  • With fashion revolution week winding up my feed is filled with people asking the ever important question - ‘who made my clothes?’ and question the cost of production and fast fashion on human lives. along with it is also the idea of the longevity of one’s clothes.
.
I have always loved textiles and clothes and had a nice wardrobe but the truth is, the idea that you can just wear and throw your clothes away when the season is done is still rather new (and strange) to me. I don’t know about you but I certainly did not grow up in a home where clothes were just thrown away. You wore them and if you didn’t want them you gave them away to a cousin / friend who likes it.
.
when appropriate, to somebody from less privileged circumstances who may have more use for those clothes than you. For instance, I am pretty sure our home help’s 24 year old daughter who has just started her first job in a bank and is working to help her family meet their basic needs has no use for a strappy party dress that I don’t want. Salwars and sarees she can use so those will go to her. .
.
Worn and soft cotton sarees end up as wipe / towel / nappies / blankets for babies in the house and silk sarees become costumes or if they are too old to be made into costumes then quilts.
.
Clothes that can’t be given away or swapped (read threadbare t shirts and tattered dance sarees) become cleaning. Garage sales (physical or online) and swap parties are also becoming increasingly popular.
.
Celebrating slow fashion in a gorgeous buttery and light handwoven cotton dress with Chikankari threadwork accents from @sufiadesignstudio . This brand, started by two fashion school graduates, works with handwoven and natural fabrics. They also work closely with a craft cluster in Lucknow to re-interpret the traditional chikankari hand embroidery on clothes. Form the little stitch details on the bodice of this dress to more elaborate versions on kurtas and dresses, this is as summer friendly as clothes get.
.
Handmade with love and I am going to love wearing it for years to come.
