Ed Hess, age 100, enjoys throwing back the occasional #rollingrock at his local #VFW . Seventy- five years ago he was part of an assault in the vicinity of Monte Cassino when a German artillery shell killed half of his squad and buried him alive. He made it out with only a concussion.
Carl DiCiccio refused to sign my rifle. When I called him, he assumed I was a scam and hung up on me several times. I was really determined because Carl served with 135 INF REG, 34th Division, “The Red Bull’s” in Italy, where he earned the Silver Star in the same battle my grandfather’s brother was killed in on Sept 17th, 1944.
It wasn’t until I removed the upper hand guard of the rifle and mailed it to his home to prove my project wasn’t a farce. Figuring I would never see the piece of the rifle again, I was shocked to see it on my front porch after he mailed it back to me signed, with an apology.
Later on, I finally got to meet him and hear all about journey up the bloody boot of Italy, which included being buried alive at the Anzio beachhead for two days after an artillery shell hit his bunker.
While attacking German positions north of Barberino, Italy, Carl’s squad became pinned down by a German pillbox. As the sun went down, the men we’re still trapped because a German Officer continued to shoot flares exposing his squad. Carl took matters into his own hands by handing off his BAR, advancing through several meters of barbed wire, even after being wounded by mortar fire, to get close enough to the enemy’s position. Carl then raised to his knees firing a rifle grenade and “Took the German’s head right off.” Carl continued to lob grenades, some which bounced off the concrete pill box and rolled down the hill nearly wounding his own men. Carl was able to get 19 more Germans to surrender upon reaching the defensive position. He was awarded a Silver Star for his actions. By the time the war ended, he also would earn four Purple Hearts.
