  • Have you heard this before? "YOU GOTTA PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE!!" I used to hear it all the time too, and I found it a bit annoying. I don't wanna be out THERE! I'm safe and warm in HERE!
Now I'm starting to understand why it's such great advice.
🌟
One of the best things I ever did for my career was putting myself in a position to represent the company I worked at. At @ajsmartdesign, I understood what we did, why it was so important and was eager to share it with my network. It became obvious that I enjoyed giving talks, workshops and being on camera. So much so, that it became a big part of my role. I know that not everyone wants to speak at events, be on camera or have their face plastered on instagram stories, but there are other ways you can get similar results.
💫
You could offer to organize events, write on the company blog (maybe START your company's blog!) or host educational sessions. Ideally, it should be something that you enjoy and that will separate you from the pack. Doing something where you're articulating your expertise will help you grow your network. And if people know who you are and what you're good at, you'll have many more opportunities thrown your way. I promise. 🎈

  • Create the type of schedule and practice you want for your career because it's possible (#whymypractice). There was a time when I thought seeing patients part-time would be a waste especially since I dedicated my entire life to become a physician. That is, until I graduated and realized the healthcare system as a whole is more focused on squeezing every bit of energy and integrity out of its workers and ultimately prioritizes profit over the wellbeing of patients and the healthcare professionals they employ.
I may sound pessimistic, but not really. This perspective is what motivated me to recognize that in order to fight and survive this system, we can't sit back and be passive. We must be proactive and know our value/worth. I love my career and believe that providing the best care possible for my patients is worth fighting for.
I quit working full-time for a large employer after I burned out. Some of my friends still work there and are content, but it wasn't a good fit for me. I have to be in control of my schedule, so I started working per diem 3-4 days/week at a practice that provides autonomy & flexibility. I'm not interested in dealing with the business side of running a practice yet, but at some point in the future I'd love to have my own where I see patients for psychotherapy & meds in 45min visits (yes, this is possible in some practice settings, though not feasible in many). A lot of people ask if I also work on inpatient units and the answer is 'no.' I prefer to work outpatient because my goal is to help patients avoid the inpatient unit as much as possible.

I spend about 15% of the rest of my time on other interests such as writing, speaking, social media and media collaborations; then the rest I spend on quality time with family, friends, loved ones, travelling and doing things I enjoy. In the past, participating in these events were an afterthought, but since taking control of my schedule, they have instead been my priority and that's exactly how I want it to be.

Thanks to @amitakundramd for starting this campaign -- it's important that students see there's various ways to structure our careers!

  • I created Katherine Gansallo Consulting because I now know how powerful it is to ⁣
⁣
1. Have someone to build your confidence and let you know you are capable of all your dreams and so much more. ⁣
⁣
2.Have someone to stratergise with about your next career move.
⁣
3.Create an outstanding LinkedIn/ CV that gets your foot in the door ⁣
⁣
4.Have help to ace the interview ⁣
⁣
5.Devise a strategic promotion plan that focuses not just on the conversation but all that goes into it.⁣
⁣
6.Help you get that more senior role or change industries or careers all together.⁣
⁣
7.Get the tools and techniques to negotiate a better salary, sign on or overall package. ⁣
⁣
8.Have an accountability partner to keep you on track and make sure you get to where you want to quickly. ⁣
⁣
As I struggled through my first few years of working life not knowing whether what I was experiencing was the norm( 3 different jobs in my first year 😱)or if I just couldn’t hack it in the “working world” I felt ashamed and lonely. How come my life didn’t match the vision and how come everyone else was doing so well. I honestly thought I would never make it to where I am now and that my dreams were simply that dreams. ⁣
⁣
Now who else had parents that made it seem like a simple mathematical formula. Go to school, get good grades and then you’ll do well and have a good paying job and they all lived happily ever after. That’s what it seems like to me now, some kind of fairytale. After only 8 years of working I know there’s no “simple” formula. ⁣
⁣
Like everything in life, things at work very rarely follow our plans and happen exactly how / when we want them to. I now know I wasn’t alone but at the time that sure wasn’t how I felt. ⁣
⁣
You see I know what it’s like not to get the graduate job. I know what it’s like to not live at home and have to work to pay bills. I know what it’s like to not have a great and supportive manager or colleagues. I know what it’s like to go on countless interviews and not get the job or work for a company with the “wrong” culture for me and I also know what it’s like to want a promotion .......continued in comments

  • I talked to 3 clients last week who shared this worry with me. You spend so much time at work-it’s not being whiny to want to enjoy it. I work with ambitious young professionals 2-12 years out of college who are feeling stuck. They see a world of possible next steps, but aren’t sure how to move forward. They’re worried they are just drifting along or are just going through the motions. They feel guilty about feeling unfulfilled when on paper they have a “good” job. They have a kernel of an idea that there’s a better way, but the methods that put them at the top in college (researching endlessly, following the syllabus, picking the right answer) don’t work in the real world. When there is no right answer, how do you ever get confident you’re on the right track?
I can help you through a step-by-step process to get clarity, explore options, and pursue the right next step for you. The first session is free so you can see the impact coaching can make. Hit the link in the bio to schedule today.

  • A client said: “I hated interviewing. It felt like self promotion...like tooting my own horn.” If you feel this way, read on. You will benefit from this shift in perspective to nail your next interview.
Most of our clients are in the habit of viewing their success as a list of job responsibilities they’ve held. Their titles, their daily tasks, the length of time between promotions, etc.

