“Kilimanjaro is a snow-covered mountain 19,341 feet high, and is said to be the highest mountain in Africa. Its western summit is called the Masai 'Ngaje Ngai', the House of God. Close to the western summit there is a dried and frozen carcas of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude.” ― Ernest Hemingway, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories
“MANIFESTO OF THE BRAVE AND BROKENHEARTED There is no greater threat to the critics and cynics and fearmongers Than those of us who are willing to fall Because we have learned how to rise With skinned knees and bruised hearts; We choose owning our stories of struggle, Over hiding, over hustling, over pretending. When we deny our stories, they define us. When we run from struggle, we are never free. So we turn toward truth and look it in the eye. We will not be characters in our stories. Not villains, not victims, not even heroes. We are the authors of our lives. We write our own daring endings. We craft love from heartbreak, Compassion from shame, Grace from disappointment, Courage from failure. Showing up is our power. Story is our way home. Truth is our song. We are the brave and brokenhearted. We are rising strong.” ― Brené Brown, Rising Strong
Learning to breathe above the clouds…. Mt Kilimanjaro, 7 days, 54 miles from desert to 19,341’ artic and back allows one lots of time to process and think…. The Climb of My Life
Sometimes 1/30th of a second is all that a photographer needs to capture the moment of a lifetime .
"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
– Steve Jobs
“People who dream when they sleep at night know of a special kind of happiness which the world of the day holds not, a placid ecstasy, and ease of heart, that are like honey on the tongue. They also know that the real glory of dreams lies in their atmosphere of unlimited freedom. It is not the freedom of the dictator, who enforces his own will on the world, but the freedom of the artist, who has no will, who is free of will. The pleasure of the true dreamer does not lie in the substance of the dream, but in this: that there are things that happen without any interference from his side, and altogether outside his control. Great landscapes create themselves, long splendid views, rich and delicate colours, roads, houses, which he has never seen or heard of...” ― Karen Blixen, Out of Africa
#rdmtakeoffsandlandings Tanzania to Doha #
In both my arrival and departure from Tanzania, I tried desperately to sit on the side of the plane that gave the best access to a photograph of Kili from the air, I bombed out both times.
My third oppurtunity came after my flight was rerouted from Zanzibar back through Tanzania and on to Doha instead of straight to Doha.
A special thanks to Lacey at Red Dog for helping create a very special shirt for the climb of my life.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and those who have reached its summit say that their mental preparation was even more important than the physical.
Transitioning from Uganda to Tanzania, I had to pack for tempuratures ranging from African desert heat to temperatures down to 10 below zero at the summit of Kilimanjaro. So much for traveling lite on this trip🙄
