  • Cougars, a.k.a mountain lions or pumas, live throughout the park, but few people ever see them. The northern range of Yellowstone is prime habitat for cougars because snowfall is light and prey always available. Cougars follow their prey as they move to higher elevations in summer and lower elevations in the winter.

Give wildlife room, use a zoom. The safest way to view wildlife is through a telephoto lens, a spotting scope, or a pair of binoculars. Park animals are wild and dangerous. Bison, bears, and elk have injured and killed people. Do not approach, encircle, follow, or feed any animal. Stay 100 yards (91 m) from bears and wolves. Stay 25 yards (23 m) from all other animals.

PUMA: A NATURAL ARCHITECT OF PATAGONIA

When the first nomads arrived at Patagonia, they met with pumas, the second largest felid of America, that were already living in this territory. Humans and cougars —another term for this large cat— have learned to adapt to diverse conditions and habitats throughout the continent, gaining valuable plasticity to colonize lands from Alaska down to Patagonia.
The “American lion” is a vital piece of the ecosystem since it regulates populations of large herbivores, and for some time now our team of “nature restorers” have been working on learning more about the “master of stealth”. They gathered valuable information from the video recordings of the camera traps they set inside the canyons.
Now they are ready to move forward on this project, so stay tuned for more updates!
