  • Raising the roof at Moseley Road Baths

Thanks to partnership working between community groups, national and international organisations and Birmingham City Council, the Gala Pool roof at Moseley Road Baths has been repaired.

Historic England has so far grant aided £707,000, one of its largest grants to a project in the Midlands, to ensure the roof is safe and secure, preventing any further weather-related damage to the pool area, which closed in 2003. After a year of specialist repair work, the stunning Edwardian architecture takes centre stage again and the Gala Pool is now able to play an important role as an arts and culture venue while its long-term future is decided.

With the roof repairs complete work can take place on restoring other elements of the Gala Pool’s deteriorated infrastructure, including the balcony area. This will sit alongside on-going repairs and maintenance of the rest of this magnificent building. Moseley Road Baths are the oldest of only five Grade II* listed swimming baths operating in Britain and an iconic element of this part of Birmingham. They are the only baths in the country built before 1914 to have continuously hosted swimming since they opened. The smaller pool, now operated by the community formed group the Moseley Road Baths CIO, is open for public swimming.

  • “There is beauty in simplicity”

Had the afternoon children free today. Didn’t have any plans. I’m the kind of person who can’t stand sitting in the house all day. I need to get out everyday, whatever the weather, even if it’s just for a little while.
Anyway decided to take a drive locally today. Sometimes it’s nice to just jump in the car and have a drive around.
We went to look at a local spot that floods (cars have got stuck in the past here and carried away)
Continued in next grid post..... #getout #driving #water #laughing #shitsandsgiggles #simplethings #simplicity

  • Fabulous first rehearsal for The Crescent’s production of Wizard of Oz. 🌈 👠

I’ll be doing plenty of singing as a singing tree 🌳 (a trio of women singing in the Tin Man’s song) and member of the ensemble! So happy I’m part of this show with a such a talented cast and crew!

You can get tickets from The Crescent Theatre website if you’re interested!

And for your viewing pleasure, a picture of me as a tree when Ciaran and I visited a museum in York a number of years ago. (Excuse the poor quality)

  • Our students are always eager to get speaking Arabic. Thing is, speaking is quite often a tricky area to practice, especially if you’re not in an Arabic-speaking country. ⁣
⁣
We all know the pitfalls - we learn a few basic phrases and then end up reeling them out every time we try to speak the language, never leaving our comfort zone.⁣
⁣
How to solve this problem? Well, you have to get creative. ⁣
⁣
One such way is to prime your practice conversations. This gives you time to think outside the box and nudge yourself towards using an adventurous phrase here and there. ⁣
⁣
In our Ihsan Arabic lessons, we often encourage students to pair up and use this approach:⁣
⁣
First work separately. Both write your own short list of questions you’d like to ask your partner in a bubble in the centre of the page. ⁣
⁣
Write a range of possible answers in little bubbles around this list. Sift through your notes and try writing down some interesting phrases that you haven't mastered yet. ⁣
⁣
Start the speaking exercise with your partner. Its fine to glance down at your word bubbles every now and then. ⁣
⁣
This should enrich the conversation, prompting you and your partner to leave your comfort zones and explore new vocabulary.
