  • A pencil drawing of the cuirassed statue of the Roman Emperor Hadrian.

Hadrian was a great lover of Greek culture and rebuilt and added many structures to Athens.

This statue was originally placed in the Stoa of Zeus. The chest piece that he wears is called a cuirass. Note the children Romulus and Remus that are sucking the wolf. Romulus and Remus are legendary twins who, after being abandoned, were suckled by a wolf and in adulthood founded the city of Rome. Thus the wolf and twins evokes the memory of (the founding of) Rome.

The goddess Athena stands upon the wolf, indicating how Hadrian viewed Greek culture as being supported by Rome.

Hadrian (Latin: Publius Aelius Hadrianus Augustus; 24 January 76 – 10 July 138) was Roman emperor from 117 to 138. He was born Publius Aelius Hadrianus in Italica, near Santiponce, Spain into a Hispano-Roman family. His father was of senatorial rank and was a first cousin of Emperor Trajan. He married Trajan's grand-niece Vibia Sabina early in his career, before Trajan became emperor and possibly at the behest of Trajan's wife Pompeia Plotina. Plotina and Trajan's close friend and adviser Lucius Licinius Sura were well disposed towards Hadrian. When Trajan died, his widow claimed that he had nominated Hadrian as emperor immediately before his death.

Now this statue is located just meters away from the temple of Hephaestus in the Ancient Agora of Athens.
50cm x 35cm , 2011.

  • Tower of Winds⠀
An early 19th-century view of the interior of the Tower of Winds in Athens. The ascetic followers of Rumi are seen here performing their transcendental dance. ⠀
⠀
James Stuart was an 18th-century British architect who documented a substantial number of Greek buildings, gaining popularity as James ‘Athenian’ Stuart. ⠀
⠀
In his book ‘The Antiquities of Athens,’ Stuart tells us how the building served as a tekke, a gathering place for whirling Dervishes. However, the floor was covered in debris causing a hindrance to free movement. ⠀
⠀
Stuart requested the Sheikh (head dervish) to allow him to dig inside, to which he agreed promptly. The existing flooring was removed, under which were found the original marble slabs, 7 feet down. ⠀
⠀ ⠀
Illustration adapted from 'Views in Greece' by Edward Dodwell published at London in 1821. ⠀
