I recently went to a Lucy Rose concert at the union chapel in Islington and was reminded about why I love to go and see music live. It’s an experience in real time and as such its unpredictable and subject to chance. It can go wrong or it can go perfectly.
After one of her songs Lucy admitted that something had gone wrong with her guitar and asked if we noticed? Ofcourse we didn’t, or at least I didn’t, but it made me think that perhaps things going slightly wrong, bring the experience more into the conscious present as it reminds us that there is only one chance to hear that song being played right then, right there. There was enough craft and perfection in general, so a few things not going to plan made it seem more wild and special.
I think the same can be said of ceramics. The pots I fall in love with are the ones where there is a high level of craft in evidence but some things have been left to chance, or chance has been encouraged to happen (the reactions of the clay and glaze for example). In my work this can often mean that if there is too much imperfection, it goes in the bin, but if it’s just right those pots are the ones I love the most. I suppose I’m looking for the right tension between freedom and control, or elements that are well crafted and other aspects that are more organic. #effiegibson#craft#makersmovement#handmade#craftsmanship#interiordesign#interiors#pottery#contemporaryceramics#ceramics#stoneware#clay#stilllife#moonjar#whiteceramics#contemporarydesign#mountain#cremerging#designermaker#pottersofinstagram#contemporarycraft#ceramicsofinstagram #designlife#craft#artisan#artist#wabisabi#lucyrose
Happy Easter! Happy Spring!
A spring road-trip inspired design in the mold. I hope I’ve done the Palouse justice; as no matter the time of year I always find this area quite beautiful.
Moroccan Red Clay for the base topped with swirls of green and yellow (French Green Clay & Spirulina, and Annatto Seed powder).
Freshly scented with Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage, and Eucalyptus essential oils. Mmmmm 😊
