When trying to increase a certain movement at a joint, you always want to stretch the muscles that oppose that movement. So if we are trying to increase our dorsiflexion we will stretch the muscles that do plantar flexion.
.

The prime movers of plantar flexion are the calves, and we can split the calves into two parts.
.
.
1️⃣ Gastrocnemius: the gastroscs are the most prominent visible muscle belly that most people associate with the calves.
.
.
2️⃣Soleus: the soleus lays deep to the calves and is much less prominent and visible to the eye.
.
.
Both of these muscles play a large role in restricting dorsiflexion if they are tight. We want to target each muscle separately.
.
.
🔹Keeping the knee straight will target the gastrocnemius and you will typically feel the stretch higher on the leg
.
.
🔹Bending the knee will target the soleus and you will typically feel the stretch lower on the leg
.
.
