Have you ever seen someone lauded as a great leader based solely on their charisma? I recently had this discussion with a friend; and while charisma can be an added characteristic to enhance someone’s leadership skills, it is not a defining factor. A leader is defined by how they behave – how do they react to issues, how do they communicate, how do they lift up their followers, how do they guide others, how do they provide focus, what actions are they taking, how do they display their competencies? . . . . .
It is very possible to be a charismatic fool. This is the person who is well liked and fun to be around, but when you take a closer look, they don’t really do much in the way of guiding their team. They may lack subject matter expertise and overcompensate by being the big personality in the room. It is great that they are well liked, but that only goes so far and generally creates an inefficient and stagnate team. . . . . .
Don’t be this person! Take time to reflect, seek feedback, and then govern yourself accordingly. You have the power and resources to grow your leadership skills. Don’t be trash! . . . . . . . .
Proud to present @toureshow x Dr. Melina Abdullah “I Am The Lion of BLM.” @docmellymel is a truly inspiring warrior. She is the LAPD’s fiercest public critic and they recently arrested her for touching a cop and she faced a year in prison, very scary. The charges were dropped and here she discusses how LAPD mistreated her while she was in custody and how she felt both fear and resolve and she fought through. She was also there at BLM’s first meeting called by Patrisse Cullors @osopepatrisse that was intended to launch a movement not a moment. She tells the story of that first meeting. Dr. Abdullah is also a mother of three and a mother figure to many. She’s a professor and a department chair and she’s that woman who you fall in love with and want to be your second mom. She tells the story of how she trains her kids to stand up to LAPD and the time when she watched her youngest confront an officer while they were occupying LAPD HQ. Dr. Abdullah is so inspiring. I hope you love this convo. Link in @toureshow bio. Let me know what you think of this ep in the comments below.

You can see the stress all over my chipmunk face! I remember working so hard for everyone else and hoping that I would have a magic release or payoff as reward for killing myself day in and day out. I earned $ and promotion, but damn, I was miserable.
Then I see myself now...happy, enjoying life, comfortable in my body. Soooo happy I made one BIG decision a few years ago.
The decision wasn't to diet or change my hair or even to leave my jobs (although all 3 happened eventually), it was the decision that I was important and the best way for me to be the butt kicking, high performing woman I wanted to be was to put ME first.
From there life decision got much easier because my priorities were aligned.
If you are lamenting about your weight or a crappy job or your low energy, those are just symptoms! Make the decision to prioritize YOU and believe me, it flows from there.

I spent all of last Friday thinking it was Thursday. I even uploaded my IG post with the caption “neon Thursday” because I was sure that was what day it was. It wasn’t until the next day that I realized my mistake and updated my caption as well as well my mental calendar. My youngest is 4 years old and I can’t use “mommy brain” as an excuse. So what’s the moral of this story? Stay hydrated, get plenty of sleep, and when you want to include days of the week in your IG caption, check the calendar, just in case! *
