  • "Another image of the wonderful Abusha. Two years ago whilst driving through Jinka in the Omo Valley I spotted a street kid who was ‘different’. He had blue eyes. He is probably of the Ari tribe and his eyes are probably a genetic mutation. Whilst back in the Omo last week on an Alternative Visions Photo Tour, I asked my guide if she could try to find him. She succeeded, hence we were able to photograph him two years later. He is such a nice kid and is now in an orphanage and is going to be adopted and get a chance to have a new life. His eyes, cerulean blue, are incredible and it is perhaps this which has created an opportunity to start afresh."

  • Happy International Women’s Day, Everyone. Today is a day we celebrate women for their achievements across the usual divides formed by ethnicity, nationality, culture, and race. I was hoping to make my post count for something beyond the sort of “yay women” celebratory call that happens for one day and then is completely forgotten. So I’ll put a challenge in its place. In the macrame community, I’m seeing a lot of folks selling and creating with a cord/string colour they’re calling “nude.” But it’s a white nude only. When creating a line of macrame breasts, it’s been important to me to dye my own materials so that I can achieve a diversity of “nudes.” It’s true that only the light and white ones sell—and that ought to tell us something important about the lack of inclusion in maker/buyer, crafter, and fiber arts circles—but one of the ways to create more inclusive spaces is by crafting more diverse representations of colour, and in this case race. My challenge to you fiber artists is twofold: 1) if you’re selling supplies and have named a white nude rope colour “nude,” change the name to something that doesn’t centralize whiteness; 2) if you’re buying rope that’s been called “nude” but centralizes whiteness, contact your seller and suggest other possible names that perform more inclusive work. It’s a baby step. But it is a step we should take.

  • "Every child is an artist" – Picasso. Our mission is to empower cultural expression for now and generations to come. We want for children to see the beauty and colors our world has! 1/9

The story behind the photo: "In June 2015 I was working in the remote Machiguenga community of Yomibato in Manu National Park, Peru. Every afternoon a girl would skip through our camp on the way to the river to take her pet saddle-back tamarin for a swim; so I decided to shoot a portrait of her. Yoina was not impressed with having her photograph taken and the tamarin hated water. To be honest I'm not sure why she took it for a swim, it spent its whole time screaming and trying to clamber onto her head to escape the water. I photographed Yoina on two consecutive afternoons and she only broke a smile for a split second in one of the many shots I took of her."

  • Enjoyed a wonderful sermon at Friday prayer today. Imam talked about the importance the Quran places on protecting, helping and respecting ALL people, regardless of what faith they follow. To all of my Christian and Jewish family and friends, have a wonderful Passover and Easter with your loved ones!

  • Thank you to Communication Specialist Janitza Brack for launching our inaugural session for our EMS as a Second Language Program this morning. Janitza, also a certified interpreter, taught the language and culture basics, as well as commonly used terms and questions to assess our patients better. Please join us for our Spanish program or one of our many other language tutorials. Help us give back to our patients and communities by learning something a bit different.

  • Brandon’s colleagues say I post a lot of him and us so this one’s for you boos.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Brandon (my husband, for those of you who have recently found me) has spent his time in Denver leading product at Pairin, a very-many-award-winning tech startup and social enterprise here in Denver that is on a mission to make education relevant and hiring equitable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
PAIRIN Hiring was just released, and it allows companies to quickly and easily identify the applicants that are most like current top performers. I see you Kellogg and other boss pals on here, and I raise you this: what would a tool that makes hiring MORE EQUITABLE and LESS OF A HEADACHE be worth to you?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Head to Pairin.com then to products to learn more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Also if you see this study cowboy this weekend buy him a drink. He and his team have earned it with this release. #notanad #justaveryobsessedwife

  • We continue our celebration of #womeningeothermal with the US WING Ambassador and Senior Geologist with the US Navy Geothermal Program Office, Kelly Blake. •
Kelly shared her thoughts on the role WING has played in creating gender equality awareness and the importance of keeping young people, specifically girls interested in STEM.
•
“My name is Kelly Blake and I've been working in the geothermal industry for almost 8 years as a geologist for the Navy Geothermal Program Office. The geothermal industry, as a whole, has been evolving in a really important, and from my perspective, useful, diverse way and I do believe that the Women in Geothermal (WING) group has helped open up conversations specifically about gender diversity in the industry globally. Keeping young people interested in STEM is vastly important for this planet's future. Being an advocate for women within the geothermal industry is hopefully a small role we are playing to push the importance of girls to refuse to drop off in STEM fields as they grow up.
•
We appreciate Kelly’s contributions to our industry and how she leads by example! •

  • Most of this paragraph didn't make the cut when HuffPost made the final edits, but it applies to more than a few of you, and I was sad that they cut it from my essay. Much love to my amazing chosen family. 💗
.
"As for my family, I cut ties with my mother seven years ago because she was so toxic. For a while, it was hard to know whether I’d done the right thing because the world tells you that blood family is so important. But the people who raised me treated me so badly that all it took was finding chosen family. There are people who have been in my life for more than a decade now, and a few folks I’m related to by blood who have still stuck around. Their love and support for me don’t waver based on how much or how little facial or body hair I have. They don’t criticize me for my weight or for chasing my dreams that don’t fit society’s narrow definitions of normal or acceptable. I have multiple people I call Mom who are in my life because we genuinely love each other – and unlike my birth mother, they celebrate my successes with me, regardless of how they would have chosen to handle a given situation. I now know what unconditional love is, thanks to my spouse and our chosen family."
