  • 3 full days ahead of me to do this ☝🏻, nap, & repeat. 🙌🏻 Happy Memorial Day weekend, friends!!! 🎉 •
Never have I ever been more ready for a long weekend. 😂 I just shared a little work update in my stories, but suffice it to say the last couple of weeks have been BUSY - wonderful, but busy, and I am so dang excited to catch up on my reading & hang out with friends and family over the long weekend!!!❤️ What’s on your to-read list this weekend?! •
MY to-read list is currently dominated by Søren Sveistrup’s THE CHESTNUT MAN, a Scandinavian crime novel releasing in September. I’ve had so little time to devote to reading it this week, I’m feeling a little out of sync with the story - I don’t think it’s anything to do with the book, just my own inability to devote quality time to reading this week!! SO as soon as I hit post on this, I’m going to stick my nose in that book & not re-emerge for QUITE a while. 😂🙌🏻 what I WILL say so far is that I’m loving the pacing of this story - I personally love a really hefty crime novel that you can sink your teeth into, and THE CHESTNUT MAN delivers on that front so far. 👌🏻 It’s got a relatively slow-burning pacing (which is often a hallmark of Nordic Noir novels), BUT the author balances that with short chapters, which I also love cause you feel like you’re making progress. 🤓 It’s an interesting balance - slow burn with short chapters sounds kinda odd, but basically think of it this way: each chapter is very focused, so not a lot *happens* in each chapter but it all adds up to a compelling big picture. It’s working for me so far, and I can’t wait to see where it goes! •

  • [#partner with @torteen] Happy Thursday everyone! I’m procrastinating a little and sharing a new read in my robe! This one is called HAPPILY AND MADLY by @lex_bass. Here’s more about the book:
.
The summer before that fateful birthday, Maris is in the wealthy beach town of Cross Cove with her estranged father and his new family--and the infamous Duvals. Since the youngest member of the Duval family, Edison, is back from college and back in the arms of Maris's new stepsister, her summer looks to be a long string of lazy days on the Duval's lush beach.
.
But Edison is hiding something. And the more Maris learns about him, the more she's given signs that she should stay as far away from him as possible. As wrong as it is, Maris is drawn to him. Around Edison, she feels truly alive and she's not willing to give that up. Even if it means a collision course with destiny.
.
This sounds like such a good book combining thriller with a creepy love story so I might pick this up soon. What do you think?
.
I’m also partnering with @torteen to giveaway a finished copy of this book. Here’s how to enter:
😄 follow me, @torteen, @lex_bass and @storygramtours 😡 tag a friend you think will be interested

  • {#gifted📖 @epicreads} 🎤 I sat down this morning to read a little of LET ME HEAR A RHYME, and ended up reading 100 pages in one sitting.
.
Honestly, I should have expected that though. I read ALLEGEDLY 2 years ago, and MONDAY’S NOT COMING 1 year ago, and it was the same thing. Tiffany D. Jackson knows how to write such a suspenseful plot, and her teen characters seem so real, it feels like you know them IRL.
.
LMHAR is about three teens in 1997-8 Brooklyn who are determined to make their murdered friend a rap star by pretending he’s still alive, while trying to solve the mystery of his murder. There are some great lyrics written by Malik-16, and I bet the audiobook is going to be fantastic.
.
The author asked folks on this book tour to talk about some of our favorite hip hop artists and songs, but I have a whole favorite radio station. There’s a nonprofit radio station in my hometown that plays local rappers and musicians and puts on community events. They even had an educational program about how to caucus (this is Iowa, after all!). My favorite feeling is arriving into town and knowing that when I turn the dial, the sounds of my hometown will be there 🎶
.
Do you love the classics like Biggie? Is there a thriving local music station in your city?

  • ☕️ Oh, s'ht, my backpack is gonna be so heavy for the next days, but it's gonna be so worth it!
⁣
“Of all the great Russian writers of the first part of the nineteenth century—Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol, Herzen, Turgenev, Tolstoy, Nekrasov—Dostoyevsky was the only one who did not come from a family belonging to the landed gentry.”¹
⁣
DO YOU READ BIOGRAPHIES?
⁣
I couldn't resist it. It's no news for anyone who follows me long enough that I lost my heart to Russian Literature last year, although Dostoyevsky has been one of my favorite writers long before I even had this feed or reading projects in my life.
⁣
Then I saw this book in Tatiana Feltrin's feed (@tatianafeltrin), she's an incredible reader and her YouTube channel is just the best, in my opinion. She posted this book more than once, and I had to check it out... It's Dostoyevsky's biography written by Joseph Frank. 1095 pages long, published in Portuguese by @companhiadasletras, and now, my friend for the next I-have-no-ideia days.
⁣
There's something really important for me as a writer and as a reader. It's just not enough to admire authors and read all their works. Knowing about how he or she lived, where all his or her words and feelings came from is paramount to consolidate why I love them so much. However, I only did that once. With Machado de Assis, who was brilliant. I read all his work and at least two biographies about him. He's my favorite author of all times.
⁣
Here goes Dostô! Oh, and HAPPY #GEEKPRIDEDAY! 😂

  • "Çocukken, büyücülerin her şeyi yapabileceklerini sanıyordun.

  • From a Low and Quiet Sea by Donal Ryan is a short novel in which three seemingly disparate characters -Farouk, Lampy and John- are given a voice to tell their story. I think it’s one novella to savour as you get to know each of the characters and their lives, and Ryan was able to give each of his characters a distinct voice. Exploring themes of loss and grief throughout, this is a relatively short novel that packs an emotional punch, and it is one that will stay with me for some time to come. Especially Syrian refugee Farouk's story affected me very deeply...

  • As it’s possible I will never tire of saying (sorry), there are few things more guaranteed to work my nerves than books coming garlanded with descriptions that try to make them sound like the second coming. I mean, if you’re going to compare a book to The Secret History/the Handmaids Tale/Angela Carter/Flaubert you better be mighty sure it can bear the weight. More than one book I’ve read recently - all of which were perfectly enjoyable - were crushed by the weight of these bonkers comparisons. SO when I received the proof of The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone and saw the words “Virgin Suicides” and “Picnic at Hanging Rock” (both in my all time top 100, if not top 50) I almost gave up before I’d started. I’m so glad I didn’t.
Set between the present day and the arid summer of 1992 in a suburban Australian bordering the bush, it’s told by Tikka - then a schoolgirl, now a microbiologist who is obsessed with finding out what happened to the sisters - Hannah, Cordelia and Ruth - who were her childhood friends. The girls all vanished one hot summer night. Were they taken? Did they run away? What did their religious nut of a dad have to do with it? Why did so many people see something and say nothing? And why did only one of them come back? The Van Apfel Girls... is haunting, cloying, unsettling, claustrophobic, like a fleeting glimpse of something seen out of the corner of your eye but not really there at all. But it’s also, weirdly, funny, with the kind of detail that makes you snort even as the hairs on the back of your neck are standing on end; A bit like drinking too much wine on a hot summers day, falling asleep on the grass and waking up disoriented at dusk, fully cognisant that everything is, well, just a bit off. (Out on kindle now, published in hardback 6 June.) #bookstagram #books #thriller #booksandcoffee #weekendreads #saturdayreview #killerwomen #vanapfelgirls
