  • I photographed this mass of king penguins on South Georgia on my way down to Antarctica. It was quite a sight. I climbed a hill to get an elevated perspective because only with this kind of angle could I convey the incredible number of birds. The brown penguins are immature juveniles. I used a moderately small lens aperture because the back of the camera (i.e. the plane of the digital sensor) was oblique to the plane of the birds as I angled the camera downward. With a telephoto lens, I was afraid of having less than complete depth of field. In a picture like this, the last thing you'd want is for the foreground or background to be soft -- even a little. That would totally ruin the photograph. My settings were 1/100, f/13, and 400 ISO. I took this with a 70-200mm telephoto.

Proud to be working with award-winning documentary @forthebirdsdoc, directed by friend and fellow vegan @richardmiron, which has been booked for weeklong theater runs in both New York and Los Angeles!📍

Hailed as “riveting,” “captivating” and “profound,” this surprising and empathetic film — deemed a must-see by @nymag / @vulture chief film critic David Edelstein — follows a woman named Kathy who lives in the Hudson Valley with 200 pet ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys. 🐔 What starts as a story seemingly about Kathy’s battle with local animal advocacy groups transforms into an intimate drama about her relationship with her husband Gary and the toll the birds take on their marriage and her well-being. 🎭 Filmed over the course of five years, this sensitive tale of one woman’s world breaking down — poignant and absorbing in equal measure — is ultimately one of hope about the possibility of reclaiming one’s life. 🙏
.
So there’s that. ❤️ Having seen FTB, I can genuinely attest to how powerfully moving it is. 🙌 Whatever you do, don’t miss this super special piece of cinematic magic unfold during its limited theatrical engagements.🙅‍♀️ Repost @nellalknyc .

  • Up on the blog today, are another set of pretty cards, this time featuring a new bird stamp set and an awesome branch one as well! Both will be available this Friday at @the_greetery!

Pop over to my blog for all the details on how I made these cards, and a few stamping tips for you as well. And don’t forget to comment while you’re there, to be entered in today’s $50 @the_greetery gift certificate drawing!

Side note: Did you notice the lemons here, from the Lemon Blossom set I showed you yesterday? I used it to make my own lemon tree!🍋
•
One other thing to note....it’s already a well-known fact that I’m a bit of a plant lady (we’ll leave off the crazy part!). But I think it’s safe to say that “bird lady” is probably in my future as well. 🤣 You should have seen me the other night when we were sitting on our deck and a hummingbird flew right up to one of the flower boxes on our deck rail! My actual face:😍 And again yesterday, at the arboretum (I tried to tell you about the arboretum in my Stories but Instagram ate a couple of my slides 🙄).....a tiny little gold finch flew right in front of us and landed on a flower. On a FLOWER. That is one light weight bird that can sit on a flower and not pull it down! 😳 I was mesmerized. Lol!

I’m just giving you fair warning in case you’re in it with me here for the long haul and I start taking you on bird watches with me or whatever it is that crazy bird ladies do! Lol!

One more thing! There’s a fun poll happening in my Stories....you can settle a debate between Bartley and me!! He thinks he’s gonna win this one but I’m not betting on it! Go cast your vote and tell us what you think! (And whose side you’re on!)😂

Have a great day, Friends! 😘

  • Swipe for more images!! Such luck!! My son discovered baby Bluejays on the front lawn! When I'm not designing I'm usually tending to something living in or around my house, so my son came and got me. I have a little bird sanctuary between the house and two lovely trees where I keep 9 different feeders with a variety of bird foods and a birdbath. The birds have been coming for 3 years now, so naturally they breed nearby. These cuties were huddling under an old Ash tree attracting a lot of attention with their food calls, no parent in sight. 🤔 The slightly more mature one flew about 5 feet above the grass to nearby Arborvitaes, the perfect housing trees for smaller birds like the Sparrows and Housefinches, but feral cats sleep right under them!! 😳😱 The exposed baby of the babies hopped through the borders to eventually climb up a Weeping Cedar and take a rest. These 2 were calling out for food and communicating with each other!! A few hours later I spotted them reunited by the Boxwood shrubs, the perfect spot for me, not so safe for them! I was able to sneak around the backside and lean over the shrubs. All they saw was my head, hands and a phone, and didn't seem to care. They carried on doing their thing, which was squaking: "feed me!". Then they ventured into the long backyard! I was truly worried that Earl or ZiZi (my feral daily cat visitors) would spot these tasty morsels... I kept an eye on them till they were out of sight. Please swipe to see them flapping their wings in the hopes to get fed. The adult birds take entire peanuts from my little red collander. So fun to watch!!
