  • I’ve been reflecting on what Black History Month means to me, after a beautiful conversation with an elder. We talked about her experiences celebrating Negro History Week and attending the March on Washington. And, I felt a rush of gratitude for the blood, tears, and sweat of my ancestors. However, I also felt embarrassment. When had I last really acknowledged or celebrated this month? So, I decided to share some of the living heroes and heroines who’ve made a difference in the world, the black community, and my life. And, I included an excerpt from one of my favorite poets just because. 👸🏾🤴🏾
I was born in the congo
I walked to the fertile crescent and built
the sphinx ...
I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal
I cannot be comprehended except by my permission
I mean...I...can fly
like a bird in the sky... Ego Tripping

  • I am often asked if there is anyone I haven’t interviewed that I wish I could. I say “no” because I assume they mean people who are living. I was a child when Dr. King was killed so obviously I couldn’t have interviewed him, but he would be the one. However, over the years I have interviewed a number of people who were inspired and influenced by King including two of his closets soldiers. I have spoken to each of these men about what King meant to them and how King shaped their lives. #andrewyoung @revjjackson #desmondtutu #nelsonmandela @barackobama

  • Yesterday I was blessed to meet Ambassador Andrew Young. He was the first black mayor of Atlanta and the top Lieutenant to Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. I’m glad I was able to tell him thank you for all the work he has done and is still doing for us.

  • Getting the chance to be part of history can come and go in an instant. Getting the chance to meet someone whose work laid the foundation for the freedoms that you now enjoy...someone who helped paved the way for someone like you to exist...rarer still. .

I was nervous to approach him and wanted to give him space as reverence, but instead he hugged me (!!!), and shared memories of his time in Nigeria. It’s the second time in my life that someone notable has pulled me in close and spoken to me like they were chatting with a kindred spirit. When I asked him how does someone set themselves up to do something notable in history, his response was “find the thing that people do not want to do, and do it. Find the gap, and fill it.” .

This experience was truly an honor. #BeAKing #AndrewYoung #LifeAtEtsy

  • This afternoon I had the distinct privilege and honor of meeting Ambassador Andrew Young following a panel discussion with Dr. Raphael Bostic and Dr. Tennison.⠀
⠀
I was truly overwhelmed by the inspiring words of wisdom these activists and scholars shared with the attendees in the @andrewyoungschool.⠀
⠀
The topic was Disruption and Opportunity: Shaping Policy in a Digital World. I was intrigued by Ambassador Young’s ability to connect the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement and the disparities that existed then to the current Civil Rights and women’s struggles as they pertain to modern technology. I was equally inspired by Dr. Bostic’s call for involvement and innovation from students and the like who brainstorm ways to affect change utilizing technology to uplift the community of Atlanta, closing the canyon of access.⠀
⠀
I am excited about my journey as a Master of Public Administration student at @georgiastateuniversity and look forward to being a true advocate and changemaker for the City of Atlanta and beyond!⠀
⠀
Thank you to everyone who made this event happen. Your efforts are not lost on me as a student and dreamer!⠀

  • Father: There is nothing out there for you trust me on this.
Son: Something must be there cos my mind is always there.
Father: Son,the only thing out there are fear, pains, failure, regret and much sorrow.
Son: Dad, what is here for you that make you camp here all this while? Better to embrace those things out there than live to end up as you dad. Nothing is here for me dad. All that's here is for you dad, mine is where the fear, pains, failure are.

  • On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at the age of 39 on the second-floor balcony at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis at 6:01 p.m. CST. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he died at 7:05 p.m. He was a husband, father, HBCU graduate, prominent leader of the Civil Rights Movement and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Dr. King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, days leading up to his assassination. Andrew young jr., American politician, diplomat, activist and close friend recalls the days leading up to that day:
.
. “He knew when he was going to Memphis he was going to his death. And he’d always said, you know, death is the ultimate democracy. Everybody’s going to die, and you don’t have anything to say about when you die or how you die or where you die. You can only choose what it is you give your life for.... And Martin has made his choice the day he devoted his life to the movement and liberation for people of color.” .
