is the cross on which we must crucify our ego." If only this were easy! If only this were something I could've learned long ago and began practicing then! It's such a true statement. How many times would you, would I, would any of us, have done much more good for the world had we just kept our mouths shut and dismissed our egos??? Many! So, hey, let's consider this together AND try practicing it together. Let's make our world better together. Think on these things. 'Night y'all. #alohaoutsider #carpealoha

  • It's been said that “The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.” I think that's spot on. I've spent the last three weeks hosting my childhood best friend and have experienced just that.

Over the last twenty years, we've kept in touch, but we've probably only seen each other once every few years. Life, in a sense, has continued on. Indeed, adult life has taken up time and all the responsibilities have demanded our attention. Yet, it's as if the first 18 or so years of life always bring us back. The old jokes, stories, and memories remind us that, while we have grown separately, we've not grown apart.

For that, I'm grateful. Not everyone has that. It's a gift. So, I'd encourage you, if you're reaching this, to go give an old pal a call if you can. If you can't, then sit down for a few minutes and scroll through your memories. It'll be time well spent. Think on these things. 'Night y'all. #alohaoutsider #carpealoha

  • There's an old Latin word that we've brought into English that I just love: "desideratum." This word means "the feeling of longing for something lost." Desideratum can be the feeling of longing for a lost friend, a lost past, a lost parent, a lost item, a lost moment, etc.

In life, so many experience desideratum. In fact, I think many experience it way more than they even realize. If you are one who is self-aware enough to be able to recognize it, that's a good thing. At least then, you'll be able to put a name or word to it and begin to process it. That, in turn, gives you some control over it.

My view is that the more precise we are with our words, the healthier we can be mentally, emotionally, relationally, spiritually, physically, etc. There words we use to think about ourselves and our lives shape us. And if we lack words for something, then that lack of vocabulary also shapes us. It leaves a hole...leaves us floundering a bit. So, take your speech seriously. It matters. Think on these things. • Although there are a lot of deadbeat dudes out there, guys who leave their kids hanging, men who drop the weight of their share of parenting on the women, there are some good fathers. Kudos to y'all! Keep it goin'! For many, this is a hard day.

Some have lost their dads or father-figures to death or incarceration. Some have never known or met their dads. It can be a day of heartache. As Tupac once said of his non-present dad, "He passed away and I didn't cry, 'cause my anger wouldn't let me feel for a stranger." For those can relate, stay strong and be the best man and dad that you can in spite of it. Be for your kids what you knew you always wanted and what you have longed for.

And, again, for all those out there doing it right, for those doing what they should be, for those trying to raise good kids, for those being present...happy father's day. I hope it was a good one. You deserve it. Think on these things. 'Night y'all. #alohaoutsider #carpealoha

In all honesty, this has been probably the worst week I’ve had since moving to Hawai’i. Every aspect of my life has been stressful, exhausting, and seemingly not worth it. Things are on the up now and I’m reminded how blessed I am to be living the life I chose. I’m thankful and grateful beyond measure for my Heavenly Father and his grace and mercies on this Father’s Day! ❤️😊🤙🏻

  • Lately, the sun is looking like it sets just a few feet away from my lanai. It's as if I can reach out and touch it. It's larger than life and appears to be within grasp. It reminds me that, in life, things aren't always what they appear to be. Indeed, these ever-so-close sunsets make my jaw drop, heart pound, and spirit rejoice but, to the naked eye, these simply appear to be one thing: incredible sunsets. And they are that. But to those with clearer eyes, spiritual eyes, or "eyes to see," these aren't merely sunsets, they're displays of God's beauty and examples of his handiwork. They are examples of his glory. No, things aren't always what they seem. Vision and clarity aren't the same things. Look closer. Think on these things. 'Night y'all. #alohaoutsider #carpealoha

  • As every photographer knows, half the work comes with putting yourself in the right place at the right time. Sure, much can be manufactured with Photoshop and similar programs today, but there's just something about getting out, doing it raw, and having a real encounter with whatever nature decides to put on display. And the interactions with nature can be amazing and breathtaking. It's truly astounding what happens sometimes when humans and nature work in tandem to produce something beautiful. So, get out this weekend and take nature's hand and create something wonderful and worthwhile. Think on these things. 'Night y'all. #alohaoutsider #carpealoha
