  • 1. Corrects Muscle Imbalances
SMR helps our muscles relax and at the same time provides optimal length-tension relationship, which helps avoid muscle restrictions when we perform an exercise, so it will give a positive feedback to our CNS.
•
2. Improves Joint Range of Motion
SMR can basically break the knots (which restrict our range of motion) in our muscles, which can help us use our full range of motion.
•
3. Relieves Muscle Soreness and Joint Stress
SMR speeds up recovery because of better blood circulation in the body.
•
4. Improves Neuromusclar Efficiency
SMR is good for blood circulation hence, it also provides better oxygenation in our muscles.
•
5. Relaxes our Muscles
Foam rolling helps our muscles relax by activation of sensory receptors connecting our muscle fibers to our tendons.

6. Provides Optimal Length-Tension relationships
According to Joe Hashey,CSCS, foam rolling lengthens your muscles and breaks up adhesion and scar tissues.

  • Hopefully this does the trick 🤞🏼
•
For nearly 18 months I’ve been battling with a knee issue. It’s made running and cycling pretty unpleasant and there’s been some incredibly tough moments where I’ve considered chucking the sport in all together. I’m finally happy to have had it diagnosed and hopefully fixed. The procedure was a pretty simple one so I shouldn’t be out of the game for too long - but maybe go easy on me when I’m easing back into it at the start of the season 🙏🏼

  • i feel like i finally found myself today

the past several years i have been go-go-go, thrown into the modern world of stress and success. i lost who i was, I became ungrounded.
today i remembered who i was when i took time to just slow down and breathe. really listen to my body and let go of the worries and thoughts that consume my mind. to meditate and send my energy to healing my body.

yes i have a stress reaction in my foot. but i see this as a reaction to the stress of my life, not from solely running. resting my foot never helped it, but i think calming my being and truly believing i will heal is what will ultimately get me back on my feet again.
maybe it sounds silly, but this is the most hopeful i’ve felt in a long time. i will heal and i will stop the cycle of self-sabotage. my body will heal once my mind is mentally ready to take on life again. when it is cleansed of negativity and pressure, and is a lighter weight on my shoulders. and when i’m back, and stronger than ever, i will remember to give back and help others fight their battles.

  • Thank you to all the Friends and Family that made playing for the Bandits this summer a great experience! 🙏🏻 @fvbandits.cebl
.
It is such a unique experience playing in your home city. You just care so much more about the whole process! That being said 2020 season I’m looking forward to not just helping bring an Elite team.. but also a few more opportunities to this city!
.
Excited for how this league will develop and the level of talent that will rep Abby next year!

I put together a few highlights from the summer. Link is in the bio 🎥

  • Someone who isn’t scared to put in the work, and then show others how they can do it. This week’s featured athlete, Wes Sowell.
.
But seriously, Wes is no stranger to hard work. As you can tell by the photo, he does some pretty intense workouts and is consistent as you can be with them. You can catch him over at Lifetime putting in work, and having a good time while doing it. Thank you for representing us while doing what you do, Wes! Keep being you!
.
For you’re chance to be a featured athlete, post a picture of yourself, tag us in it, wear your shirt, tell us your story, or even show us something cool you’ve done. You can also send us your picture directly.

  • It’s hard for a lot of D1 collegiate athletes, or any true athlete to reidentify who they are when they decide to leave the sport they’ve loved - whether by choice or injury. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Under no circumstances should anyone else say it was an easy decision, or that they left the team high and dry. Because that is 1000% BS. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s the hardest decision ever made. When an athlete is left unsupported the grieving process they go through is even worse. If not careful the downward spiral could consume them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I know the consumption and downward spiral. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m here to tell all my athlete friends, allow yourself the space. Who you become after while still maintaining the athletic edge makes ALL the difference. You will have struggles re-identifying at first but it will happen. Maybe not overnight. But it will come. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Can you be counted on by your coaches and teammates? It doesn’t matter how talented you are if you’re not available to play.
.
Here are ways to be available:
.
1. As an athletes, your body is your most important asset so take care of it. Drink water, eat healthy foods, stretch, exercise, recover, and rest. Stay in shape and always be ready to compete.
.
2. Handle your business in the classroom. What good is it to have amazing talent if you’re not eligible to play. Hit the books, pay attention in class, and get the necessary help you need to make the grade.
.
3. Make good decisions. Too many of you miss or are late for parachute because of detention or suspension from school. This is completely unacceptable. Respect your teachers and administrators. Be a leader and stay out of trouble.

  • A 5 part series informational series on hormones! We are talking about hormones this week. And I’m breaking it down into 5 separate posts, so make sure you check back each day to get the next part of the series!

First - let’s talk about a different approach to treatment:

Not all hormone imbalances are the same. And really - every person is different making every condition or disease different. Which means - treatment is different depending on your history, your symptoms/presentation, and also - what you are willing to do/change.

There are many times that patients come in and we go through their timeline and history and what I thought we were maybe going to start with (because we have already met for a consultation and I have a general idea of what’s going on) for treatment goes completely out the window and we go an entirely different direction. Happens all the time. Because patients always give me their symptoms, but it isn’t until we start digging that I find out you were in a car accident, or multiple accidents, or you spent tons of time in the hospital, or were exposed to a lot of toxins from your job or a lot of medications.

