- QOTD : Do you read in English or other languages?
.
I really like reading in English even if I read more slowly and even if I don't understand all the words, I can understand the general meaning and follow the story without any problems. And then it helps me to improve my vocabulary ☺️
I plan to read a book in English before the end of the month because I haven't read one in a while

  • ✨🌿✨🌿✨🌿✨🌿✨🌿✨🌿✨ Hello everyone! It’s been a good minute since I’ve posted. But once again...I got sick. I lost my voice, felt way too ill to even think of making posts, and it became tiring. I want to start getting back into my creative rhythm again; start making photos that have such a fantasy element to them instead of showing off my collection in front of the bookshelves. But you all do seem to like these photos very much 😂 What’s something you wish to see more of? (I won’t be doing any cape photos too soon. It’s too damn cold to take outside photos right now and too wet). I’ve been scouring the internet for inspiration and I just want to start doing some professional photos like @thefairyhollow and @elizabethknight_ , who are my Queens 😭💕 What do you think?

#qotd: tell me a few things about yourself and I will pair you with a Middle-earth character 😁 ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

And yes...I did chop my hair 😂 ✧

Happy Monday y'all! I hope that everyone had a fabulous weekend. I finished CONVICTION by Denise Mina (@dam7337) yesterday and it was fantastic! ⁣
⁣
𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬: The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life explodes starts off like all the days before: packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true-crime podcast. Until her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone. Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own—a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually 𝘪𝘴 Anna's problem. She knows one of the victims from an earlier life, a life she's taken great pains to leave behind. And she is convinced that she knows what really happened. Then an unexpected visitor arrives on her front stoop, a meddling neighbor intervenes, and life as Anna knows it is well and truly over. The devils of her past are awakened—and in hot pursuit. Certain she has no other options, she goes on the run and in search of the truth, with a washed-up musician at her side and the podcast as her guide. ⁣
⁣
𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: OMG y'all! This book! I loved it. I had the hardest time putting it down to attend to everyday life activities. Anna is a badass! Fin (the washed-up musician) is so pathetic he becomes endearing. They both grow and overcome during their outrageous truth-seeking adventure. This book had me on the edge of my seat on more than one occasion. I can't go into more detail because I don't want to give anything away. Just pick up a copy of this book, I will be surprised if you regret it. ⁣
⁣
I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.⁣
⁣
If you have read this book, DM me, as I would love to chat about it! xoxo, Mel.⁣

DAY FIVE: BOOKMARK + FOREST STORIES⁣
⁣
I meant to post this so much earlier today, and then between a dentist appointment and work, time slipped away on me. But, better late than never!⁣
⁣
I absolutely love this metal bookmark from November’s box, which features a quote from UPROOTED and was designed by @herpaperworld. The illustration is so crisp, and I love the colours!⁣

💬 #QOTD: Metal, wood, paper, random things, or simply laying a book upside down... What’s your favourite way to mark your place when you have to set aside your current read?⁣
⁣⁣
I love bookmarks, and have dozens upon dozens of them...and yet I’m just as likely to keep reusing checkout slips from the library (even if it’s not a library book I’m reading). Thin woodmarks are probably my favourite overall, and I love when bookmarks have tassels!⁣

  • Happy Monday! .
.
It’s been busy but I promised I would finish arcs that I needed to finish before this year ends. Thank you to @netgalley for this ARC and happy pub day to ‘They’re Strictly Friends’ by Chloe Liese. 📚
.
.
This book is based on Lucas and Elodie. Two friends that swear to stay friends no matter what and never cross the line until something happens to Elodie that forces her to lean on Lucas and from there their relationship changes from friends to its complicated? Both with feelings for each other but both Elodie and Lucas are dealing with their own internal battles while trying to navigate their feelings for each other and defining their relationship. Their English and French banter is cute, funny, witty and their relationship is complex, dark at times but loving. Overall, it took a while for me to get into but it was a good read.

  • 📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚
10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World by Elif Shafak
The book is based on research that after we die some of our brain cells are still active for up to 10 minutes and 38 seconds. In this case a woman named Leila, a prostitute from Istanbul who is dead in a dumpster, spends those final moments having sensory memories and through that, telling her life’s story. It’s a book about love, friendship and the family that you create and how far you would go for them.
I was lucky enough to go to the Booker prize readings in London this year but this is the first I’ve read of the short list. Because of that I read the whole thing with the author’s voice in my head and the things she said that night that stuck with me (like how she writes listening to heavy metal!! 😂) It definitely put the book at the top of my tbr and I had very high expectations for this book and it did not disappoint! Istanbul came alive on the page. The characters, forgotten members of society most of the time, who’s lives are deemed to hard to think about, immigrants, sex workers, the abused and exploited, transgendered people, are shown as so much more than these labels. How friendships can save you when your family abandons or rejects you. This book is just.... ooo! Tears of sorrow and of joy will be shed! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

