  • Giant Plate of Pork & Chive Dumplings! I’ve been craving Chinese food 24/7 since I got back from Puerto Rico 😅 From Bo Hai Dumpling Town, a little dumpling factory in Manhattan Chinatown! You walk in to find Chinese women at different stations, rolling out dough for wrappers and making hundreds of dumplings at a time! It’s impressive & mesmerizing 🤯 That said, the dumps from Shu Jiao Fuzhou are still my favorite!

If there's one thing we love more than carbs, it's hating carbs. It feels like I can't go online without seeing some new hot take on the carbs make you fat debate.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Debate is being kind, because the reality is that there is no debate. The studies have been done. Carbs don't make you fat. You can even eat them and lose weight. Imagine that.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
But why do people lose weight when they stop eating carbs? Because they are removing a food group that previously made up a portion of their daily calorie intake - therefore they have created a calorie deficit - which led to weight loss.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The point is - if you remove any type of food from your diet that you eat and don't replace it (or replace it with lower calorie options) then you'll lose weight. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
It comes down to your calories. If you're in a surplus you will gain weight (regardless of how your macros are divided). You can gain weight (very easily) eating a low carb diet. There is no difference between low carb and low fat diets when it comes to weight loss.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Enjoy your bread.⠀⠀

There is an old saying. "Prior proper planning prevents piss poor performance." In the past 2.5 months my diet has slipped hard. I get too caught up in work that before I know it 8 hours pass since my last meal. I know that's an excuse and I'm not one for excuses. I know I can set an alarm on my phone to ring every two hours, or take a break, but I seem to attack my workload too aggressively. That being said when I noticed my body weight dropping too fast and metabolizing muscle I was not happy. I ventured to Wendy's for three beaconator combos to tie me over on a day when I simply didn't have enough food for the day. Each baconator burger contains approximately 60 grams of protein per burger, I figured that should at least protect my muscles for the day. That being said I can honestly say that halfway through the second meal combo I was craving chicken and rice. Dieting down for both my shows I opted for potatoes and pierogies as a carb source but now I'm reluctant to cook anything more them rice. Now to get BACK TO THE GRIND, I'm planning on a two week hardcore diet reset. Aiming to eat 8 servings of rice a day and around a kilo of chicken breast every day should supply me with over 300 grams of protein in chicken and over 250 grams of carbs in rice a day for 2 weeks. Combining that with a over 2 hour long workout plan should get me tuned back up.

  • This afternoon was back to an old familiar favorite - yucca fries!! I haven't prepared these in almost a year, mostly because they are very low in protein, and the protein struggle is real. I almost forgot how to prepare them - of course, once I started I remembered and they are still delicious. (For those who haven't tried them, raw yucca can be boiled then roasted - it is comparable to a French fry but much lower in protein). I'm still adjusting my Palynziq dose a bit - I got a recent level that came back at 0.3 - I may be down to 4 shots a week soon. It's weird; life has been a big adjustment when I started a new job in August. The job also includes a 90 minute commute, and I can't always tell if my low levels or my life circumstances are contributing to how I have been feeling lately; which is often fatigued and a bit disengaged (still have good mental clarity). When my levels have been between 2 and 3, I always appreciated how energetic and engaged with everything I felt. My highest level in the past 4 months has been a 1.3. It's a challenge for everyone with PKU - knowing the difference between levels and normal life challenges.
What do you all think about the low levels contributing to being extra tired?

  • 🍞 In recent years, the popularity of low-carb diets has exploded. At the same time, the humble carbohydrate has been demonised as the macronutrient to blame for most of our health problems 🤔
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍭 To start with, there’s a difference between carb sources like candy and heavily refined flours, and sources like whole grains, starchy vegetables and fruit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍝 The problem that one may face with highly refined carbohydrate sources is that they are often less nutrient-dense, less satisfying, more calorie-dense and easy to overeat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥖 However, there are plenty of highly nutritious carbohydrate-based foods, including fruit and veggies! Even wholegrain pasta and bread contain nutrients like B vitamins and iron.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🧠 Carbohydrates (or sugars) are the preferred fuel source for our brains and muscles. This is why those on low carb diets can struggle to match the athletic performance of those with a higher carb intake.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙋‍♀️ We do know that eating a large variety of fibre-rich carbohydrate sources is essential for our gut health (and to keep things running smoothly 💩)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐛 Aim for >30 different plant foods each week to nourish those gut bugs. These plant foods include all of the options listed above!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✨ The Bottom Line Some people run better on a lower carb diet vs. a higher carb diet. Regardless, the quality of carbohydrates we eat is more important than the quantity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🙅‍♀️ You don’t need to fear carbs — all the options listed above can be healthy as part of a balanced diet.

