Outstanding Scholars, Fine Athletes. This winning combination-excellence in both academics and athletics-is a goal many aspire to but only a few achieve.
Since 1981, the Army Reserve has presented the National Scholar/Athlete Award to selected students at more than 12,000 schools annually. The USAR continues this tradition because they think these students’ accomplishments deserve recognition and because they know how difficult it is to excel both academically and physically.
All high schools in the United States and American high schools overseas are eligible to participate. Any junior or senior who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in a VARSITY or INTRAMURAL sport while maintaining at least a B AVERAGE is eligible.
Scholar/Athletes are selected by their own high school administrators. The Army sends an official selection form to the school counselor. The counselor is encouraged to consult with the principal and athletic director to select the student(s) who will receive the awards. The award includes a certificate signed by the Chief of the Army Reserve and a bronze Olympic-style medallion (in the picture above).
THE RULES
Selection in no way incurs any obligation for the student or the school to the Army or Army Reserve, and it costs nothing to participate.
Official selection forms MUST BE POSTMARKED by 30 May, and should be submitted at least four weeks prior to the anticipated date of the award!
The selection form the school counselor receives in the mail or that was provided by the local Army or Army Reserve Recruiter is all that is needed to participate. The Recruiter will contact the school counselor to confirm the school’s participation and to arrange presentation.

  • Repost from @ssgellingsworth — Airborne. Jumpmaster. Freefall. Parachute demonstration. Skydiving.
The US Army Golden Knights parachute demonstration team live, eat and breathe adrenaline, and use their skills to spread the Army’s message. Working with them this last week was my second opportunity to observe these stellar NCOs and Officer, and yet again I came away impressed.
It takes a special kind of person to jump out of an aircraft. It takes a whole other level of professionalism to jump out of an aircraft strapped to a total stranger. It takes a Soldier to make even the most apprehensive person feel safe with that whole arrangement.
Go follow the Golden Knights on Social Media. You won’t regret it.

  • SPC Emery Larson @thecanadiankhaleesi 🇺🇸 13R Field Artillery Firefinder Radar Operator
Emery is currently stationed at Ft Bragg, NC. serving in the Army’s most decorated airborne artillery unit. She is also a graduate of the Army Airborne school, making her a paratrooper as well. Within the last year she has deployed to Afghanistan with 2-501 parachute infantry regiment.
Any leave days Emery can get, she spends traveling. Fortune has been good to this small town girl, as she’s done well investing in some real estate on the side.
She is also heavily involved in military outreach and non-profit work. She hopes to continue her service to her community after her upcoming ETS. Wishing you the best with everything Emery!

  • Soldiers, you have one chance to make it to the top🔝. One chance to make it fast, or make it slow. I chose to make it FAST! I came in the Army as a E-1 (PVT) in 2013. I chose to work hard first and party last - therefore I could have nice things in my mature ages. Cause let's face it, you're young with no rank - people know how much money you make (you don't make s#it literally), but they don't know how hard you work. I made E-5 (SGT) in exactly three years, and then E-6 (SSG) in four years and 8 months. HARD WORK ALWAYS PAYS OFF 🙌 💪

  • Hello!! I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. Followers come and go and I wanted to let y’all what I’m all about. ☺️ 1. I moved from Ohio to Florida in August 2015 to have a fresh start at life and wanted to leave my troubles involving alcohol behind.
2. I am a fitness fanatic. I grew up always wanting to ride my bike around my neighborhood looking for other kids who wanted to play. Whether it was basketball, football, baseball, I was all about it.
3. I love Spartan races. There’s something about going through a battle, obstacles standing in front of you to get through. Those races are very reminiscent of life in the sense that there will be obstacles in life that will stand in your way and it’s up to you whether you’re going to conquer them or you’re going to let them conquer you. 👊🏻 I’ve earned one #spartantrifecta last year and I’m looking for more.
4. The workouts and clean, dense nutrition that were introduced to me last January are a big reason why I can handle the rigorous courses that Spartan puts you through. They have improved my endurance, stamina, strength, belief in myself, and mindset no doubt!! 5. I was baptized in November of 2017 and committing my life to Jesus and dying to my old self has truly changed my life. I wouldn’t be the same person if I didn’t realize that Jesus already has claimed the victory over death and that I have nothing to fear about any longer except God Himself.
6. Lastly, I am a health and fitness coach and would love to help you out become more fit and get you comfortable in your own body. If we’re not comfortable in our own body, then we’re self-conscious all the time. And that is no way to live life.
Life is meant to be lived to the fullest!

  • Last week, the LA Battalion flew to Salt Lake City, Utah, with some of our incredible community partners. The intent was to get all of our guests strapped to Tandem Instructors from the Army Golden Knights Parachute Demonstration Team, but unfortunately the weather turned sour after only one rotation of jumpers, and stayed sour all week. Not to be discouraged, our VRS NCO SSG Ellingsworth and our A&PA Civilian Mr. Hogan took the opportunity to show our guests the sights of beautiful Salt Lake City.
The LA Battalion wants to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Army Golden Knights, the Los Angeles Rams Cheerleaders, Power 106, MAMBA Sports Academy, UCLA, Westlake High School, the City of El Monte, Mr. Blake Lewis, Jason Zwolinski, and Skydive Ogden! You all made last week an incredible experience!