It’s so important that you and your doctor spend time digging through everything because it can greatly influence treatment and outcome.

This is also why it’s important to TEST - don’t just guess. I know labs are expensive, but seriously - it saves us both time and we actually see what we need to do. Get the test done. Don’t waste time guessing.

Now Hormones:

Taking a functional approach to hormone imbalance means improving your body’s ability to create, regulate and balance hormones.

Exogenous hormones are necessary in many cases - like if there’s physical damage or lesions to the organ, but there are still other cases where many patients can benefit from a functional approach.

Over the next few days we are going to talk about: 📚 Essential fatty acids and Blood Sugar
📚 What your liver has to do with your hormones
📚 Getting your gut microbiome in check
📚 Toxins & low grade infections
📚 Stress & Nutrition Imbalances

Tune in tomorrow to learn what fatty acids and blood sugar metabolism have to do with your hormones!

  • Yesterday I Leveled up to 31 years of age.
.
.
I want to take pause to recognize all of the accomplishments 30 brought. - Completed Level Up Initiative mentorship program
- Lived in Africa for 2 months and worked as a student PT providing care to children in need as well as helping to enrich the community by assisting at the College of Malawi PT program.
- Completed 2 more internships in ICU and Sports Medicine
- Went on a safari! - Traveled to Mozambique, South Africa, Malawi, Boston, Atlanta, JAX, Lafayette, Boulder, Vegas, San Francisco, Manchester, NOLA, and other places I’m probably forgetting about.
- Completed my Doctorate of Physical Therapy program (I’m a Dr., y’all!!!!)
- Climbed 2, 14,000 ft mountains (Gray’s and Torrey’s)
- Competed in 2 KB Sport competitions receiving CMS both times .
.
Ageing doesn’t have to be a negative thing. I leveled up my life in so many different ways this year. I’ve opened my world view, created friends across the world, lived an active/healthy lifestyle, enriched my relationships, and am able to start a career in a field I have immense passion for. Live a life you love. Create a life you don’t need a vacation from. It feels pretty damn good over here.
.
.
Here’s to an amazing 31st year of life and more wisdom as I age. .
.
Thank you to all of the humans who I call friends and family, I couldn’t do this without you. Huge thanks to @devin_strength who rang in my 31st with me on top of some pretty dank mountains. ❤️❤️❤️

  • Let’s chat about mantras! ⁣
⁣
Who has them Who uses them? If so, what are they? (Psss....mantras are stories you tell yourself, fyi.)⁣
⁣
Recently, I was catching up with a friend and got on the topic of money mantras. What I use, or get to start telling myself again, and what she could come up with for herself. ⁣
⁣
THEN I went to who a person I call my alignment coach because she is amazing at supporting me in bringing my body into alignment. #healthgoals Anyways, at my appointment she was talking to me about changing my “I wants” list to my “I haves” list. (Aka how to manifest things into your life because the brain only knows what you tell it.) ⁣
⁣
Both of these convos got me thinking about what mantras I am telling myself that are not working for me anymore and what stories am I telling myself that are holding me back. ⁣
⁣
Since the brain only knows what we tell it then why do I tell myself the most epic story. Also, the brain does not know whether or not you have let’s say a $1 million in your bank account unless you tell it. And a crazy thing happens when you act as if you do and tell yourself that you do then the brain finds ways to make it happen much sooner than you think. It is the magic sauce for manifesting anything you want or don't want in your life. ⁣
⁣
Anything, even thinking about the possibility of encountering a snake on your hike. Which I did on Sunday and freak the $&@? out. Snakes and I are currently learning how to co-exist with each other. ⁣
⁣
My point is the mantras and stories you tell yourself create your life. So why not tell yourself the most epic mind-blowing story ever. Oscar-worthy level epicness. ⁣
⁣
So what mantra or mantras are you choosing telling yourself everyday to bravely live the life of your dreams?! As in starting right now. ⁣
⁣
(I really do want to know here because one you will most likely inspire the heck out of me and two who knows who else you will inspire. Oprah...maybe.)

Anything, even thinking about the possibility of encountering a snake on your hike. Which I did on Sunday and freak the [email protected]? out. Snakes and I are currently learning how to co-exist with each other. ⁣

My point is the mantras and stories you tell yourself create your life. So why not tell yourself the most epic mind-blowing story ever. Oscar-worthy level epicness. ⁣

So what mantra or mantras are you choosing telling yourself everyday to bravely live the life of your dreams?! As in starting right now. ⁣

(I really do want to know here because one you will most likely inspire the heck out of me and two who knows who else you will inspire. Oprah...maybe.)

  • Wish this was my view today. Two more weeks until we’re back in the sun surrounded by my favourite... palm trees! 🌴 ... This also means pool time. ⠀
⠀
I used to dread putting on my 👙 but this will be the first trip we’ve taken since I started my fitness journey and I can honestly say that even though I’m still not where I want to be, I finally feel confident enough to rock a swimsuit and feel good doing it! ⠀
⠀
Time to put in the work! 👇🏻⠀
⠀
Tuesday’s workout: started with back/biceps w/ @joelfreemanfitness and finished it off with 30 minutes of total body cardio w/ @autumncalabrese = one hell of a burn 🔥 ⠀
