  • I'm beginning to understand colour. It's so damn hard to get right 😅😂. Practice with one of my favourite things: portraits. Took a long time with this one trying to get the face structure right, as well as having the colours look natural. Overall I learned a lot from this piece, and I'm excited to use what I've learned in future projects :)

  • Day 18 - Mistake or Lesson

Its definitely been a learning curve with enamel. I find it can be the most frustrating but rewarding thing to work with but I’ve definitely learnt over the past three years to have patience! I’ve found that taking time while enamelling makes the whole difference. There have been so many times that I’ve had to scrap something because I wasn’t patient enough and sadly a lot of them have been silver pieces!! I don’t think I realised the cost when I first started out and how expensive it can be and looking back now, I am so annoyed that I was so careless! So the key to enamelling I’ve found is definitely patience!

  • Day 18 of #marchmeetthemaker is Mistakes/Lessons and ceramics is choc full of both - but every mistake is a valuable lesson and keeps our work improving.
Porcelain in particular is a tough mistress and you can be sure that any small error will find you out, if not immediately, definitely by the final firing! Like this lovely big bowl which had the tiniest hairline crack in the centre - too small for the naked eye almost, but it was there all the same.
But the upside of this mistake is that each November I sell all such seconds at the studio half price and that really makes people happy.
