Summary:
Brody Fair feels like nobody gets him: not his overworked parents, not his genius older brother, and definitely not the girls in the projects set on making his life miserable. Then he meets Nico, an art student who takes Brody to Everland, a “knock-off Narnia" that opens its door at 11:21pm each Thursday for Nico and his band of present-day misfits and miscreants.

Here Brody finds his tribe and a weekly respite from a world where he feels out of place. But when the doors to Everland begin to disappear, Brody is forced to make a decision: He can say goodbye to Everland and to Nico, or stay there and risk never seeing his family again.

  • Hey, hey You Guys! Happy #StackSaturday!!
.
.

If it hadn't been for @booksandponies bookclub on Facebook, I don't think I ever would have picked up Grace and Fury...but I am so glad that I did! It ended up being a fast-paced, fun, easy fantasy, and I am excited to continue!
.
.
Tell me a book that surprised you in a good way!
.
.
Rating: 💛💚💜💙
.
.
This, at its core, is a story of two sisters. Born in a world where women are extremely repressed and oppressed, Serina is the compliant one, training her whole life to become a Grace, one of the many female companions to The Superior and his Heir. But Nomi is the one of a rebellious and wild spirit. She believes in fighting-back, asking questions, and breaking the rules. .
.
Nomi's fire ends up causing problems for both sisters on more than one level as she finds herself chosen as Grace over Serina and Serina, after taking the blame for something Nomi did, finds herself banished to a harsh island where women have to fight for food. .
.
Desperate to rescue her sister, Nomi hatches a dangerous plot with Asa, the youngest child of the Superior. Meanwhile, Serina has to unlearn everything she has been tough about being the "ideal woman," and find her strength to survive.
.
.
As I mentioned, this book ended up being quite the surprise. I was invested in the story and I found the storylines of both sisters equally compelling and wanted to know how their stories would end.
.
.
This book would be a great stepping-stone for those who are wanting to dip their toes into fantasy. I would consider this "fantasy lite." It was very easy to read, fast-paced, and it did not get lost in the dense world building or numerous characters that many fantasies seemed to. For those who are more experienced fantasy readers, those aspects are likely to be a detriment to their reading experience since you are not told much about the world, and you get to know very few characters.
.
.
All in all, I really enjoyed this story an I am looking forward to continuing!

  • QOTD: are you partial to one word book titles? Two words? Maybe titles of the _____ of ______ and ______ variety? Or maybe something so long it requires an acronym like TLWTASAP (⬆️)? 😉

Happy Tuesday....is almost over? 😂 I swear I used to post every day at like 10am! At the latest like noon. Now it’s a miracle if I post before 7pm. Considering I’ve never really noticed any difference in my likes and comments I suppose it doesn’t really matter when I post. 😅 Do you find that posting at a specific time actually makes a difference? I feel like that is a holdover from before the dreaded algorithm set out to ruin all the fun. ☄️

Day 16 of April #bookreadhappyhour: Love is love is love

I really can’t think of a better series to post for this prompt. So much about these books is just love! Familial love, platonic love, romantic love, love in all its forms and with no judgement. If you are a fan of character driven books (there are absolutely plots in all of these books but the relationships between the characters is the focus), in a space opera setting, I highly recommend this series. The second book is actually my favorite but I love the series as a whole and really hope Becky Chambers gives us another book in this world!

  • Hello !

O to tady jde?

"We raise our heads to the sky as if the sea was a window and we were climbing out of it."
.
.
SYNOPSIS: Escaping her failing marriage, Grace has returned to Pondicherry to cremate her mother. Once there, she finds herself heir to an inheritance she could not have expected – a property on the beaches of Madras, and a sister she never knew she had: Lucia, who was born with Downs Syndrome and has spent her life in a residential facility. Grace sets up a new and precarious life along the coast of Madras, with Lucia, the village housekeeper Mallika, the drily witty Auntie Kavitha and an ever-multiplying litter of puppies. But Grace's attempts to play house prove first a struggle, then a strain, as she discovers the chaos, tenderness, fury and bewilderment of life with Lucia.
.
.
RATING: 4.75/5
It is quite evident that Doshi's mastery of poetry extends to prose as well. Small Days and Nights is a fascinatingly captivating read. Tishani builds a seamless bridge over troubled waters but the calm exterior masks relentless turbulence with small instants of stillness. There are passages of startling rawness and vitality which evoke vibrant emotions. Sections where Grace describes the roving, always staring eyes of the creepy men wherever she goes come to mind particularly. The life that Grace and Lucia, whose mutual love has a primal nature, lead in the village has a stark simplicity to it which gets highlighted when punctuated with sections set in Madras and Italy. It is different from Grace's volatile past when her family, which is rendered typical by its atypicalness, was together and Lucia's existence was a secret. The constant going back to the sea also juxtaposes nature's permanence against human temporality. There is also repeated callbacks to the darkness that resides in humans through the two mass dog-killing incidents in different parts of the novel or even the beating up to Valluvan by thugs. But Doshi somehow manages to balance the dark with the light, indifference with intimacy.

