  • Dog of Fo

Foo Dogs are mythical, lion-like creatures.

They symbolise prosperity, success, and guardianship.

They always come in pairs — a male and female.
The female represents yin, and the male represents yang.
The female Foo Dog protects the inhabitants. And the male watches over property and structures.
You can identify the gender of the Foo Dog by what is under its paw.
The male holds a small ball which represents the world.
The female keeps watch over a cub or puppy to represent life and nature.
Authentic Foo Dogs are in pairs with one having an open mouth and the other closed.
It represents the in-and-out breathing of life and the sound of “om.” Originating in Hinduism and adopted by Buddhism.

It's described as the sound of the vibration of the universe.
If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think energy, frequency and vibration. The very foundations of our universe, of matter and thought, appear to lie in sound vibration. Nikola Tesla

But foo Dogs are not actually dogs they are in fact lions.
How then, did they come to be dogs?

India is the surest place to begin the lions’ path to east Asia, for it seems to have moved along with the Buddhist faith.

In those times, the lion was a symbolic protector of the dharma the teachings of Buddha.

Their first appearance in Chinese art was approximately 208 BC to about 221 AD.
Foo Dogs vanished for 400 years after their first appearance.
They later returned in the T'ang Dynasty that was in power from 618 to 917 AD.

In fact, you can see some variation on these creatures in.

Korea, Myanmar, Tibet, and other East Asian countries.

In Japan, they call them komainu, and in Okinawa they are shisa.

The name given to these guardians originates from China the Chinese word for Buddha is Fo or Fu.

which led to the original title – “Dog of Fo”.
