  • Ahh Québec, La Belle Province, the land where you can walk into any random depanneur and find delicious local craft beer. I wish we could get your beer in Ontario!

  • A lifeline, etched into the surface of a place that does not need us. Within the expanse of this great valley, this thin ribbon of asphalt felt fragile, vulnerable — yet also like a feat, a reflection of man’s curiosity and perseverance.
.
“It was always the same: hunger and thirst and an awful silence,” a pioneer en route to California said in 1849 about their troubled crossing of Death Valley. Oh, what a difference a good road can make. The thick silence that once was so awful now feels downright spiritual, the vast emptiness that once felt insurmountable is now a haven, the desert colors that once drained all hope from hearts now gives them new life.
.
All because of a simple little road.
.
First a group crossed this stretch of land, slow and uncertain. Then another followed. Then another. Then it simply became the way, a path forged by feet, hooves, and wheels. Then engineers, trucks, machines, and tax dollars came, and that informal way became the official way. Then adventurers came. Then tourists. Then official National Park designation came. And then it became a place we visit not because it’s awful, but because it’s magical.
.
This particular road in this particular place — it gave me a good dose of awe for the day as I sailed over it in the morning light. Nature, good job. Mankind, keep it up.