Et vous, plutôt Neuf où occasion ?

  • Book: In This Moment
Author: Karen Kingsbury
My Rating: 4 🌟
..
..
Everytime I pick up one of Karen Kingsbury’s books, I know it’s going to be absolutely amazing and I can’t wait to read it. She puts her heart and soul into writing about the Baxter Family and all of the characters have different personalities and it’s so amazing to read. I’ve only read about five other books by Karen Kingsbury, but I hope one that I’ll get to start at the very beginning of The Baxter Family tree. Karen Kingsbury, you have become one of my favorite authors. 💛 This book had me in the ropes about 30 pages in and I couldn’t put it down, turn on the classical music station and I was reading for hours. Wendell Quinn starts a voluntary bible study group after school talking about the word of God. Within the year, violence, gangs, pregnancies have gone down and test scores, attendance and success has gone up. Truly God has helped this school and changed very many people’s lives. Not everyone is able to see it and Wendell Quinn is being sued for holding this study group on school property. Luke Baxter was asked to represent and defend Wendell despite the overwhelming possibility of losing the case. With God’s help, nothing is impossible. A truly amazing story about our value of freedom to practice our own faiths. Can’t wait to see what else Karen Kingsbury has in store for me to read. :)

  • What would you do in the face of enormous loss?

It's 1993, the first Saturday in September—impossibly hot—and Claire Rawlings is driving her two girls to the daycare at the University of Chicago Hospital where as a resident, she is scheduled for rounds. Ignoring the troublesome signs of a sudden allergic reaction, Claire exits off the freeway to safety, only to pass out cold. When she wakes up, her daughters are gone.

Vanished.

LITTLE LOVELY THINGS is a haunting and prismatic exploration of how tragedy can transform lives. With lyrical prose and page-turning momentum, the story unfolds through the viewpoint of four characters: Claire, the devastated yet strong-willed mother; Moira, the transient who finds herself thrust into instant motherhood; soulful Jay, whose grisly discovery brings him to the center of the tragedy; and Andrea, the scrappy and wildly talented tomboy.

Traversing the landscape of loss, LITTLE LOVELY THINGS ties together the threads of lives shattered, hope lost, and—finally—joy restored.
.
💔 I won this book on @goodreads (Thank You!!) And I have a feeling it might break my little heart. 😬
Talk about your worst nightmare!
.
This picture is also my worst nightmare, and my least favorite I’ve ever taken, probably. Nothing went right, and I gave up on life and ate snacks instead. 😆

QOTD: Do you dive into books that you know might affect you deeply emotionally, or does it take a while?
.
I actually have been avoiding ALL feelings like the plague after the way REAL life kicked me around the past few years, HOWEVER... I’m proud to say, I’m finally starting to expand my genres a bit! (Baby Steps, like What About Bob. ⛵️)

  • I am about to commence reading my 100th book of 2019 and I am unable to contain my excitement because it is the latest in the St. Mary’s Chronicles by Jodi Taylor which was published this month! I only recently discovered this series but it has fast become a favourite. It is about a group of historians who research what really happened in the past in real time (time travel to you and me) only of course nothing every goes simply. These are the sort of books that rip out your heart, repair it several chapters later and then rip it out once more! They also reduce me to tears of laughter frequently- I mean what more can you want in a book!

  • Hello everyone! Finally, after an extended break from Instagram, I’m back and posting regularly 💙
•
So, I finished #murdertrending a little while ago, and I gave it 5 stars! It was such a thrilling book, it had me totally in love and on the edge of my seat. I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love (with Ethan and Nyles). Overall, it was an amazing read! I’m starting Satellite now, my first sci-fi in a while, so I’m excited! 😁
•
Random question: what’s the lowest rating you’ve ever given to a book, and why? 😬
•
Random answer: I gave Beasts Made of Night 3 stars originally, but after thinking about it, it was honestly a 2 star read for me. I didn’t enjoy it, the characters were okay, and I read it during a bad time in my life. It just wasn’t a memorable read for me, and I struggled to get through it 🤷‍♀️

#KronikOkur

  • Do you regret much in your life? I tend to feel that each decision I’ve made led me to where I am. I love this quote from The Pioneer: “‘I wish..." I start to say that I wish things were different. But if things were different, I might not be standing here in the crisp chill next to him. And I can't bring myself to regret that." The Pioneer by @california_b is packed with action and unexpected twists, an addictive page-turner that is perfect for fans of Illuminae and Defy the Stars!

