  • Comfort is comforting. But only for a short time period. We are wonders of the world whose very nature is to explore and discover more wonders of the world.⁣

Because I didn’t like the piece in yesterday’s post, I played it safer with this piece. I created a variation of a spiral cat doodle of mine. ⁣
⁣
This made me realize this: In art-making, I have choices.⁣
⁣
(1) I can stay on a relatively safe path in which I create paintings that are variations of my doodles: I can “draw” the drawing outline with paint on my paper and color in that drawing with paint. Or,⁣
⁣
(2) I can let the inspiration drawing inspire me to create a painting that doesn’t look like the inspiration drawing. This would mean me drawing some lines and shapes on the painting surface that I see in my inspiration drawing. ⁣
But, then, I stop looking at the inspiration drawing and only look at the marks on my painting surface and let those new marks influence the subsequent marks.⁣
⁣
With the safer approach (1), I miss out on creating a painting that I may LOVE. This is because when a painting is created out of a sense of spontaneity (e.g., (2)) instead of copying (e.g., (1)), the energy, risk-taking, and magic of the art-making process is captured in the physical painting itself. ⁣
⁣
Visually and energetically, I can look at a painting and see that I followed path (2) instead of path (1). Also, a painting with path (2) had a visual uniqueness to it.⁣
⁣
This painting followed path (1). And, honestly, the drawing is much cuter than the painting.⁣

This piece took me 28 minutes. This piece is part of my challenge to create a painting in 30 minutes or less. This painting is also part of my challenge to use each of my 33 Blick matte acrylic paints.⁣
