  • When the word first got out that the expansion of the universe was accelerating, many astronomers questioned the results. They felt that the observations must be wrong, or the interpretation must be flawed. The whole concept was so difficult to believe because it requires significant changes in our understanding of the way the universe works.
Say you step outside and throw a baseball up into the air. The gravity of Earth begins immediately to act on the baseball, slowing it down even as it rises into the air. The upward speed of the baseball slows until it stops at its peak, then gravity's pull causes it to drop down at an ever-increasing speed. What you can't see is that the baseball also has a tiny gravitational pull that acts upon Earth. Gravity always acts to pull matter together.
Now consider a spaceship. If launched with enough speed, a spaceship will escape Earth's gravity to the extent that it will not fall back to the planet. However, it hasn't escaped the pull of Earth entirely. Though it travels away, the spaceship will be continuously slowed just not to the point where it stops. These same concepts apply to the expansion of space. That expansion was launched in the Big Bang, and ever since then, each bit of matter in the universe has been attracted to every other bit by the force of gravity. This should have been slowing down the expansion.
Before the discovery of dark energy, scientists had two models of how the universe's expansion would work. Whether or not the universe goes all the way to a Big Rip depends on what dark energy really is, and whether it will stay constant forever or fade away as suddenly as it appears to have arisen. And that we do not yet know.
No matter which scenario is right, the universe still has at least a few tens of billions of years left.. nature #science #theorticalphysics #thermodynamics #physics #astronomer #astronomy #nasa🚀 #nebula #galaxy #knowledge #particlephysics #universe #cosmology #cosmologist #astrophysics #scientist #elonmusk #spacex #stellarphysics #interstellar #education #exploration #star #astrophysicist #hubblespacetelescope #hubble #quantumphysics #gravitationalwaves #physicist #realtivity

  • If you believe you have worked hard enough to deserve it, nobody can stop you from achieving it. Big believers of the Law of Attraction will really understand this. Keep reading... 👇
♛
We might not realise just how set in our ways we are, daily habits, how we approach tasks and how we think are all formed and executed in the same or a VERY similar manner each day, week, month and year. We are creatures of habit.
♛
Did you know that 95% of behaviour is habitual - which means that out brain is operating on autopilot for most of the day 🤔
♛
We are in a constant decision paralysis. Procrastination is the name of the game. Will I, should I, won't I? Is this is a good idea? I'll start tomorrow. I must do that. Can't now, I will do that next week. Does that all sound quite familiar?
♛
We are all functioning on autopilot and it's time to disrupt yourself and your thinking. Anticipate and REMOVE distractions 💯 Listen and watch 👀 What do you need and what do people need from you?
♛
If you have a clear strong idea you'll execute in a decisive manner. Clarity AND energy will allow you to be your best and perform at your highest level of productivity. So, what do you want from yourself and in life?
♛
Think about EVERY way you approach situations, walk into a room with a low and negative energy then that’s what you’ll receive. Walk into a room with a high and positive energy then that is what you’ll receive. It’s simple. What you put out to the 🌍 comes right back to you.
♛
Wonder why when you are in a great mood and you approach each person with a positive vibe, the same energy is coming right back at you. You create the type of culture you have in your life, REMEMBER that! "You are the sum of the 5 people you hang around with the most"
♛
Moral of the story? Change your mindset, because it truly will change your LIFE! 🚀 #MotivationalBoss

I had so much fun recently with our 6th grade class as we played @mangahigh to sharpen our estimation skills. Students worked in groups to quickly estimate fraction and decimal problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Let’s talk about compounding. While some will agree and some will disagree on the risk, here’s an example for you. If you start with $1000 on May 1st, take only 2 of your best setups each week, with 4% risk. With a win rate of 75% and 2:1 for your risk reward, by the end of the year your $1,000 is almost $21,000. Sounds easy, but do you have the discipline and do you have the skill? I’m willing to take the $1k challenge, less is more.

  • Had the honor to experience the Carnegie Summit on Improvement in Education with colleagues from HTH. Learned, drank delicious coffee, had some values reinforced, ate delicious food, and then was HUMBLED by the words of Nikole Hannah-Jones! Time to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, but before that... cant wait to hug my babies!

  • My baby will be graduating next month!
Where does the time go?
I remember worrying about my social life; hanging out, partying, doing what 20 somethings do! Now I just look forward to quiet days, alone, so I can refresh and renew for what my youngest ones have in store for me 🤪

  • My lab drawer is a good representation of how organized I like to be in my PhD - everything in order but there’s a little bit of wiggle room here and there! .
.
But seriously. Staying organized is one of the things that really has kept me on track during my PhD! .
.
I use an App called Todoist and make daily to do lists that I can easily tick off during the day. I generally plan my week out on the Friday of the week before so it’s out of my head on the weekend and then revisit it on the Monday of every week. .
.
Another things I like to do is when I make a figure, I write a mini figure legend for it and then discuss what it means and what experiment I should do next to back up that result or if there were any issues with the experiment. This is super handy for when it comes to making talks or writing up. .
.
One of the biggest things I have learned is to be realistic with my goals for the week. It’s not likely I can get 3 different results together in 1 week with all repeats and controls etc. it’s better for me to take three weeks and work on one each week! Or if the experiment takes 2 weeks, do that at a scheduled time each day around other experiments but don’t let it eat into getting the main experiment done. .
.
What are your organization tips?