  • Sometimes books are not meant for reviewing. Tonio is one of those books for me. It is a story written by a Dutch writer. It’s about his son who died in an accident, but more so it’s about his life. ✨
Do you ever struggle with reviewing certain books?

  • Ink and Bone is on my TBR for this year!
Have you read it?
•
•
When I was telling my Mom that I am rewatching some Marvel films before Endgame come out she told me that besides Captain Marvel, she hasn't seen any Marvel films...once I was assured she wasn't joking I hastily made plans to include her in my rewatch! It's been fun introducing her to this world!
So far we've watched Captain America:The First Avenger and Iron Man. Iron Man 2 tonight! We've got quite a lot to go! •

  • What makes the perfect second hand bookshop?
Here’s my criteria:-
1. A varied stock, reasonably priced and well organised
2. A friendly and knowledgeable bookseller
3. A quirky or historic building
4. Located in a pleasant town with good parking and cafes
*
*
The bookshop that I visited today gets top marks in all these categories. The Rutland Bookshop is in the small town of Uppingham in the beautiful county of Rutland. Edward, the owner, is the most charming of booksellers; I’ve met him now twice now and each time it has been a pleasure to talk with him.
*
*
I did buy rather a lot of books from him and I could have bought more! Apologies to Emma @forget_me_not_originals for not waiting to go there with her but I’m more than happy to visit there again soon!

Thank you @readerbound and @littlebrown for be free book
✝️
It’s a big day for my grandson. Despite the nasty break he sustained playing Rugby, he is determined to proceed with his confirmation in the Catholic church tonight. The orthopedic surgeon has immobilized his arm to help stabilize his clavicle until Monday when he undergoes surgery. I must admit, this kid is tougher then I thought. *heart swell

It was good. Actually beautiful in its own simple way. The storyline is smooth but the ending, literally the ending was something that left me in awe.
.
Beautiful Oblivion was the first, and maybe only book, where I reached the end and had to immediately re-read to finish because I didn’t want to lose the all-consuming, totally-in-love book feeling emoted by Jamie McGuire’s special characters and story.
.
In Beautiful Oblivion, Trenton & Cami, had a lot to live up to. At the end my first thought was WOW! I really didn’t expect that.
This is a story about family ties, good and bad, loving, truly madly deeply, and fate; what will be, will be, in whatever order it’s meant to happen!
.
There’s a lovely side story going on with her friend Raegan, I loved their girl friendship, and how it has a leading story of its own.
.
I loved the easy breezy style of Jamie McGuire. The way she writes is so engaging. It’s easy and beautiful on the mind and has characters that come to life on the page with ease and clarity.
.
I found I had a smile on my face and a warm feeling in my heart for almost the entire book. The drama and angst are pitch perfect and gave me all the butterflies and stomach sinking feelings that I needed to  continue reading this amazing read.
.
.
But there were times when, although the feelings felt authentic, I thought maybe the protagonist was being slightly over dramatic about her ‘worry’ but NO, by the end it all made complete and utter sense.
.
It was a good read, you must try.
.
.
I'll give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟

  • My first 5 star book of the year!
Ever since I read Sometimes I Lie, I instantly fell in love with Feeney's writing. She is just so amazing and is the master of twists!
Aimee is an actress and after having a fight with her husband, she comes home the next day and he is gone. Wallet and phone left at home, but no sign of him. The police suspect that she has something to do with it, but she doesn't really remember much. What happened?
I loved every second of it! I read it in two sitting and I finished it at 5 a.m because I could not stop reading and I wanted to know how it would end. It is told in two different timelines. One in 1988 in Essex, and one in 2017 in London. Both are linked somehow and the storytelling is so smooth.
It's so hard not fall in love with Feeney's characters. Aimee was full of secrets and everytime one was revealed, it was more shocking than the other. I don't know how Feeney does it, but she continues to succeed with her psychological thrillers.
Just like Sometimes I Lie, this one was psychological as well. It's very interesting to read books that are crazy because I always wonder how authors are able to get in that crazy mindset. I did not expect the final twist at all, and Feeney does it so well. We think we know what's going on and it seems very clear to us that this is what the twist is but nothing is as it seems.
Hooking until it's very last page, I Know Who You Are will keep you up at night flipping the pages and it is a novel that will keep you guessing until the very end. Another successful thriller from Feeney and I cannot wait to see what she whips up for us next!

Thank you to Flatiron Books for providing me with an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