  • #BookReview I’ve just completed #TheWig by CharlesWright & wow... this was an amazing read by an exceptional writer. What happens when you alter your appearance in an attempt to gain privilege & a higher social status, but you do not achieve social mobility? What happens when you appear to have a high social status, but you aren’t so successful in your quest to gain financial wealth?
#

Charles Wright was so ahead of his time. Looking the past will only get you so far. Appearance has limits. How long can we “play the part” until our true selves show? And at what cost? 4.5 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

  • I bought this as a Christmas gift to myself as a reminder that being a writer is a gift, a privilege, and a passion. It’s also a job - a difficult one many times, so when I believe it is sacred, I can reset my mind when it goes to my whiny place and be re-inspired. Surround your work place with things that make you smile, think, ponder, and motivate. Put one of these on your list for the writers you love, including yourself. Do you have a favorite quote or object in your space? #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #writingcommunity #writingquotes #booklover #authorsofig #writinglife #writingspace

  • This is what happens when you literally judge a book by its cover: you walk through the airport and see a cute cover with a modern, interesting premise. Once you start reading, you feel committed. That's what happened to me. 📖
.
The book, called Ghosted by Rosie Walsh, isn't terrible. The premise is a guy and girl fall in love, spend seven amazing days together, and then he ghosts her. As anyone would, she assumes something has happened to him and he wasn't just playing her. So the entire book is an account (from both parties) on what really went down. It does sound kind of interesting, right? But instead of exploring the emotional complexity of romance and relationships, the plot turns out to be corny and over-the-top. 🤷‍♀️ .
.
Still, the writing is good and it's not hard to get through. I just found myself rolling my eyes a lot. That said, if you like to read anything you can get your hands on like me, this book is up for grabs. Just ignore the doggie chew marks in the corner. 🐶

  • "Ahora formas parte de La Cadena, Rachel. Ambas.

  • The festive season is upon us, and this means picking the right sorts of books to pack for your upcoming travels, curating a stack of books by your bedside table or picking the right book to gift a loved one.

If you’re a book lover, obsessed with Paris and looking for a straight up feel-good story, then I would definitely add ‘The Girl Who Reads on the Metro’ to your list.

Set in Paris, Juliette is a lover of books and often observes what people are reading as she commutes to work on the metro. The narratives of the people she encounters blended with the world of books lures her into a profession where she hand-picks books for people, which changes their lives.

This book will make you feel all the warm and fuzzies - it’s basically the reader equivalent of the Christmas movies I’m sure you’re all binging on Netflix at the moment!

  • REFLECTIONS – The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America, Thomas King
•
“No matter how you frame Native history, the one inescapable constant is that Native people in North America have lost much.”
•
This is the history I was never taught.
•
In The Inconvenient Indian, Thomas King (Cherokee) provides a harrowing account of how Indigenous people were treated by the white people who arrived in North America.
•
King starts out exploring how Indigenous people have been portrayed in the arts and media. His conversational tone makes the reading accessible. He explains the problem of using collective words (like Native or Indian) and teaches the reader to recognize and respect each Indigenous person’s Nation. These early sections draw the reader in and lay the groundwork for what is to come.
•
King then moves on to far more egregious acts: wildly unfair treatment by Canadian and U.S. governments, mass relocations of entire Nations, horrific treatment of children in residential schools, and treaties broken again and again and again. King spends much of the latter part of the book talking about land and treaties. Land represents sovereignty and self-determination and treaties that were supposed to be “forever” promises weren’t honoured but instead, were broken within a handful of years. These broken promises continue today.
•
The Inconvenient Indian was published in 2012. A lot has happened since then, but yet not nearly enough has been done. There’s a long way to go.
•
Yes, this is the history I was never taught but it is a history I am working to learn. I will make mistakes and so need to be self-reflective and open to receiving correction. Most importantly, I need to listen. For starters, up to now I have only read a handful of books by Indigenous authors. That needs to change.
•
On choosing to pay attention to something, we are more likely to do those things. So my main reading goal for next year is to read at least one Indigenous-authored book per month in 2020. See the third photo for my list in progress (most of these authors have multiple titles; these are just a start) and please recommend any you think I should add.

.
I'm feverishly working my way toward my goal of 75 books this year with 10 left to finish. Tonight I'm tearing through Winter Street by Elin Hildebrand and am falling in love with the Quinn family with every page!

Any Winter Street fans out there? ❄️
