  • We get really proud when we see our @buabroad alumni out in the world doing big things! One of those alumni is @repandyvargas (CAS ‘15) who completed the Madrid Internship Program and Washington, DC Internship Program while he was a #buterrier ✈️ He’s generously offered to speak at an event to discuss how you can tackle the political and social issues of today while interning at @buwashingtondc this summer or fall.

  • While we didn't have a professional photographer on staff to catch all of our races, BRTC saw some great performances around the oval this weekend. Hayley, Louise, Janelle, and @apettinella got us started in the mile, and @hayleycamilla, Jaimie, Meghan, and Diana used that mile momentum to bust some rust in the 3k! On Saturday, Sean, Norm, Tim, Connor, Prizzi, Kevin, Keith, Drago, Aaron, and Brian used the inspiration from their fierce female teammates to run strong races ranging from the 800 to the 5k! ⚡🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏽‍♂️⚡ #battleroadtc #battleroadfanclub #buterrier #indoortrack #4monthstotwilight #coldoutsidehotinside❄️🔥 #weneedaphotographer

  • Today’s Alumna Spotlight features Dr. Lori Beason-Held, who graduated from the Department in 1994. Dr. Beason-Held is a senior staff scientist in the Laboratory of Behavioral Neuroscience at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of NIH. Her work involves functional neuroimaging of the aging human brain. She focuses on defining modifiers of brain function that may contribute to cognitive decline and dementia as we age. She is also a Women Scientists Advisor for NIA and spends a lot of time mentoring the next generation of scientists who come through her lab. When she was a student in the Department, she worked in the Moss/Rosene lab on the contributions of temporal lobe brain regions to memory function in the non-human primate.

Words of wisdom?: “There are several keys to having a successful career in science. 1) Plan ahead. Have a plan for the next step in your career and work toward reaching your goals in a organized fashion. Think about what you need to accomplish each year to reach your goals, and make it happen. 2) Seek words of wisdom. Find people you respect who have already accomplished what you are setting out to do and talk to them. Ask them how they got to where they are, strategies that worked and didn’t work for them, things they would do differently if they had to do it again. 3) Make yourself an invaluable member of your group at all stages of your career. Be an active, productive, friendly, and helpful member of your group, not an isolated worker bee. Volunteer, then do a good job. Not only does this bolster your CV, but it can set you ahead of other candidates when you’re moving up the career ladder.”

.
Hobbies?: “I recently did a series of histology paintings using my old textbooks from BUSM!”