  • A 2001 study found that adding protein without the presence of carbohydrates is pointless (Tipton and Wolfe 2001).⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a 2011 study, scientists fed drinks with varying combinations of carbs and protein to 8 healthy men, both during 3 hours of cycling and 3 hours of recovery. Results found that the carb/protein combination led to the greatest utilization and recovery (Hulston, Wolsk, et al. 2011).⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yet daily in every gym around this protein obsessed planet we see men and women hammering down straight protein powders minus any carbs. By the truck load. ⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What a waste of time and $$$$$$$$$$$$💰💰💰⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Protein intake does not increase protein synthesis unless you include carbs. ⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Muscles fed protein in the absence of carbs is like an engine full of gas that can't run because there's no oxygen. ⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is exactly why I tell all my clients not to bother with pre mixed protein powders, but instead add a protein additive (like pure hemp or pea) to your carb loaded fruit smoothies.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Again my message is clear.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Have you heard of food combining? It's a trendy eating pattern that claims the 3 macronutrients in our diets—carbs, fat and protein—need to be eaten separately for optimal #digestion. When digestive health and the microbiome are top-of-mind for so many folks, it’s easy to get pulled into a regimen promising a healthy, happy gut...but does it really work?

Spoiler: we've looked into it, and most of the key components of food combining are not backed up by science.

Despite what food combining advocates think (aka separating food), there is research that encourages the consumption of #nutrients and #foods in *combination* with each other.
For example, eating a high-carb food, like fruit, with a high-protein food, like Greek yogurt, could slow the absorption of #glucose into the blood. For individuals with diabetes, this is especially important, as it reduces the risk of an immediate blood sugar spike and subsequent drop right after a meal.

Our verdict? Food combining is a fad diet. Its strict rules are not sustainable for most lifestyles and the research supporting its health benefits are limited at best. Instead, it’s best to eat a balanced combination of nutrient-rich foods at every meal. As long as you keep a healthful plate overall, your #gut will be 😊

  • BEST. FEELING. EVER. 💜
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Waking up, stepping on the scale, seeing the same number as last week... and being HAPPY 😊
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That 3 digit number on the scale used to determine my happiness. It used to determine how hard I worked out or if I ate carbs that day 😳🍞
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over the last 5 weeks I've learned that my body can change, I can become stronger and healthier, and yet that 3 digit number might stay the same. And that's A-ok with me 👌
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you're struggling to lose weight but you're putting in all the hard work (working out, eating well, etc.) you might wanna look past the scale 💁‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do you FEEL? How's your ENERGY? Are you SLEEPING better? Do your clothes FIT better?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That number is only one part of the journey. Please don't let it define your success 😘

  • Sushi Time 🍣
by @change_begins_with_you
What is sushi 🍣?
.

Sushi is a traditional Japanese dish that's based around a particular variety of short-grain rice that's lightly vinegared and served with a selection of raw or cooked fish and vegetables. Toppings and fillings can include sushi-grade raw fish, such as salmon or tuna, cooked fish or shellfish, tofu, avocado, chicken, vegetables and wasabi.
.

There are many varieties of sushi including:
.
Nigri - consists of thinly sliced, raw fish pressed on top of sushi rice. .

Sashimi - consists of thin slices of raw fish. .

Sushi Roll - nori seaweed wrap layered with rice with either raw fish or other cooked ingredients. .

Paper Roll - consists of raw fish and other ingredients wrapped in either soy or rice paper.
Sushi 🍣can be a healthy ✅ choice, but it depends on the variety you order.
Oily fish such as salmon 🍣 and tuna 🐟 contain omega-3, which is an essential fatty acid, good source of protein also ✔️. Seaweed is also used in sushi - Seaweed is high in fibre and protein as well as being a good source of minerals including iodine, iron, zinc and vitamin B12.
When choosing sushi try to look for fresh ingredients for more health benefits and keep the deep fried to a minimum.

Sushi can definitely be enjoyed no matter what your goals are.
It’s the perfect go-to snack or grab-and-go meal.
Remember anything in moderation is okay…