Inevitably, this perspective leads them to try to prove WHY they were trusted with these responsibilities. And absolutely, that’s awkward!

Here’s the shift.

Show the RESULTS of your participation in those tasks. The outcomes that happened BECAUSE of your involvement. And QUANTIFY those results whenever possible.

An example: -I was promoted to Marketing Communications Manager because I (Insert responsibilities). VS. -In the first 4 months as Marketing Manager, my team saw a 15% increase in sales. Here’s how we did it! (Insert story: collaboration, creativity, strategy)

A focus on your responsibilities and titles leads you to defend your value.

A focus on quantified results leads you to tell stories that prove your value.

People love stories and results speak for themselves. “I stopped trying to prove I was worth the job. What a difference!” #jobsearch #future #careers #careergoals #careersuccess

Individuals in my coaching programs are often motivated and experience a change in mindset by things like words of affirmation. -
-
According to the book, The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, if you value words of affirmation, you tend to express and like to receive affection through spoken affection or appreciation. -
-
Tia Walker, in the book The Inspired Caregiver, says, “Affirmations are our mental vitamins, providing the supplementary positive thoughts we need to balance the barrage of negative events and thoughts we experience daily.”

This is my vitamin for you today! The words come from Nelson Mandela. 💛🙏🏾

*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You’ve heard me say before that the average job opening attracts ~250 resumes, and only 4-6 people actually get interviewed. ONE gets the job. How do you ensure you stand out in the interview?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When employers say “tell me about yourself”, they want to hear more than your job history. They want to understand what makes you unique and separates you from every other applicant, how your experiences have prepared you for this new role.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When they ask “why should we hire you?” they want to hear YOUR value proposition. What do YOU bring to the table? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Use that interview time to demonstrate why you are one of a kind!

  • She said, “I love that you’re not all about faking it til you make it!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I squealed, “YESS! So happy you realize that!”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Because you don’t have to fake it ‘til you make it to make it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You shouldn’t have to...
Lie on your resume
Make yourself into someone you’re not
Downplay your personality
Operate outside of integrity
Convince yourself to go after a role,
that doesn’t feel right
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Or, any of those things to get another job.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ll even add that IF you have to do those things, you WON’T love the job you’ll get.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ AND, they probably won’t love you. 🤷🏾‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Argue with your dog not me because those are FAX! 😂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The secret to getting a better, more fulfilling and satisfying role at a company you’ll love...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ is getting clear on EXACTLY what you DO bring to the table and finding roles that are looking for that, at places where you WANT to be.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s really that simple.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you get clear on what’s a HELL YES for you and why you’re exactly who they need with the awesome skills you already have,
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Getting a job you’ll love becomes that much easier.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you want to know how to do that while being confidently you, WITHOUT being someone you’re not...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then grab my free guide: How to go from Zero Interviews to Dream Job Offers
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And, I’ll show you how. Link in da bio, of course! 🔥

  • Sitting on the floor.
What comes to mind?
I think of playing cards and board games with my kids. Playing with my dogs. Carpet picnics.
It reminds me that it implies:
Approachability.
Vulnerability.
Playfulness.
An invitation.
How do you invite others into your world? How approachable are you? How can you let down any protective guard to invite another in?

  • This little suite is my home away from home. It’s where I have the privilege to make other women (& men) feel beautiful, confident and worthy day in and day out. Being a hairstylist is SO MUCH more than just coloring & cutting hair to me. I’ve built the BEST relationships with my clients & most are just like family to me. I’ve laughed, cried, listened, worried & guided my clients in this suite. I’ve seen an abundance of joy, marriage, pregnancy, love, success, strength and I’ve also seen depression, divorce, failure, heartache and loss. This little suite has heard more secrets than you can imagine. I’ve had many, many “therapy” sessions. But you know what? This is what God made me to do. This career is my passion. I am forever grateful for every single client who has sat in my chair throughout the years. I’ve grown more than I ever thought possible. I’m continually blessed by this little suite and the clients who come through my doors.
Find something that sparks a fire in you and go after it. Stop making excuses. Believe in yourself. Make it happen and live your dream.

  • Dear WiiNr, never go into a pay raise negotiation with your emotions. Deal with the facts, articulate your value confidently.

  • For many of us our salary reflects our perceived worth at work, our value in the office and out of it - it's part of who we are, sometimes what we worry about, sometimes what we celebrate. It's emotionally charged talking about it (so often we don't). It can be off the dial emotionally to contemplate asking for more... How can we make pay rise conversations less personal? One way is to make this more about your organisation and less about yourself.

1. Ask yourself what's happening in your organisation today - is it doing well financially? What about your team - under budget as we approach the year end? If yes and yes, it's a good time to ask for a £5-15k increase.

2. What is the data on the market rate for the role you are doing? Do your research - get the numbers, look for a range. Look online, ask around, ask recruiters. Is it more than you are on today? If yes, that can be the rationale for your ask.

3. Is there an opportunity to discuss your salary? Often at this time of year, there are annual performance reviews, pay reviews, bonus conversations. These are great organisational opportunities to ask for a salary re-think, or a bonus that reflects your contribution. Dare you? I dare you.

Want to explore this further? Join us on 2 November in North London. Link in bio 🙂

  • “To me, it is more than individual recognition. This is a recognition of the many people who made me, those I represent, the many young boys and girls all over the world, especially in my home continent of Africa, living under poverty and wondering if things will ever get better.”
________
Today we celebrate a phenomenal queen, who reminds us on a daily that education truly is the key to a better life.
