During Durga Puja we not only invoke the blessings of the deity but also celebrate women power. The Goddess personifies Shakti, power & just like she destroyed the evil demon Mahishasura who was tormenting & traumatizing good people, similarly we women should never silently suffer at the hands of torturous people. We too should gather our strength, fight, defeat & set ourselves free from all evil around us.
🌿
I am blessed to be part of a family, where women have lived their life with respect, dignity & pride
🌿
My maternal great grandmother Dr. Noni Bala Devi was a beauty to reckon with. At a height of 5 ft 10 inch she was a towering Diva. However as was the norms of the time just as she completed her 10th standard at the tender age of 16 she was married off to the Zamindar(a landowner with a land bank)of Mymensingh,a city in the present day Bangladesh but then a part of undivided India.
🌿
By the age of 17 she had mothered my maternal grandmother. Though her marriage was plagued with physical abuse,an infidel husband, yet she managed to stay in that marriage for two years because of a loving mother~in~law
🌿
However with each passing day the abuses increased & finally one day her mother~in~law urged her to go back to Calcutta & start her life afresh.
🌿
This was the era when India was ruled by the British. In this time she had the guts to walk out of her marriage with a one year old daughter. She returned to her parents home, studied & became a gynecologist.Such was her name & fame as a prominent gynecologist that a wing of the Calcutta Medical College is named after her.Not only that she delivered the famous Indian actor Shashi Kapoor, those who follow Indian cinema will know that Prithviraj Kapoor,Shashi Kapoor’s father lived in Calcutta those days
🌿
Though she never married again, she ensured that she lived a life of dignity, respect, loved by all her patients
🌿
She also made sure that my grandmother was educated.
🌿
Today I celebrate & remember her
