  • #Sleeping - a major component of our lives which is slowly losing the importance it deserves & hence affecting our health slowly but decisively. Both the duration and the quality of sleep of humans has been affected over the years due to various factors in their lifestyle. Let 's first understand what are the parameters of good Duration & Quality of sleep are.

# Duration of good sleep: Sleeping hours requirements do differ as per the age of people. However, the average sleep duration of an adult should be between 7 - 9 hours daily.

# Quality of good sleep: The key indicators of a good quality sleep are:

a) Sleeping for more time while in bed (at least 85% of  total bed time),
b) Falling asleep in 30 mins or less of getting into the bed,
c) Waking up no more than once in a night,
d) Being awake for not more than 20 mins or less after initially falling asleep.

Both the above parameters are key determinants of whether one is getting a good quality sleep for required duration of time. 
## What happens if you are not sleeping enough or not sleeping well enough?

In today's stressful & demanding times, most people are sleep deprived. Either, they don't sleep enough or they don't sleep well enough. Over a period of time, these habits affect their lives in a number of ways. Read on to learn how it affects our lives:

# Lack of sleep affects the immune system: Sleeping less affects the production of Cytokines in the body. Cytokines are a type of protein produced by the body which protects it from external infections & inflammations by creating an immune response. Less Cytokines production makes the body a sitting duck to a series of inflammations and infections 
# Even short term sleep deprivation (< 48 hours) without sleep can affect the cognitive functions of humans.Sleep loss alters normal functioning of attention and disrupts the ability to focus on environmental sensory input. This basically means it affects our senses to the environmental factors like senses of vision, smell, hearing, tasting, etc.
